I never played these until fairly recently so have no nostalgia for them but I quite liked the first one, even played it through a second time when I got the PS4 collection (first time was on emulator.) It was a great feeling walking through that small coastal town with some fun characters and events along the way.

Second game started out OK but I'm sad to say ended up being a complete and utter slog to get through. Way too big, boring and samey environments, that gameplay just didn't work when scaled up.

Started playing the third one but was so disappointed after the second one I had no desire to continue.

Also with the possible exception of Deadly Premonition it has some of the worst combat I have ever seen, I really don't understand why they spent so much effort on that part of the game with all those special moves and shit.

yeah the combat in shenmue is janky and the training aspect is boring. I never played it either and was expecting something like the tekken 4 forces mode or yakuza, the adventure aspects are really good tho

I recently started building up a bit of a dreamcast collection and Shenmue is the only one that disappointed me. I haven't even touched Shenmue 2. Regretful purchase.

>> No.7112931

Literally the only problem with Shenmue 1 is that you are forced to spend half your day driving a forklift once you get past a certain point in the game.

>> No.7112937

It's the closest to reading a book that I've ever experienced in a purely audio/visual form. RPG/adventure games that use instanced fighting game matches for combat are way too rare a breed.

If you didn't even like the first game there's no way you're getting through the second one, not even worth trying.

Forklift was kind of fun though, especially the morning races.

you have to play it like an adventure game and then its pretty fun seeing where the story goes. Keep in mind there were no games like this one at the time it was released.

As someone from the Millenial/Zoomer era ('94)
I almost put down Shenmue until i got thru the first half of Disc 1 because its incredibly mundane and boring but improved dramatically after that.
Was it AM2's goal to make a 3D point and click game with elements of entire library at that point? I think so.
Shenmue is an incredible only flawed by such a boring introduction.

The first Shenmue is really weird. It feels like that prologue chapter of an RPG where you just go around your hometown running errands to learn the mechanics, except stretched into an entire game, and then Shenmue 2 is the actual game. It's still very good in spite of that, though.

Its more like an adaptation of style and mannerisms and settings. Including gambling themes and other stuff. SEGA of japan hated shenmue, it was basically the CEO who wanted this game to happen and coughed up the dosh for it. Probably wanted to not lose something like i dunno probably 20-30 million bucks.

>> No.7118217

>>7112992

Id say its more like an art piece to get entrenched in the quality of the world, music and mood. A life simulator. So it appeals to autists who thinks its a good game, and people who really appreciate art. So its an extreme polarity if someone likes it. Dunno whether to hit them or want to have a conversation with them.

>Yakuza has very little in common with Shenmue
ofc, the masterpiece of Yakuza have nothing in common with a terrible cum dumpster of a game like Shitmue

If shenmue was yakuza when it came out it probably would have saved the dreamcast. that and making it a karaoke machine not breaking the security.. its still in its own right for the production values a piece of work, but not mainstream at all.

>> No.7118440

and what's more funny is that Shitmue 1 budget was 70 million $ while Yakuza 1 was only 20 million $ and it ended up being faaaaaaar better and more successful
it's really a shame Yakuza didn't came earlier to save the Dreamcast and secures a future of more SEGA consoles
