Well, it's underrated in the sense that it's definitely better than the PS2. The order is:
1. Dreamcast
2. Xbox
3. GameCube
4. PS2.

It doesn't have a mountain of hidden gems like PS2 but it has a few dozen essential, exclusive games and as good as emulation is for it, it's a little laggy and some games need fiddling with. Also Rogue Squadron 3 will fuck your shit up.

Regardless of whether it's overrated or underrated it's an essential system.

1. Xbox. Superior multiplats, good exclusives, amazing graphics and sound
2. PS2. Great games all over the place.
3. Gamecube. Handful of amazing games with the rest being terrible multiplats.
4. Dreamcast. Like the gamecube but for people who still hadn't gotten over arcades.

It depends who you talk to. Some people have mad nostalgia for it and ignore anything wrong with it. Some people didn't even acknowledge it because Nintendo were still targeting kids with it. I owned one and basically never played it until much later to go back and play the essentials.

I think it launched at 150, then it went down to 99 like the other guy said. It was the budget kids system that was cheaper than ps2 and xbox. but parents just bought ps2 for their kids because dvd player, and by the time wii came out gamecube was somewhat regarded as a failed nintendo console
