Why must RPG elements RUIN everything they touch?

FULL STORY:
I'm up to General Kelbesque.
None of my attacks do any damage to him.
My first thought is that I must be missing a crucial item, but searching the entire area reveals nothing.
Then I have an epiphany... IT'S A PUZZLE BOSS!
I can open the gate behind him during the fight - I must be able to lock him behind bars!
What an awesome idea for a boss. And foreshadowed perfectly!
I haven't been able to attack any of the enemies in this area, so the boss fits this theme - And earlier, I had to prove my strength to an elder by pushing him back to the wall using just my sword.
That had to be it!

...Right?

Wrong. This is an RPG, not an action-adventure game.
What I actually need to do is grind for two levels (1900 XP).
Blue slimes are the only enemy nearby I can damage. 6XP a pop.
So basically, the only way I can proceed is by defeating 316 of them to get to Level 7.

Did I mention I fucking hate RPGs?

>> No.7101614

you never need to grind once in crystalis unless you're doing speedrunner shit or something

also you would've noticed you can't damage high level enemies unless you were skipping all the monsters to get to that point

and it never takes more than like a couple dozen level appropriate monsters to level which you'll kill just by progressing through the game normally

go be a faggot on >>>/r/eddit

Luckily, they expanded /vr/ to include 6th gen consoles so you can go start a Halo thread where you'll be more comfortable.

Neat. That would be ideal.

Why would I assume that I need to level up just to be able to damage enemies in this area?
No one in the game mentions it. The manual doesn't mention it. No RPG I've played works this way.
What's crazy is that some random dialog box locks you out of the area until you're "powerful" enough to enter.
I was Level 4 when I first made it to the boss.
Why did it let me in if I'm so underleveled?

OP this game is awesome and I love it, but I agree that the game shouldn't have done this thing to you. I don't know why people are trashtalking you. Well except that they are damaged 4chan creatures obviously.

Anyway I don't suppose you need to worry about this anymore in this game, right? I mean the problem was only that you didn't know about it. Or are you concerned that you'll have to grind, or that the game will be too easy? I can tell you now that it's a generally pretty easy game. Grinding is never a huge deal in it; there are certain locations where you can do it quite fast. But I guess you could start playing with a patch if you wanted. I mean, whatever.

Anyway be nice to the game, it deserves it even though it isn't perfect.

You're a pretty cool guy, anon.
Anyway, yeah. I'm not looking forward to grinding. And I'm a bit concerned that the game will keep using this arbitrary level requirement to make it last forever.
Apparently the Game Boy Color version removes this entirely.

Mostly I'm just kinda disheartened that the game leans on RPG mechanics rather than adventure ones.
I LOVE puzzles. And adventure games have some of the finest.

I'm tired of RPGs because they all play the same.
How many times is the solution just to grind for more levels - or at most, use an elemental attack. It's boring. It's uninspired.

Having a Puzzle Boss like I described would have elevated the game to no end - for me, at least.

I love me some Crystalis but yeah bosses being invincible with no explanation is terrible game design and some of the puzzles are basically impossible. in some ways its way better than Zelda but in others it's majorly flawed.

>> No.7104102

Ys and Xak do this too and it's annoying as fuck. Why aren't I damaging this boss? Oh because I'm not at the arbitrary level requirement! Oh I reached it after 20 minutes of grinding. Oops the boss now dies in 2 seconds!

It was trendy/popular for a while in the NES era to shoehorn RPG elements into practically everything. But just because it might've created some bad results back then doesn't mean it can never work or provide interesting/fun results.

Eventually you'll encounter a cave with a watery area right inside it that's full of cabbage-like monsters that barely move. Grind there to save time; it's quick. I think the endgame grinding area that speedrunners use is a short cave that's full of scorpions? Should be easy to recognize that one. So try it too, once you get that far. Assuming you keep playing (and don't apply a patch) I mean. It's really not a very big deal I think, but whatever, your preferences are your own.

I don't know why anon said that some puzzles in this game are impossible. I don't remember any like that. There are a number of puzzles... but yeah, this is mainly a running-around-and-fighting game. You don't find a lot of good story-and-puzzles games on the NES. I mean there's Maniac Mansion... Shadowgate comes to mind but that's just an arbitrary bunch of traps and locked doors and monsters crammed together without any plot. Hmm there's a King's Quest V port for some reason as well. But if you want great puzzles on that console then you're better off with Adventures of Lolo or something else like that.

People seem to think the Game Boy version is crap. I guess it changes the music completely for some insane reason or something? You probably shouldn't bother with it I guess.

Listen to this man
Nowadays everyone has his own idea of balance and what is more or less grindy, but back then devs just thought "throw that in to make 'em play for longer, dunno"
Thats why you sometimes you have to grind your soul in one game but then cheese through other, or even the same

>expanded /vr/
This board is doing it wrong. By expanding and adding 'generations' it becomes LESS retro.
The true way is to remove them so that the board becomes MORE retro with time. By now, anything pre-1995 should be declared not retro, and in the next phase SNES and Genesis should be phased out.
Eventually it will become a spacewar board before vanishing, allowing us to start again.
