For the bonus stages that use the core engine, the best is probably the one from the first game.

For the "novelty" ones, the planet-o-balls from the third one is superior. It's got a tighter puzzle concept but still requires skill and reflexes, and speed plays a factor. Plus, it relies way less on memorization than the one in 2.

Yep. I used to only like 3&K as the only Sonic game that I cared for, but I replayed it after a decade, and I can appreciate the improvements and what's-to-come, like the faster speed and scrolling. Yuji Naka is a fucking wizard. But that's not to say I always found some buggy parts of clipping through stuff and dying. I managed to get all chaos emeralds for the first time ever, and it was such a fucking pain in the ass with the last ones. Sheer memorization, and Tails is such ass.

I do but it's my least favorite out of the classic games unironically unless you count Knuckles' Chaotix I guess. The level design is just way too straight forward for me to be as interesting as the other games. Also fuck the special stages, I hate autoscrollers and they basically are, literally the opposite of what a Sonic stage in general should be since you can't go at your own pace.

Absolutely loved it as a kid, alongside the other 2D games. I think it's telling though that as I've gotten older I've only replayed the 3D titles mostly. I think they just have greater replay value.

I am Up 2 It

This is the first Genesis game that I ever owned. It came bundled with my Genesis model 2 back in the day. I thin the game still holds up really well.

There was a time where online communities had to push the opinion that Sonic 2 was the best one. Today, online communities have to push the opinion that Sonic 3 and Knuckles was the best one even though .001 per cent of all gamers played the complete experience (explaining why online communities used to stan 2 over 3&K).

I think Sonic 2 aged the worst. The soundtrack is bad and the levels look old. Casino Night looks like something from a Master System Sonic game.

My favourite Sonic is vanilla 3. None of the bloat from Knuckles and all the best tracks. The best Sonic is, of course, Mania Plus.

Recently replayed it with the Taxman remake and it's still the same Sonic 2 I've played since I was a baby (the new Hidden Palace zone and the actually 3D special stages were pretty cool though.)
3&K is my favorite but I still like 2 and 1.

No. I hated it. Back then i was really surprised how well it was received. As a sequel Sonic 2 completely sucked.

I love this game but getting Super Sonic is not worth it in this one. The special stages are awful and require too much memorization, and in some cases Super Sonic can make stages worse.
