When ROTT was released to the Doom-crazed public, it got fairly good reviews: "Rise of the Triad is sure to have every Doom freak in the world lining up just to drool over it." Said one magazine. "I've played ROTT and it's good. REEEEEEEEEEEEALLY good! Honestly, I can't think of any reason why every DOOM nut in the country won't flock to this game when it's released. It's beautiful, fast and challenging. Rise of the Triad is truly an awesome game." Computer Gaming World raved. Other magazines gave it similar reviews, so-so reviews or just dismissed it as another clone.

Hey, it could be fucking based. Doom and Doom II RPG are as is Wolfenstein RPG. I could see something with the lore of Blood working well with NPCs and simple quests like what is found in the iD RPGs. Duke too could be a campy tongue-in-cheek affair with lots of 4th wall breaking inside jokes for retro shooter fans. It would work well.

Now that I'm older it's time to check it out properly and get it running on my dad's pc for him too - I'm actually super excited now. Thanks for sharing your memories, dude. Also, are you in the States? Leaf here, I miss the days when a brand-new AAA PC game was around $40 CAD + taxes. New games here nowadays are $80 and the new-gen shit is now around $90. Speaking of the potential to mod DOOM RPG into other famous FPS rpgs, why aren't there any TCs or major mods for Strife? I assume it could be modded in the way described by putting in assets and changing dialogue/missions to be Duke or Blood themed. Would be very neat I think.

Modding strife is an absolute pain in the ass, and a lot of things work differently from doom/hexen/etc. Even stuff like the conversation ID system can be wonky af, especially compared to just blanket "replaces" designations.

It was good times, even if I was so young that my brother and sister btfo'd me on Goldeneye. My only memory of that game until I played it again years later was the music from the death screen hahahaha

Do you guys think DOOM would have been better or worse if Tom Hall's DOOM Bible, which he went on to adapt parts of for ROTT, would have been used? What about if it had actually been the one continuous world as Tom had originally thought it would be when writing said Bible?

Say what you will about Hall but he has creative skill, the Commander Keen series was a huge hit and it was his brainchild on top of Carmack's engine.

It is a remix of both games. It has a combination of the consolized Jaguar levels from Doom 1 with a large selection of Doom 2 levels (which are not consolized and thus do have performance issues unlike the Doom 1 levels). The 2 games are combined in one campaign and the Cyber Demon is moved near the end with the Spider Mastermind being the final boss of the game.

It is a cool way to experience Doom. If you've played it, its nothing new, but its a cool remix of the games with a cool new soundtrack. I know the original is a classic, but honestly I think the quality is heavily frontloaded and once you get past the first few levels where the classic soundtrack shines, I actually prefer new ambient soundtrack. Runs great for a 90s fps, but obviously modern source ports blow it away in performance. Not sure if it works with any sourceports. To be honest, I've never run Doom with one, only Hexen (which was awesome at high resolution/framerate).

ROTT wasn't very successful in sales (especially compared to Doom), but since it was a good game that had many features that Doom didn't have (Even features Quake doesn't have...even some Unreal doesn't have) it developed a small, cult following. Most people ignored it (or didn't know it existed). Or they just dismissed it as a thing of the past after hearing about the 90 degree wall thing. Many critcs at the time gave the game good scores and liked it but it also got shit on in some reviews for its dated tech. A real shame honestly because it really is a good game and a totally unique take on FPS design. For better or worse, there really is no other shooter like it.

I finally realized something about Ion Fury. As much as I love the gameplay, the aesthetics, and Shelly's really hot with a great voice, they didn't lean far enough AT ALL into Shelly's role as a police officer in this hellhole future D.C. Shelly's lines are more indicative of a woman being badass than a woman of the law. Instead of
>Get that fucking jalopy out of here!
Why couldn't it be something like
>Article 62, paragraph C, VTOL operating illegally. Deadly force authorized.
or
>Your second amendment won't save you now
as you gun down some enemies. Just anything at all related to her profession for fuck's sake. But by the same token, I think it would have been career suicide for everyone involved considering the times we live in to have a video game where you play as a cop gleefully engaging in police brutality.
tl;dr Ion Fury is 20 years too late to the party to be the game it oughta be but man that shotgun tickles my balls and so does Shelly.

This one is by Julie Bell, it was considered for the cover of Shadow Warrior at some point during its VERY long development history (its earliest prototype dates to 1992, as a very crude and simple demo of a corridor shooter). If you've ever looked at its development content, it's kind of crazy how much it changed at different times, the reboot from 2013 draws a bunch of ideas from there, like the emphasis on magical spells, or the magazine fed crossbow with the grenade darts.
Compare to the 1997 game, which left out a lot of the spellcasting, Lo Wang instead using mostly modern weapons and sci-fi gadgets.

Anyway, I like it a lot, it has color, and shows a cool muscled ninja dude in mortal combat with a big bad snake monster.

First release of PSX Doom is Doom and Doom 2 packed together as two campaigns.
Final Doom for the PSX is a mix of levels picked from TNT Evilution, The Plutonia Experiment, and The Master Levels. Since some of TNT's levels are too intense for the PSX, and most of Plutonia's levels are, a bunch of TNT's levels are modified, and most of Plutonia's levels are removed completely, mostly replaced with Master Levels.
I think that 90% of the Master Levels are kinda bad, so I don't love this decision. TNT also had a lot of really good and atmospheric music originally, which is replaced with the same old Hodges ambient themes, which I'm not crazy about either.

>>7097761
Yeah, music and sound design by Aubrey Hodges, so it's the same set of stuff there. I don't exactly love his music, it's ok at times for D64, but I think overall it's kind of boring. The sound design is excellent in some ways, but falters in others. In my opinion anyway.

For content, a bunch of Doom 1 levels are modified to make them perform better on the PSX, using existing "Console Doom" sets, this wasn't really done as much with Doom 2, so on those levels performance isn't always so great. The way the Arch-Vile works makes him unsuitable for the PSX, and he has a lot of frames originally, the decision by Williams was to plain axe him completely, since they felt they couldn't do him justice. Replacing his actor is a meathook prop, occasionally he's replaced with a Revenant in the levels. On UV, you can occasionally find a Doom 2 monster in a Doom 1 secret area. Icon Of Sin is completely absent due to pic related, instead there's two Spiderminds.

PSX Doom does overall add some cool stuff like colored sector lighting, the occasional use of an animated burning sky, as well as reverb for sound effects. There's a couple of new levels as well. The Final Doom release supports the use of the PSX mouse peripheral.

Overall, it's pretty cool, but D64 is much cooler.

There's a Playstation Doom TC for GzDoom, yes (to allow for the colored sector stuff, sound reverb, etc). There's a version for imitating PSX monster and weapon behavior (and overall this gets it pretty damn close, though not perfect), and a version without, if you want to play the levels with gameplay mods.

This is a PSX Doom TC which is made from a modified fork of GzDoom to make it as close as possible:
https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/94139-update-v2-psxdoom-psxfinaldoom-doom64-on-gzdoom-gec-master-edition-dec-17-2018/

Here's Consolation Prize, which is basically the "vaccinated" version of the PSX Doom level sets, complete with Final Doom level set:
https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?t=55298
I personally find that Immoral Conduct Special Edition (which you can grab a GzDoom conversion of here: https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=48036 ) has an aesthetic that somehow fits nicely with the slightly gritty aesthetic of the Playstation levels, with their darker appearance, grainy textures, and colored lighting.

ITT: Post your controversial opinions
I think Final Doomer is a more interesting way to play Doom since it revamps the pistol in such a way that pistol starts aren't about dodging enemies and obstacles until you find a shotgun, but about enjoying the act of killing demons.

The experimental ones are fun for their high damage output, I'll say the Egon Gun, though you get it awfully late.
Overall, the shotgun is good as a general workhorse, since you can carry lots of shells with you. I wish there was a simple way to modify the weapons so that I could make the MP5/M4 not be really bleh.

If you haven't played Scythe yet, I'd recommend that the strongest. It starts off very easy and ends very hard so it has the full spectrum of difficulty and will engage you no matter what. Also the low difficulty of the first episode (first ten maps) means you can try to beat them in one run without dying, and if that's too easy, you can do it with fast monsters on.

And as for other maps: (vanilla) Base Ganymede, Doom Zero, Suspended in Dusk, No End in Sight, (limit-removing) any of the DBP's (Doomer Boards Projects), there's like 30 of them, try DBP20 or DBP01 (this one doesn't have difficulty settings so you'll have to change it to skill 1 if you want to make it easier), Double Impact, A.L.T., Sacrament, Deathless, Deus Vult, End Point, JPCP, Nerve.wad, Scythe 2, Scythe X, Sigil, Syringe, Struggle: Antaresian Legacy, Whitemare

Preacher.wad is by the same author. It's not cozy at all, it's extremely chaotic, but I thought I'd recommend it because it's my favorite PWAD. The way the levels are designed is, the ammo is spread thinly across the level so you have to keep moving to get more ammo or you run out, but this constant progression keeps alerting new monsters.

The aesthetics and level design are really reminiscent of plutonia 1, especially the first 15ish levels. Later on it attempts to "pick up where plutonia left off" which basically means the levels get a lot longer, harder, and somewhat confusing to navigate. The visuals never really change drastically. I think it leans more into the vague jungle/military theme of the first, but it's still mostly stock textures. You'll probably like well enough if you liked the first but expect a challenge.

If you want the truth alfnigger and its fag friends
THE GOLDEN AGE WAS GARBAGE, Many useless clones were born out of DOOM and Wolf3d success!
only DOOM was the best of it, and even back then people praised quake 1 only for its graphics and multiplayer, and later on the 1st machinima demos.
Half Life renovated the genre from its stagnation along with Quake 2, 3, Unreal and later on RTCW.
If you want to BLAME a game who you zoom shit shills it in secret, its the 1st Console Medal Of Honor games from 1999, who streamlined everything in the industry due to easiness of production, while the PC one(MOHAA) stood away from it and became one of the best FPS games from its time, since 2015 took notes from RTCW, though all of it was too late because the industry followed the console standards due to easiness of making corridor narrative shooters and the many rejected hollywood screenwriters working for free.

And if you really, REALLY want to know and BLAME who is the one behind curtains for what FPS is what it is now, blame Stephen Spielberg since the asshole had its tentacles on the industry thanks to the kike friends he has along with the fact that he was one of the majoritarian owners of Dreamworks Games.

and to shoot you in the balls, HALF LIFE IS STILL QUAKE, IN CODE AND EVERYTHING, EVEN ITS SPEED AND GAMEPLAY WHO EARLIER MAPS EVEN HAD IT BEFORE HL1 WAS A THING, because it isn't made to be played slowly, but FAST due to the AI reaction times.
Oh and a nice bonus so i can repeat myself again and laugh at you, Halo didn't killed FPS as people claims it, it was always console World War 2 Shooters, who by irony, were made for sony consoles at 1st. Because Sony has to ruin everything in gaming since 1994.
And eat a Dick alf, Half life is great, Quake series with its ups and downs is great, and without those to revitalize the industry, the genre would had died.

The dev already released the port for free years ago but took it down for legal reasons. Of course nothing truly disappears from the internet. Technically it's a port of the PS1 version, but the PS1 and Saturn are basically the same besides a couple alternate levels.
The Build version is a completely different game. You can play it with BuildGDX.

In ROTT the player characters hold a pistol in one hand and a weird laser rifle looking thing in the other. They shoot with the pistol for bullet weapons (even though you probably are actually using dual pistols or the MP40) and shoot with the raygun thing for the missle weapons.

The inconsistency of difficulty is actually what I hate most about Scythe 1. The small size to the maps helps with blasting through them at least, but the early maps are pathetically easy while the last maps get stupid fucking difficult by comparison. Difficulty scaling is indeed a good thing, but going from babby's first WAD to "I hope you're savescumming and not pistol starting" makes for really shitty progression.

The later levels in Scythe 2 can also be pretty bullshit, but nowhere near as much of a difference from the earlier levels. Its a much more acceptable shift in difficulty.

There is also this gun he is holding in the imtermission screen. I don't know if that was supposed to be the same one he has on his player sprite or not.

I assume the reason it was done like this is because they didn't have a way to swap out part of the sprite on the fly so they would've had to have a whole new character sprite for each weapon held, plus the rotations/animations etc.

Yes, it's probably my biggest regret about Doom and Douk. The character sprite not reflecting the weapon held. But I mean, I get it. When you consider the era, this is a lot of data, and very little to gain by using unique sprites when most people are probably just playing the campaign solo.

Right and when playing Deathmatch they aren't exactly going to be taking time to admire the other players sprite before taking a rocket to the face. It is a shame though. I know some modern Doom mods add weapon specific sprites, I wonder if there are any similar ones for Duke, Blood or Shadow Warrior?

Another thing could be to actually add the weapon that the sprites show. I always wished the pistol was changed to that rifle that Doomguy and the zombie grunts are holding. I think Brutal Doom[/sprite] adds it. It could behave exactly the same, I just want that gun to be in the game.

I think Brutal Doom adds it. It could behave exactly the same, I just want that gun to be in the game.

Why didn’t Doom 2 even pretend to have some new boss fights? Icon of Sin is cool but it barely counts

Doom 2 could have had a pair of Mancubi to act as early game bosses, then could have introduced them as standard enemies as the game progresses (like Doom did with the Barons). Revenants or even an Archvile could have worked too

Probably because it would mean having to do an all new player sprite set for every single weapon in the game, which back in times where games were still distributed on floppies, wasn't a great alternative.
In Quake's case, I assume they wouldn't want to go through the effort of having to pair up a special player character model of each gun with the player's model (and with how fast the multiplayer got, it made little difference). Perhaps it using vertex animation in place of skeletal animation made this more difficult? I only speculate.

Think of it a bit like Aliens, where the guns used were actually just old WW2 era M1A1 Tommyguns shooting blanks (and with a bunch of stuff bolted on), but in canon of the movie they were futuristic pulse rifles. This here is a completely unremarkable pistol caliber carbine, but it has kind of a cool look to it, so you can put it in Doom and say that it's also some sort of sci-fi assault rifle.

They had less time to get it done than they did Doom 1 (though they had more experience and more mappers), and GT didn't want them wasting time making all new assets for monsters. All the new monsters in Doom 2 are either altered from existing sprites (chaingunner, meatball, knight, arachno), or made from monsters which weren't finished for the first game (fatso, boner, archie, icon), and thus had existing assets (and possibly even code) which were mostly done and they just needed to finish. I guess there's also the gnatzee, which they just ported over from Wolf3D.

All things considered, the new monsters are excellent and they really round out and complete the bestiary of the classic Doom games. Icon Of Sin isn't really that amazing of a bossfight, but it's at least cool and novel to look at, and it beats just ending the game on a cyberdemon or spidermind. I guess what I'm saying is that it was the thought that mattered, and I appreciate that Sandy pushed for trying to have SOMETHING to end the game on.

If it's any consolation, there's been some more novel takes on the big bastard in some megawads over the years, like with Plutonia 2, D2TWID, Bloodstain, and recently in 2048.

This, I love hearing about old weird FPS even if they are shit. That's one good thing about FPS being so prolific in the 90s... There is always something new to see, I seriously doubt anyone has played every shooter ever released, or even every 2.5 sprite based shooter released.

Been making my half of the map for a community project where two people each make half of the map. Mostly a remake of my vague recollections of Nirvana (I actually looked at Nirvana after and I got it all wrong) but also bits and pieces of other memories. No lighting yet and barely any things.

Anybody know a good place to extralegally get Duke Nukem World Tour edition? Its not in the OP, and the version on torrent sites has really poor audio quality that Ive heard was patched later.

Mr Friendly is my favourite cozy Doom mod - you don't kill anything and just roam the levels talking to demons and doing little sidequests for them.

Would make sense. I just wonder what the fuck happened with Shadow Warrior 2, why they turned it into a fucking looter shooter without level design, shat on the pieces of story that the reboot actually did decently, and also why they made the new support character an annoying nagging bitch as "Lo Wang's conscience", when Lo Wang has at most been depicted as an amoral and cruel anti-hero (hence the support character in the previous game actually fitting him).

Different dude here. Ion Fury is pretty fun but my major problem with it is that the detailed levels are almost too big so that secret hunting becomes a chore and finding keys can be a real pain in the ass sometimes. I searched each level high and low and found maybe a quarter of the secrets in the game, I can get behind well-hidden secrets but these became too obscure. That being said the gunplay absolutely kicks ass, the starting pistol and the crossbow are my absolute favourites
