The chance in media from cart to disc was the big brands just showing us how little they actually respected us as consumers and the money we gave they in return for the experience they gave us.

CDs were cheaper to mass produce and so much quicker to be damaged and yet the pricing of games remained the same. I mean at that cost the companies could have gave lifetime guarantees to replace damaged discs.
Not everybody had access to writers or rewriters and even at that. The anti piracy copy protection kinda hampered that.

Carts were factors more robust. Sure the odd pin might get damaged but the owner could fix that if pushed. It was universally known all you ever had to do was blow a cart and it worked...

Carts could carry more memory simply by making them a bit taller ala virtua racing , carts could be joined together to become more than the some of their parts ala sonic and knuckles,
Carts could do what cds could do ala RE2....

And had no loading times.....

RE2 on the 64 required a hell of a lot of compression and a lot of dedication to make that work. Cartridges had their advantages but they also had their downsides as well.

If only it had games, or a good controller, or graphics without a cum filter over them, or enough data capacity for cool FMVs and high quality audio, then it may have been able to compete.

Thats what they get paid for....

Aside from Umd's on psp the greatest majority of the handheld market has kept to carts.

These have marginally ebbed and flowed in size due to advances but generally remained the same size if not shrunk meanwhile their outputs are so very different... Look at an old school Gameboy cart and a switch cart.

No reason not to return to carts... For all intents and purposes High capacity preloaded SD cards.... Or thumb drives.. Or... Well you get the idea...

Going back to the OG gameboy and a switch.... Yes they are very very different animals... But adjusted for inflation a Gameboy in release was say £70 to £100 in 1989 thats between What ? £160 to £220 today... A switch cost what on release? £280? Whats the spec of a switch compared to the previous disc based consoles of the last few gen?

They should bring back cart based consoles.... especially in opposition to pure download consoles... The functionality of the original switch shows that carts are extremely viable...

No excuses....

Resident Evil 2 I think is the only cart to have fmv. At least fmv of that quality. games like Starcraft have 1st gen quicktime-quality fmvs, but RE2 for the N64 looks better than the PS1 stuff.

The reason is that RE2 actually had an MPEG-1 decoder chip built into the cart. The game itself was 512 mb (or 64 MB), and I believe half of that was for fmv. they did a ton of tricks, like narrowing the range of colors and dropping every third frame, but when all was said and done, all the FMVs from both discs of RE2 are there, and thanks to the expansion pak, they are in high resolution, too!

Cds do make better arts and crafts materials, got that going for them....

Re2 fmvs on the 64 look quite worse than ps1 ones when comparing side by side, but it's really unnoticeable when playing.

>> No.7095450

>>7095432
It does state they are a bit more washed out and have frames removed... but... but that's 2 discs worth of fmvs on 1 cart in HD with the expansion pak.

2 discs worth of fmvs, on 1 cart... and even with the compression it's hardly like they are .gif quality...

2 discs worth on 1 cart... that's all there is too say

I'm old enough to have participated in the great console wars I was a Sega fan boy.

Cart > CD

Or in this instance 1 cart = 2 cds.

Everything stated about media production values crashing but game prices not still holds true too.

Hardware would have still advanced.

Moore's law was lame propaganda.
