There's really quite a lot that you can do with GzDoom if you put in the effort (and if you're well versed in ZScript). I haven't looked into what this is at all, but this isn't a difficult thing to do if you applied a persistent hub system to Doom and Doom 2's levels (like with Strife and Hexen), and then altered them a little bit to work with them.

GZDoom is a very powerful engine that has already had full-fledged games made on it, and many mods which may as well be their own games. The flak GZDoom gets is in regards to pure experiences of Doom, updates breaking old mods and maps, and performance issues on larger maps.

>The flak GZDoom gets is in regards to pure experiences of Doom
You can configure it to be close enough to matter, there'll be a couple of small things which will be off, but overall I think it's perfectly good to use it as a base for building upon (what's pretty much) Doom's base gameplay, if you want to do that.

>updates breaking old mods and maps
That does happen, but I can't think of a lot of examples of those. I think Pirate Doom was broken for a little while? I remember a lot of people were pissed about that because Pirate Doom rules.

>and performance issues on larger maps

Don't mistake me, I use GZDoom all the time. Really, the only reason anyone ought to use anything else is purity for the sake of it, or recording demos. You will be pleased to see where Base Ganymede ranks in difficulty compared to other megawads
https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/107015-wad-progression-for-skill-improvement/
It's a Doom 1 megawad so the difficulty will be lower since there are no revenants or arch-viles etc. Base Ganymede doesn't have particularly difficult encounters, it instead achieves difficulty by giving you barely any health and wearing you down by attrition. For example, IIRC there is only one spot in the entire megawad with two medkits side-by-side and that's on E1M7. Hitscanners are a tiny minority of enemies so with skill (and/or memorization) you can dodge almost everything so it's very fair. These are some of the best-looking maps which is doubly good considering it's a vanilla-compatible Doom 1 megawad using stock textures. I like the atmosphere and the music. Something about the setting captures my imagination.

After bg, i'm gonna delve into no end sight, which has been praised as very challenging and great doom 1 wad.

My personal ranking of Levelord's Duke Nukem levels including his unreleased single player maps and World Tour maps:

>god tier
The Abyss
Sewers Below or Sewer

>good tier
Warp Factor
Flood Zone
LA Rumble

>ok tier
Raw Meat
Hotel Hell
Sewage Company or Sweeney
Shop-N-Bag
Pigsty
Red Ruckus
Tour de Nukem

>shit tier
Incubator
Spin Cycle
Bank Roll
Movie Set
Rabid Transit
Fahrenheit
XXX Stacy
Bloody Hell
Prima Arena

>unrated (because they are kinda awesome, but shit at the same time)
Lunatic Fringe
Tier Drops

He has a pretty mediocre record for a level designer. Allen Blum was certainly better.

These maps add another type of challenge on top of vanilla Doom ones.
You are not fighting a set of monsters on designated locations - you are a speck of dust, about to be crushed by an enormous wave. You need to run, hide, conserve ammo, make monsters infight each other, retreat carefully and keep your distance.
I guess that's the appeal - overcoming impossible odds.

Well it's more of a technical concept right now.
Here's what it looks like - just a field with remote areas representing individual levels - I would not call it a seamless open world.

There are some quests and NPC's, but they are experimental and scarce.
For example, you get a quest from marine in e1m1 to find another marine in e1m9 - and when you find this marine, he gives you a plasma rifle.
The idea is cool though

I got Baron's Barbeque from 1995 (https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom/a-c/baron).). This level fucking sucked but showed some signs of promise. The author had the good sense to group barons and cacos together so you could make them infight and then berserk punch the remaining baron. Map 01: Water Facility
Being the first map, there isn't much to say in terms of difficulty, with only zombies, imps, and some demons to take care of in an open area. A short hike up a cliffside. Wasn't sure how to progress at the start until I hit a random rock which built a staircase for me. The large fight in pic related was impressive but had no strategy behind hiding in the doorway (entering gets you riddled with bullets since there's no armour). Yeah, exactly.
And the concept is there - you've got 7-9 areas, and each one of them has something of value.
For example, talking about the first map, including half levels from e1 + Romero's Tech Gone Bad:

Here we have a tricky temple map with some dickish moments. Starts you out next to a window where some shotgunners in the next room can immediately shoot you, then you have to go swimming in some nukage with some spectres and no radsuit. I died twice when the map throws an archvile at you with no cover, luckily I discovered a secret wall you could lower to get out of the room you're trapped in. The loss of life from the two nukes that were dropped pales in comparison to what the loss of life would have been on both sides from a full-scale invasion of Japan. It was probably mostly a power move to scare the Soviets in the end anyways, but that's still a justification. Nukes may be an unforgivable sin, but when weighing the options of two unforgivable evils in wartime you have to be utilitarian in thinking for your country to win/less of your countrymen to die. Look at all the desperate fighting in the Pacific - if you were a general would you really want to commit more of your already exhausted men to invade a country when there's an alternative?

I generally think it's more fun to use different .midis than the original ones, makes it a little bit more distinct. At least, not restricting ourselves to nothing but D1/D2 ones.

>but there are concerns that if we started now it might interfere with the blood project or the planned quake project. Perhaps we would be stretching ourselves thin with 3 projects at once
That's a very real concern, I'm kind of stretched thin even now, lol. Perhaps 94 Protons Of /vr/ can be a 2021 project?

Wow, it seems like everyone has different ideas about what we're trying to do. I personally like the idea of lost level style maps, that believably could have been part of plutonia, like doom the way Id did but for plutonia. Obviously it's a bit dated visually, but pretty much all conventional maps still takes cues from its level design, so without the aesthetics it may as well be its own thing. That's just my interest because I really love the original though, and I think a throwback would be a fun exercise. I guess it will ultimately be up to the project leader.

Plutonia obviously has an aesthetic though, which involves filthy brickwork (gray, tan, brown), patched grass and vines (green, brown), rusty metal (dark brown) wood (pale tan), and water, sometimes murky (blue or brown), then a sky that's either a bright gray overcast, or a strong red miasma.

As you say, if it would just be a nod to the gameplay, which are common conventions these days, how is it really special and Plutonia like? It would be getting pretty brown, but there's more colors typical to Plutonia which can be used to break up the brown.

This is very good because you got the most boring stuff out of the way. Maps will just get better and better from here. The IWADs are important to play because of history but I found myself getting lost and bored when replaying Doom 2 and TNT and I still haven't finished those playthroughs.
>any recs to playthrough?
Quake: original campaign, mission pack 1, mission pack 2.
I like the Mark V WinQuake source port. It's like Crispy Doom in that you can play in 320x240 or 640x480 with wide-screen rendering. It's the modern source port closest to DOS, IMO; I would just use DOS but for some reason the game runs in slo-mo when there are too many particles when using DOSBox.

Duke 3D: original four episodes.
I like DOS for Duke, but if you want a modern source port, use EDuke32 or RedNukem. I was using RedNukem because I found a really annoying bug in EDuke but it may have been patched by now, I dunno, I've just been using DOS Duke.
I like the way MIDIs sound in DOSBox, but if you want to use a modern port, you can use the digital music packs: http://sc55.duke4.net/games.php
Just put that zip file in a new directory in your Duke folder called "autoload" and enable autoload upon starting up EDuke/RedNukem. Also I think you can find a high-quality SFX mod somewhere on that above website as well that you also put in the autoload folder. It takes sounds from the PlayStation port or something IIRC. They sound slightly better, good for a modern port but obviously unnecessary for DOS

ROTT: I never played it since it's based on the Wolfenstein engine

Doom: too many custom maps to list. I'd say do Scythe as your first custom map. Play using the Crispy Doom source port and try the options like vertical weapon recoil and test out the new HUD with -/+ keys. Try it with the Vanilla Doom Smooth Weapons mod.
You can also download Doom digital music packs from thesame website as above: http://sc55.duke4.net/games.php#doom
To get them to work in GZDoom just load them like any other mod, to use them in Crispy Doom you gotta configure crispy.cfg IIRC.
Download a MIDI player called Virtual MIDI Synth. I think you need to also download MIDIMapper from the same website if VMS doesn't work. Set your MIDI player in Doom to portmidi to use it. Anyway, download that MIDI player, and download these soundfonts:
Mysung Kite (I use this for most MIDIs),
RLNDGM (Jimmy composes his MIDIs with a very similar soundfont, so while the individual instruments sound flatter compared to a 1+gig soundfont like Mysung Kite, the balance of the instruments across the whole sounds much better)
Orpheus (another large soundfont file like Mysung Kite. Sounds good, I like the other better, but you might like this one)
SC-55 soundfont replicates the Roland SC-55, the device the original Doom and Duke music was composed on, so this soundfont sounds the same as the digital music packs above, but the music packs sound vastly, vastly better because it's lossless audio recorded on an actual Roland sound canvas. Anyway, this soundfont is still good to have even though I never use it.
Arachno soundfont, only because this is what you want should you ever play Valiant.wad
I don't like tinkering with soundfonts as it takes forever so those are the must-haves I think.

Billy is fucked this time - word is Jace has been pissed with his TG purchase from the beginning because Walter Day and Billy misrepresented things and it ended up being a big pile of shit when he finally got it, full of literal frauds like Billy and Todd Rodgers. TG is going for the jugular in this countersuit, they are attacking his entire career/reputation that he claims in his lawsuit was destroyed by Jace/TG removing his scores and saying he cheated. They have proof he didn't get the first perfect Pac-Man. His famous supposed award from Namco as "Video Gamer of the Century" (pic related)? They have proof Walter Day created that award a month before this photo and they then called Namco and said it would be a good photo op for them to let Billy play a live perfect game of Pac-Man and then presenting him with an award. The award he is being given here is literally just congratulating him on the perfect Pac-Man he had just played. Walter and Billy lied and said Namco gave the 'Century' award. They have proof of all this and can easily ask Namco themselves if they gave him such an award. This shit has been rumored for years but now it will be presented in a court of law where Billy will have to actually prove otherwise, he won't be able to slither his way out this time.

I prefer pistol starts, but I see no reason to be inflexible about it. For example, I did a continuous playthrough of Adventures of Square just to blast through it and see what it's all about, so I suppose it just depends. Doom I play pistol starts so I don't have to worry about exiting with 10% health, and also carrying weapons over tends to trivialize the starting sections of the next map. You don't NEED to carry over weapons, everything the map maker himself thinks you need is given to you.

The real question is whether to save or not. I would just say play however you want so that you play through as many map sets as possible, and anything that is your favorite you can grind over and over with pistol-starts no-saves attempts. If you attempt to blind pistol start no save everything you run the risk of playing shitty maps over and over with no saves and burning yourself out

A method I discovered while playtesting anonymous maps is play pistol starts no saves, but start on skill 1, just in case there is any bullshit. This pretty much guarantees you get through the map with no saves in a speedy manner, and you still get the thrill of falling for each trap and battling on. Then, since you already know the map, you can try it again on skill 2, and skill 3, and finally skill 4. You could even try again with fast monsters and then nightmare after that. This is a good training method, especially for difficult maps, because playing without saves will hone your skill. However this can also lead to burnout if you start on too low/high of a skill level or if you blindly employ this time-consuming method on an unfun set of maps. That's why I say, just play through however you want, and save the grinding for the really good maps you find

The Saturn version is a completely different game from the DOS version. It has a sourceport too, Powerslave EX. It's technically unfinished and not officially available anymore, but it works fine and can be found easily with a little googling.

The Doom TC is called Return of the Triad and it kicks ass. Recommended. I just wish it was longer and it could be truer to the original in some ways. It was apparently made by the guys who went on to do Amid Evil:
Official site:
https://www.elzee.co.nz/rotttc/
Doomwiki Entry:
https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Return_of_the_Triad
ICARUSLIV3S did a Doom Mod Madness on it:
https://youtu.be/eWtohkHlhZU
And there was at some point a project called Re-Return of the Triad that was supposed to make it truer to the original ROTT but doesn't look like it went anywhere:

Absolutely fair, I don't like it all that much either. I like smooth weapon animations, but for monsters it looks weird, probably because there's only 8 rotations.

There's real smoothness in the original Doom frames already, the frame offsets are just kind of sloppy, making some animations look more jittery than they really are. The Doom Spritefix Project addresses that (among a couple of stray pixels and stuff like that), and I think it looks way better than Smooth Doom's monsters, everything animates at the same speed and the same number of frames. Give that a try instead and see.

GZDoom already uses asmjit. The speed gains with really complex zscript are very noticeable. But JIT isn't going to magically speed up everything, though, as most of the overhead you see in stupid maps like nuts comes from native code (mainly sight checks). There's also the fact every single actor executes over ten times more code each tic than in vanilla doom (plus physics functions like P_XYMovement also have extra added complexity).

But you speak of "threading" as the solution to everything. Well, anon, it's easy to talk and theorize about things you have no idea about. Your suggestion clearly shows that you've never worked with multithreaded code. I have, and it's one of the reasons why I no longer have any sanity left. Game engines don't work in a way that would allow logic to simply be multithreaded.

You've also mentioned lightmaps as a way to speed up lighting. That's not going to work on an engine like this, where all world geometry is mutable.
