Rise of the Triad is fucking based. It was built on a highly modified Wolf3d engine. The finished product is by no means an engineering marvel but had a certain charm to it. Here are some of the things that are in the ROTT engine:
Multi level orthogonally based levels.
Room over room (sort of).
Transparency.
Textured Floors and Ceilings.
Dynamic Lighting.
FLIC support (although we never had any in the game).
CINEMATIC engine (also never used. The ending sequence is scripted but doesn't utilize the cool shit developed before hand).
11 player network support.
Masked Walls (Textures with holes in them).
Moving Walls. Stairs (sort of).

I love these maps, but they are too long if only because the same MIDI gets old after too long.

I love playing this run myself and 4shockblast is one of the best players in the world

Here at this arena fight, the framerate nosedives like crazy, and I don't really know why, there's not THAT many monsters, and there's certainly not that many linedefs or dynamic lights at play, I can only assume that the ACS that's running is completely retarded somehow and doing a bunch of unnecessary shit that it shouldn't.

Ventured back to 95 with second map of Cabal series by Cranium — a known person in Doom community who also took a part in the gaming industry.
Cramped space full of pinkies and lack of weapons make a pretty harsh start. SSG is hidden far in the level and practically the only weapons of choice are chaingun with rocket launcher. There is a room with lone baron, whom you are apparently supposed to kill with help of barrels.
Made it on 3rd try. Second secret is not shown on demo, but is hidden behind a shootable switch inside the drain of toxic sludge, which I originally thought was a dead end

Oh yeah, that's Sverre Kvernmo's really early work. Every couple of years he shows up again with a map. He improved a lot with time, I didn't play all of Cabal, but some of them made it into the Master Levels, and they're some of the weakest there (such as Mephisto's Maosoleum), so it kind of makes me dread how rough the others were for not qualifying.

This ain't worth playing. It's kind of like Wolfenstein 3D level design if you made it somehow more plain and less straight forward, keys are hidden in secrets, which you're expected to find (granted, you're given Computer Maps, but damn). Some of the music would be pretty nice and spooky in theory, but they tracks are straight up 5 second loops, so they grate instead. You could probably use one of them as one of the main riffs in a much longer track, and that could be pretty cool.

This red sci-fi city skyline is neat, I imagine it may have been nabbed from some old adventure game or something.

I rolled Space Communications (https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/s-u/scom)), a short spaceport/tech themed map made in 2012. The map was very easy, only having Imps, Zombies and one Pinky to deal with. I'm glad that the author took the time to replace the music and sky texture, which suites map's space theme. I couldn't get 100% kills because all of the enemies didn't teleport in, which the author acknowledges asa bug in the text file. Overall, pretty nice, maybe could've benefitted from some more color variation. I think it would make for a nice MAP01 for a larger set of maps.

My biggest gripe with how they designed Nuumguy is that he feels like some kind of Ironman/Batman character that uses a bunch of fancy gadgets to finish the job rather than purely his own grit.
Just look at the classic cover of the original - he's getting surrounded and fucked up by a horde of demons and still coming out on top with just a bashed up security outfit and a pistol. Meanwhile, in the newer ones a lot of his "powers" that the player uses seem to be enabled by his super-suit (equipment, double-jumping and dashing, etc.)

The difficulty curve of aa is all over the place, I think because it was made by so many different people. It sort of resets at the end of each episode but then it throws in some weirdly long or hard ones midway. You're right, it is based. My obligatory Doom RPG post for those who still haven't played it:
Carmack wrote the engine (over a weekend, if I recall correctly. He said he decided to finally check out gaming on cell phones and found them incredibly lame so decided to make something himself) and it was clearly inspired by the type of predominantly Western classic first person dungeon crawler PC RPGs that Carmack had played back in the day. He said he decided to go with the style he did as a way to design within the limitations of the platform instead of making a shitty half assed platformer that plays like shit or whatever.

There were 5 using the engine. Doom RPG, Doom II RPG, Wolfenstein RPG and Orcs & Elves 1 and 2, an original traditional fantasy IP made for the engine.

You can find all the iD RPG games and an emulator to play them here. I run them on my Android phone with J2ME Loader and it works great. There's an onscreen keypad for the buttons. If you want to play on PC just use the Windows version of J2ME Loader.

I think it's primarily due to low skill mappers thinking they're a shortcut to making their maps better, and they see something that looks cool on R667, often adding it without really thinking about what role and utility it has (which is often how you get a huge mishmash of the R667 repository just thrown in).
It's seldom a thought of "I really want a monster of this specific role for this or that encounter, but it's not in the base game."
That mapset there wouldn't have really been improved by dialing it back to the stock monsters though, nor if the author had to work out tricks with voodoo scripts and stuff to get some of his effects, because his primary problem is that he doesn't know anything about level design.

The better GzDoom mapsets with custom monsters tend to have their own, or alters existing ones for its purpose.

I can see why - it has a fuckton of custom enemies: green flying demons that scream FUCK YOU and flip you off when they die, two-headed machinegunners that use autoshotgun instead, helicopters that spam rockets at you and probably the worst shit I've encountered in Doom - new twoheaded autoshotgunners riding on a spider that's much more aggressive and doesn't stop shooting ever. Also last level has mimic Archvile that's disguised as a medikit.
Levels are nothing interesting either, get worse and worse as you play, culminating with a Downtown-style map.
You can imagine it's a pain in the ass to play, I died a lot and in the final level I started to use resurrect because I just wanted to finish it.

Just beat Episode 1 of Duke Nukem 3D for the first time tonight. It's pretty good. Levels feel a lot more labyrinthian and vast than Doom's are even when they're smaller, and the shotgun feels great to use with a really satisfying sound and pump. Chaingun doesn't feel as punchy, but the Rockets and pipebombs more than make up for it. Way too many secrets, though, and some of the items seem kind of pointless. I can't remember if it's whitemare 1 or 2 but one of those had an encounter that left me extremely pissed off. It was a narrow dogbone-shaped hallway that had blocking mid texture walls, and hell knights at the end of one side, along with a few chaingunners outside of the hallway firing at you between the bars, the door is yellow on the other side and you don't have a card for it, so you're stuck in there.

There was another map that had a door tied to a crusher in some part of the map so it'd randomly get stuck when you try to open it.
I think this was all whitemare one though.

I actually came here to say this too, I enjoy Plutonia's gameplay but hot damn is it ever visually uninspired. It's so drab that I barely ever want to play it, sprucing up the textures and lighting would work wonders. I'm almost certain this blandness has something to do with the high enemy count on older hardware back in the '90's too, where you would almost certainly have needed to sacrifice those sweet, sweet textures for performance.

Use MBF 2.04 with the sigil_compat wad. Try Sigil with the Doom 4 Vanilla mod. It's so fucking good. Put sigil, d4v.wad, d4v.deh, and doom2.wad in the MBF folder and use this command line:

Different anon here. The good levels in TnT are great, the bad levels err on the side of "where the fuck do I go?"-styled gameplay. It's a mixed bag but still worth a shot, I'd personally play Plutonia first because even though it's challenging I never felt that the level layouts were outright terrible to the point of frustration like TnT's weakest maps were.

You need a file called novert.com to disable the forward and backward movement of the mouse. Even with mouselook on moving the mouse forward mor back makes you move. Apparently it's an issue with alot or old shooters. Google novert.com and you'll find it and instructions on what to do.

download a program called novert.com from the idgames archive. launch that program in dosbox, then launch doom from that same window. for example:

Download the DOSBox pixel perfect fork and use that.
