==Play Rise of the Triad==

ROTT had many features later picked up by the BUILD engine: Bullet hole marks in walls, destroyable objects (Tables, lights, etc), breakable glass, thumbnail pictures in the saved games, and adjustable, password-protected violence settings. It was the first "clone" that a had look up \ look down ability.

The engine could handle pretty big levels too: up to sixteen stories high and an area of one million sq. feet.

ROTT also had things the BUILD games didn't have like parallaxing skies, fog, boulders, real lights that illuminate walls (that you can shoot to make the room get darker), ricocheting bullets, touchplates, and gas grates. If you didn't have a gas mask, you were toast. It also had a 180 turn key.

ROTT was the first game that let you fall off ledges and die. If you weren't careful jumping around you could fly off the edge of a cliff. And of course, there where the famous jumpads. They where like mini-trampolines that hurtled you 5 stories in the air. Once in the air you could maneuver yourself around and do all sorts of weird stuff. Aerial battles often got pretty crazy. Jump pads were used to jump over obstacles, walls, other players, to get weapons and items… they're all over (and yes, enemies could use them).

Alright, so I got From the Ashes of Fear (https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/d-f/fear_ash).). Replaces maps 15, 31, and 32. So far, I only played map 15 and it's a pretty symmetrical, but nicely detailed techbase map. Lots of caged monsters and lost souls out in the courtyard section of the map. There's a cyberdemon encounter for the red key, and a spiderdemon encounter for the blue, but both are easily killed by infighting with the surrounding monsters. Not too bad, but nothing mindblowing either - 7/10.

Very flat and empty in the opening section. I think if you fall in the water in the beginning, you softlock. The combat was very dated, but it had some neat puzzles. One of the areas required you to navigate around teleport linedefs on the automap in order to lower pillars to get a key. I think I'll borrow that idea sometime for a map.

I got "Another Awsome DOOM PWAD" (https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom/a-c/aa21doom).). There were custom sounds, including a clip of the Knights of Ni from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Some interesting verticality for '94 with a maze with multiple elevations. One bullshit part with an inescapable lava pit (as far as I could tell) that cucks you with an elevator that doesn't rise high enough to escape. The final room had a fun but not special fight and I'm glad I played in Chocolate to see some tutti-fruttis. 2/5

Alright, on to map 31, which according to the author, reuses some areas from a one of his previous maps in the New DooM Community Project. As I mentioned earlier, it uses some of the Wolf 3D textures, but surprisingly no SS enemies. The map starts off immediately with a Spiderdemon encounter, but it's easily dispatched thanks in part to a bunch of imps and revenants on the cliff behind it. Aesthetically, the map is very nice and plays well, with some nasty archvile encounters down the line, but nothing too tough. Pretty solid map overall, I'll give it an 8/10.

I got an interesting one called "BOOM Stick in the Mud BOOM Edition"
It is a 2019 Boom conversion of one of the author's previous ZDoom levels. It starts off in a pitch black confined elevator that wants you to shoot your pistol for light which also serves as an alert for all the monsters above you. The author makes clever use of Boom's sector effects in order to make the level not seem to dissimilar from the ZDoom version. Such as fake water and slow movement to emulate deep mud that you are meant to wade through.

The Infected Tower, a single level from 2005. Very little detailing and the author likes to use blue floors instead of switches. A couple decent ambushes. Layout is pretty boring, it's basically a corridor until you pick up the yellow key when you're teleported to the next area, with all three key doors coming off the central room, each door containing a couple rooms and a sector that unlocks the next key or exit. Also there was one sector that didn't have a floor texture, not sure if that was a bug with my install or with the wad, but probably the wad... 2.5/10.

Map 32 wasn't as good as the other two maps in the wad. You start out having to kill 35 imps with a shotgun in a big circular room and go around Tricks and Traps style looking for keys and switches in the doors available to you. Every time you make progress in the map, more and more monsters pour into the central room, which you have to kill or else they'll flood into whatever room you're in and kill you. Most of my time spend in this map was circlestrafing until most of the monsters were dead. There was one section which was clearly inspired by The Factory's final room, except instead of cacodemons on lifts, it was mancubi. The map ends with a room filled with 4 cyberdemons, which I just dodged and ran for the exit. I'm gonna give this map a 4/10. As for the wad as a whole, I would rate it 6/10, it was pretty good despite the lackluster final map.

While thats true about their distinct attacks, thats part of the problem. If you're trying to melee juke and backup slightly too far, they just instant rocket you. Its an issue that no other enemy in the game really has, moreso because of how their projectile works than the actual monster itself.

The mitigation thing was mostly referring to when they get used poorly in traps. Stuff like the secret in map1 of BTSX1 isn't so bad because there are a ton of enemies you can use the missiles with to block the hits and force infighting, but then you have some of their uses in stuff like Ancient Aliens being specifically built around making it incredibly hard to do so while being in a trapped arena. While I really like Going Down, it also has some pretty bullshit uses of them in the opposite direction of giving the player near zero room to avoid them.

Buggy says itself, you used to be able to dust the Cyberdemon in 6 shells by aiming for his head with the SSG, because Mark accidentally made headshots do twice the damage he intended them to (which still makes 12 shells when fixed, which is dumb still, and illustrates why giving the top rank monsters really exploitable weaknesses like that isn't so great). You also have things like Mark accidentally, somehow writing every instance of 1.0 as I.0, as in upper case letter i point zero, which meant the mod didn't boot, and Graf just updated GzDoom to let that parse as 1.0 anyway so that Mark's fans would stop annoying him, under the condition also that Mark fix that shit right now, because he'd remove it next update. Mark took like half a year to address that, which could have been fixed in straight up a single minute.

It could be a lot better now, but that's still the kind of impressions that BD has given lots of people.

The studio didn't want John Carpenter casting an Asian man as the lead character, so he did some changes, and brought in Kurt Russel to play a new lead character, and they'd do it in a subversive way, by making this character, Jack Burton, a boisterous oaf who often bumbles his way into and through action and escapades like an idiot. They manage to actually do it in a very endearing way, as much as you'll laugh at Jack Burton and think "What an asshole." he's also kinda cool and charming.

It's a great action comedy, and Kurt Russel is a big part of why it works so well.

And just so I'm not quoting, ultimately I think Quake mods are more appealing because they're not beholden to needing a story, and already have an exciting cast of enemies to spice up gameplay. Half-Life's enemy variety is fine for the game and story Valve told, but you can't do tricky shit like ogres on high shooting down at you while some knights move in on you. If you mix and match an alien slave with an alien grunt, they're going to dish out a fuckton of damage, but it leaves no room for enjoyable dodging or navigating the enemies. Still, HL1 mods can be absolutely incredible. Sweet Half-Life for instance.

You can say what you will about rng in doom, you'll find people who both like and dislike it. Some mods even used fixed values for damage and it can feel very fitting, especially when used properly. That said, it didn't exist without reason: When you are in a first person perspective, it can be very difficult to tell how "damaging" a hit is: did it barelky graze your arm, or did it puncture your lung? that kind of variance is what the RNG of damage is supposed to reflect. Its not inherently a bad thing, and depending on your perspective, can be a lot better with than without.

You'll have to finagle with Slade. It's pretty simple. Slade is like pakexplorer, it lets you open .wads, .pk3s; files that have to do with Doom. Once you've opened Brutal Doom, navigate to where the chaingunner sprites are stored. You can see the path and everything here in pic related. Extract all the graphics related to the chaingunner (named Commando in BD's files), and then use Slade to open whatever wad you want, and replace those chaingunner graphics with these. I'm pretty layman at this, but the way I've done it with other files is making a note of what the filenames are for the originals, and then renaming the new ones I intend to replace them with with those exact names. What I mean is, when you replace the vanilla chaingunner, it probably won't be called MPOSF1, but you'll have to rename it to whatever equivalent is there.
