I was shying away from describing the opening because it was so long ago what i remember could be completely wrong, I didn't want to give any false leads.
What I could be (very)wrong in remembering was something along the lines of you being an investigator, you're at some spooky location, then your partner/friend whoever gets killed and the person responsible transforms into some kind of monster and you're forced to fight in that opening. I remembering it being a kind of active turn-based where time moves between charging up for your next turn, like FF.

Thanks again so much everyone, y'all have been giving me a lot more hope of finally finding it. If this pulls through I'll post a no commentary vid of me playing if there isn't much around of it already in case anyone is also curious.

Fuck, I thought I had it for sure with the Deception games. I doubt it's it but I at leadt think Hell Night is worth mentioning. No rpg combat but it has a modernish setting and is horror.

Okay, one last thing. I can't believe I didn't suggest it before but perhaps Galerians? Protagonist is a boy but looks pretty androgynous and while not an rpg the psychic powers you use have charge times attached to them.

I'll use this thread to look for an obscure game as well:

It was a 2d platformer with pixel graphics on a PC, that I played sometime in the 2000s

You chose one of the three dwarves/gnomes and went into a fantasy-ish world, doing your regular platforming stuff.

I remember it having interesting, offbeat music and visuals, and I think one of the gnomes was a wizard.

I was never able to find it or anything about it.

Pic unrelated, visuals were way more complex and the character sprite was much smaller

This was my first guess but nope. The game I played was complexly different

Graphics were more advanced. You only played as a single gnome at once. And the artstyle was very different - levels were very busy visually, but colors were subdued - a lot of yellows and browns and dark greens.

Art style and graphics looked a bit like Nox, which I played around the same time, actually

At this point I’m starting to think it was some shovelware, completely lost to the sands of time.

Shame though, the reason it stuck in my mind despite only playing it once as a kid is because it had this really odd atmosphere. Very whimsical but also weirdly melancholic and dark.

I was a kid some time in the mid/late 90's, auntie showed me dope PS1(pretty sure) game.

I don't remember a ton of details about the game, I remember you played as a female, at least at the beginning of the game. It was set in modern day, you are in a spooky setting and some big bad accosts you during the first combat encounter, the combat was turn-based. I think you had like a fucking lead pipe or some shit or a golf club as your only weapon. Supposed to lose first encounter i'm pretty sure.

When I was like probably 10 years old or less than that I remember my mom brought me to my auntie house to visit her I couldn't give a flying fuck and then I remember some dude playing this FPS game which kind of draw my attention so I just sat down watching him play.

I don't remember quite well but for what I can recall the game is a FPS with a PS1 graphical style in which the main protagonist is a ginger woman dress in black wielding a dual pistols which kind looks like two desert eagle pistols I don't fucking really know for sure it all I can remember.
