Why is the exploratory platform genre called "Metroidvania" instead of the more accurate "Willyvania"?

>> No.7083538

Why call them Metroidvania when most action adventure platformers owe their design to just Metroid?

>> No.7083540

Why is OP shown under the name "Anonymous" instead of "Faggot"?

Oh great, it's another completely organic Parish nonce thread.

Because Castlevania caused a revival as well as being originally present with Vampire Killer and Simon's Quest

Because no sane person thinks Jet Set Willy is an actual good game. This "Jeremy Parish" dude is just trying to act like he's found something interesting.

It's like everyone knows about Metroidvania genre so bringing that up won't give you gamer cred. But if you come up with something like "You know Jeremy Parish has been making an interesting point recently that Metroidvanias may more accurately be termed Willyvanias because blah blah blah all the tropes were there", it's meant to sound like you know something more than just the average plebs. Get it? It's all a pointless gimmick.

Not that I'm totally convinced this whole thing isn't a joke yet though.

They don't owe them to Metroid, they owe them to Jet Set Willy. Metroid was an important milestone in the Willyvania genre though.

why remove Metroid from the name and still use "vania" as if Symphony of the Night (or Simon's Quest) didn't release after Metroid? even Maze of Galious released after Metroid did.

Why not read the thread before posting? The first half represents the originator, the latter half represents the revival and peak.

Just call them platformers, there's no reason to tolerate these infantile gender-confused neologisms.

Mission Impossible was there first in any event.

Metroid is a great game many people played and loved as opposed to one few people played and virtually no one loved.

It's a little like why we don't have beneathapplemanorlikes, for example.

Yes, because if I want another game like Metroid, Sonic or Mario fit that bill excellently.

They are platform adventure games, or, if you want to distinguish them from the cinematic platformers, then action-adventure platformers, or even arpg platformers for the SOTN-likes.
