A shame Sonic X-Treme never came out, tho i doubt it would have saved the Saturn anyway, SEGA doomed the Saturn from the start unfortunately.
This game was ok desu, kind of a Collectathon, which isn't common in the Sonic franchise, so it feels fresh to play, i feel it gets more crap than it deserves desu.

This song is jammin we should remix it for another game

Enjoyed that game a lot honestly. I hadn’t gotten into PCs very seriously yet so the isometric view was novel.

thoughts on the 2D game

I think it's just too repetitive. It gets old fast. Which is a shame because I do really like the whole look and feel of the game. I think it's a collectathon in the truest sense of the word, in that all you really do is collect things. In Mario 64 for example, you're doing races, you're solving puzzles, you're doing escort quests with baby penguins, you're searching for hidden areas. If the game was just red coin hunts, people wouldn't like it nearly as much.

I agree with you there, this game is far from being a great, and nowhere neat the quality of SM64, playing too much of it in a single session can make it's problems really pop as well.

I admit that if it weren't for me having a lot of nostalgia for it, i wouldn't care much for this title, but i do have nostalgia for it, so i have my bias there.

I definitely recommend the DX hack version by Jon Burton, the original programmer for the game, it has a password save system (Tho i just used save states to save my progress instead), a menu/hub for selecting levels like SMW, tho simpler, and it has more stuff to do than the original. It's still not great, but it improves on the game exponentially.

Fucking garbage, but I still played it because my grandfather was kind enough to take me to Funcoland to buy it.

Awful. For some reason Sonic and the Game Gear just did not mix. Labyrinth, Blast, the fact that somehow Drift 1 never came stateside but drift 2 did for some reason. There were some good ones like Chaos, Tails Skypatrol, Triple Trouble, Master System Sonic 1, Sonic 2. All of them were overshadowed by the Genesis games though by far.

Sorry this isn't in response to your post, but I'm really interested in the image you posted. I never played Sonic Jam, is there more weird art like this that shows the transition from classic to dreamcast sonic, or is this fan-made or something? If there's more of this I drfinitely have to get Sonic Jam then because this stuff oozes soul.

No problem, my friend, no need to apologize :3

This image is one of the many wallpapers in the Sonic Jam disc, you can see more here: (http://info.sonicretro.org/Artwork_from_Sonic_Jam))

This particular one was drawn by Satoshi Okano, who also made the artwork for the japanese version of Sonic 3D Blast, which has a similar style to this one, tho i just think this one is his best.

Unfortunately there isn't much official art from SEGA that has this Classic+Modern Hybrid feel to them, i can only think of these one's i've mentioned, some concept art from Sonic Adventure, the original art for the cover of Sonic X-Treme, and Richard Elson's Sonic from the Fleetway comic.

I'm gonna post them all here, first, some more of Okano's art, from the japanese 3D Blast manual (1/4).

The original art for Sonic X-Treme cover, everything leads me to believe that the final version would've been a 3D render, and this was just used as a concept, but i find this much better.

Sonic Adventure concept art, the left drawing really has a transitional feel, i wish they went with this, just with the modern's green eyes, which i do really like. (3/4)

Richard Elson's Sonic, in the style he would draw him in during the Sonic Adventure arc of the Fleetway comic, just love those upwards spikes, and the somewhat classic proportions, but with the green eyes. (4/4)

Oh fuck I saw these images back then and I was astonished by bottom left and bottom right.
Pure soul.
Is there any game that would play keeping those aesthetics (lighting, colors, eerieness)?

I don't understand the hate about it. Just another 8 bit sonic, not much worse than Sonic 2 8 bit or Sonic & Tails. The engine seems to be the same. Blue Marine is the deepest hell though.

And Silver Castle music is great.

Thank God Sonic Xtreme never came out. What a shit concept. Sega should have cracked the whip and made Sonic Team so a 3D Sonic before they started dicking around with gay Nights and Burning Hemmorhoids.

The whole fisheye thing might have made an interesting 3rd party gimmick game, but it was a terrible idea for a mainline Sonic title.
3D Sonic should have been a sidescroller like Nights, the fact that it's the direction Sonic Team themselves took ought to tell you something.

>> No.7085175

Even if X-Treme had been a good game, which it wasn't, it still couldn't have saved the Saturn. I have no idea how SEGA struggled so much to bring sonic to the third dimension, when Nintendo was effortless able to do the same with Mario.
