Rise of the Triad is objectively the best, most fun and most unique FPS of the 1990s.

"B-BUT MUH DOOM"
>"If the market is so small as to only allow DOOM, then we might as well pack up and go home now. Besides, if you look at the list of features in RISE OF THE TRIAD, there's a lot in ROTT that can't be done in DOOM, period."

I don't fully agree with the claim, but it's strong contender for the best FPS of the first half of 90s.

Here are some early screenshots of the Rise of the Triad alpha when it was still a sequel to Wolfensteinl 3D. Here we see Hitler in a Triad armband and the title screen. Next Ill post charater and weapon sprites.

Cool contrarian take, and it's a neat game, mind you... but it's Wolfenstein on steroids which is both what's good and bad about it.
>90 degree angles only
>Quake-level commitment to one color; maroon
>boring enemies
The weapons, music, and silly shit like jump-pads and god/dog mode, level achievements, and drunk missile are soulful and all but the level design, enemies, and gun feel just aren't on the level of the boomer shooter big boys.

Have you played the game? It gets old by General Darian, let alone by the end of the game. I played through it all with the secret ending because I pove my '90s FPS, but it just isn't that fun. The soundtrack absolutely slaps, but the levels are ultimately too large, too abstract, and too repetitive to be very much fun or worth playing more than once if that. Some of this can be blamed on engine limitations, but at the end of the day it's just not that great of a game, weapon and player variety be damned.

The best 90's FPS is Doom 2, then Quake, then Duke3D.

What Tom Hall and his team achieved with the Wolf3D engine is highly impressive. It is more a bastard child to the engine it was changed so much. The finished product is by no means an engineering marvel but had a certain charm to it.

Here are some of the things that are in the ROTT engine:

Multi level orthogonally based levels.
Room over room (sort of).
Transparency.
Textured Floors and Ceilings.
Dynamic Lighting.
FLIC support (although we never had any in the game).
CINEMATIC engine (also never used. The ending sequence is scripted but doesn't utilize the cool shit developed before hand).
11 player network support.
Masked Walls (Textures with holes in them).
Moving Walls.
Stairs (sort of).

>> No.7081361

>>7081307
I appears if you use the level select cheat to access a level called "This Causes an Error". It literally does, as a column of moving blocks moves outside of the level boundary and makes it crash. When it does, this art of a block escaping the confines of the level is shown on screen.

As I said in another thread, it gets old bursting the same costume department actor and navigating the handful of basilica-like corridors. It kicks ass, but, let's not kid ourselves. I wouldn't even call it GOTY for 94.

Loaded it again today, on both my retro PC + CRT and Dosbox and man. It feels weird. The enemies are a tad too spongy against bullet weapons, feels laggy and not done any favors by its locked framerate. I know Doom's locked too but somehow this seems worse. The enemies also seem to react to damage slowly/unsatisfactorily. Mouse control is odd and a bit slow even at the highest settings.
