Ok /vr/ out of these 4 plus Yoshi's Island which was the best 2D mario platformer?

yoshi island obviously. a game made with heart
all the other ones are just shitty broken adventures. lot of warps and cheats and shit to break the challenge. never forget the day i played mario world "for the sake of trying my abilities"... and ended up reaching bowser fortress in mere 5-10 mins, like wtf, i just wanted to test my honest platforming sklls (yeah, that includes entering bonus levels a.k.a star world) , not to break the fucing game's challenge. the other games are not that different
to mario 2 is not even a real honest mario

yoshi island is the only heartful and honest adventure. plus lot of charm and kino soundtrack (instead of being shitty leitmotif re-used all over again)

Been replaying all of them recently, all of them fun as fuck, also SMB2J.
My vote goes to World, overall has the best controls and physics for me.
Yoshi's Island feels more like its own game, doesn't follow Mario rules closely despite being related, but likewise I consider YI to be on par with the main Mario games in quality

dont blame me for the game being fucking broken

i just wanted to test my max platform abilities. not a speedrun, just a sonic-like playthrough, but just one "playing around with danger", that meant, defying obstacles for fun's sake
logically that leads me to shortcuts
and star world
and bowser castle
in mere minutes

fucking shit. that means that if you're a pro at it, you'll just break the game
you end up in shortcuts and warp ship
who the fuck thought warps were a good idea anyway??? what is the fucking point?

the reward of bonus levels
are not points. are not extra lives. are not some cool and fun object that you'll carry in the adventure - nope, not at all, your reward are just blatant warps

For me personally, it's 3=SMW>YI>1>2US>2JP.
Many people argue over SMW being better than 3 and vice versa but if you ask me both have their strengths and weaknesses. Power-ups go to Mario 3 by far for the variety though cape feather definitely edges out tanooki leaf in terms of versatility and amount of fun to use, at least for me. Level design and control go to world for me just because it's what I'm most familiar with. Challenge though goes to Mario 3. I like a game that can put up a bit of a fight and Mario 3 definitely scratches that itch for me. Certainly doesn't scratch it as hard as something like Ninja Gaiden or Castlevania does, but it's satisfying nonetheless. The secrets are a toss up in my eyes. I love the warp whistles and other special items you can get in Mario 3 just as much as I love Star Road and the Special World. Yoshi's Island is great. Lots of charm in its art style and the level variety is very fun. The transformations keep the gameplay unique and the levels memorable and I enjoyed all of the new enemies it brought to the table as well as the boss battles with Naval Piranha being a personal favorite simply because I love Piranha Plant variations like Lava Piranha from Paper Mario and Megasmilax from SMRPG. Nothing tops Petey for me though. Mario 1's in the middle partially from respect of the legacy and partially because it's a quality game. The innovations it made are commendable and the game is very fun, but compared to later entries it's kinda weak, though I can't really knock it for that since it's literally the first entry. As a foundation for the rest of the series to be built on, it's rock fucking solid. Excellent game.

Cont.
Mario 2 US is fun to me, but not terribly interesting. It's a good game, no doubt about it, but for me it's a bit too much of a departure from the norm. Great game, but not too mario-like. Mario 2 JP is the only game I don't like a whole lot. I can appreciate it the same way I can appreciate a carefully crafted troll game. The traps are quite clever with how they abuse your knowledge and expectations from Mario 1 and outsmarting the game feels good, but it's just too hard for me. You can sace state, but if little Japanese kids from the 80s can do it the a grown man in current year w/ the internet can too.

I feel 1,2,3 and Super Mario World are all amazing and find it hard to rate one as best. But if I had to rank them it would go 3 > 2 > 1 > SMW

Yoshis Island shouldn't be mentioned with these great games. Everyone praising it are only exposing themselves as Zoomers.

>> No.7073458

>>7072735
SMW because it is pretty much an improved version of SMB3, the issue with smb3 is the saving, because it didn't have battery save it forced them to do certain things. If you play the first 3 on all stars it just doesn't feel right with the saving, makes it too easy.

With Yossy's Island you could make the argument that its not really a platform game, more like a puzzle game and a bit of shooter. I haven't finished it so I don't know if its better but it has really nice bosses and those giant creatures look really nice.

It has a mad final battle. But I agree with you that it shouldn't be categorized with the other Marios. It's not a very good platformer overall.

Kids like that stuff because they want the novelty of playing something once and then ignoring it for ten years.
