In the West: Multiple factors (E3 1995, the 32X killed a lot of consumer trust, a lot of Japanese games wouldn't get a Western release, etc).
In Japan: Final Fantasy VII. The Saturn was actually outselling the PSX before FF7 was released.

>> No.7071114

N64 and Saturn together make for a better lineup of games than PS1 if you can read moon.
Superior 3D and superior 2D.
>haha you need 2 of you to kill me!
Sure, think of it as Goku and Piccolo vs Raditz. Raditz might have been technically stronger, but very useless when 2 old rivals combine force.

>>7071114
Not quite the case, but it was basically this way with N64/PC for me. I only had a PC, but all my friends had N64s. So I'd get the best 4 player 3d action on N64 with friends (dial up multiplayer SUCKED for fps games on PC) and the best 2d RPGs and Strategy games on PC.

>Never the console
>Never drew a dime
>Never had a good game outside Japan or that utilizes 3D capabilities
>Tanked the buyrate of Dreamcast so hard it caused Sega to stop making consoles
>Difficult to develop or emulate due to complicated architecture and use of quads
>Only the 3rd best-selling 5th generation console worldwide
>Only the 3rd best when it comes to 3D rendering performance
>Jannetty to PlayStation even later on in Japan
>Launch Daytona USA port so badly optimized Sega Rally guys had to code a better port
>Sonic game development shafted so badly that FIVE Genesis Sonic games have to be ported
>High reliance on arcade ports
>Every decent first-party Saturn game with international release had a PC port, further questioning relevance of Saturn
>Online services used by nobody
>Porn games literally allowed in Japan in pitiful attempt to get salarymen dimes, causing a ROM site to list a stripping game the most downloaded Saturn game at one point
>Existence pretty much erased from Sega's official history books outside Japan as a result of tanking Sega's console chances

Good. Nintendo 64 had almost zero.
>Never had a good game outside Japan or that utilizes 3D capabilities
Another shame. I thought Saturn looked decent, especially my copies of Virtua Cop, Sega Rally, Panzer Dragoon etc

I was just joking around. Playstation was so shit at 2d. Although I still enjoyed it despite being severely flawed and missing the true 2v2 feature of Xmen.

Pretty much everything. Consumer-division SEGA were not ready for the advent of 3D gaming and got fucked by Sony's superior hardware.

>> No.7071508

>>7071484
Not really the case. Yes, 3d graphics on the Saturn are hideous, but they are on the Playstation too. All it boils down to is Playstation was cheaper, had more games, and multiplatform games ran generally better on it.

>> No.7071514

Wasn't it because Sega decided to lean hard into 2D instead of 3D? And Sega of America had that cocksucker who didn't want to bring games to the West UNLESS they were 3D?

>> No.7071517

>>7071514
No. The Sega Saturn was 100 dollars more than the Playstation and had a garbage game library.

>> No.7071559

It cost a lot to make. Sega wasn't a megacorp that could sell at a loss. It is the same reason Nintendo's consoles have drawbacks that seem pointless, like the low clock speed on the SNES and lack of texture memory on the N64. Except that Nintendo was able to sell the N64 for cheap and had killer first party games, so it was able to compete the Playstation despite Sony's huge headstart. Sega was more expensive and their first party games were either weird experimental Japanese titles or American shovelware. Nothing in between.

>> No.7071584

Honestly based on my experience of having lived through that era I don't think I ever even heard about the Saturn. I knew of the Genesis. I knew of the Playstation that had just came out, and had played it multiple times at demo units in stores (but I was a "wait for N64" Nintendie), but I didn't hear about the Saturn until the PS2 was already out.

They had no choice. Two admittedly good processors working in tandem over work RAM that was separated as 1MB synchronous and 1MB asynchronous banks. A video subsystem that had two separate processors each with their own RAM buses and two 256k front and back buffer chips which resulted in unused/wasted space. An overbuilt and underused sound subsystem and an overbuilt and underused CD management subsystem.

Sony had to make guesses as to what would be required from next-gen, three-dimensional games and executed it near perfectly in hardware. It was cheaper to produce and gave developers the most bang for their buck when creating games.

Nintendo's and Sega's offerings had certain aspects that were better than the competition, but on the whole fell short as an integrated unit. The Saturn launched for $100 more and they were probably still losing more money on every console sold than Sony. There was no way for Sega to win the generation, let alone carve out a niche and remain profitable.

>> No.7071604

Sega of America fucked up massively with the surprise early launch, which pissed off game devs whose games weren't ready yet, and pissed off retailers who weren't ready to sell it yet. I believe KB Toys actually got rid of all their Sega merch and started selling Nintendo stuff instead.

....and yeah, PS1 being announced at a cheaper price point didn't help.

Not much, really. The Sega Saturn is by far my most favorite Sega system. It came at the right time in a situation where everyone wants PlayStation titles, such that all the Saturn games were in bargain bins, which helps out destitute gamers like myself. With the cheap bargains, it allowed me to play a lot of great games, and to this day the Saturn has the 2nd most titles I have for any console dwarfed only by the 360 and all its downloaded titles. As much hate Sega and Sega games gets on this board, I find their games on the system suits my taste in games well.

Yes.
It uses polygons for its models and not true sprites. And its true for every "2D"-game on PSX.
