Also at least Diamonds wasn’t indirectly responsible for fucking up the rest of the 007 films, just a small blemish. Live and Let Die would come out later and be a well loved classic to this day. The magic is in how raw it is. You have full control over jumping or grabbing. No automatic scripts like in many other games. Plus amazing atmosphere of being alone in newly discovered ruins, knowing there's none else to help you and you have to figure it out. TR2/4 ruined this.

I hated Tomb Raider II compared to the first game. You went from actually raiding tombs in these long, atmospheric areas with an incredible sense of isolation to jumping around in a city or an oil rig. Lara kills 4 people in the original game, and only because she is forced to. In TRII she is a psychopath who literally kills hundreds of people over the course of the game. They fucked up the combat by stuffing every level with a million guys with hitscanning guns, and the shift from only being able to save at save crystal spots vs being able to save anywhere (while very nice) meant that they crammed in a bunch of instant-death traps into each level.

I liked the idea of a dagger that turns you into a dragon if you stab yourself in the heart though, plus pic related is a fun cutscene.

I guess TR2 feels like more of a James Bond movie than an Indiana Jones one. Which is pretty appropriate, given that Lara is a weird mix of both. There is a certain charm to it, but IMO they have really overdone the combat in that game.
As for her being a sociopath - those guys ARE the criminals and thugs on the payroll of a mafia don that are trying to get you killed.
Also the plot is really straightforward and extremaly convoluted at the same time.

She also has that Byronic daredevil thing going, similarly to Bond. She's a good guy, but she's not exactly *nice*. Also, British nobility. I still enjoy the 1996 original the most. While technologically the least perfect and most outdated, I still enjoy its story the most, and the levels manage a magnificent atmosphere. Just you, alone against the odds in locations where no man has set foot on for hundreds of years. ALL the sequels completely missed this point later.

It's a great piece of nostalgia, and I also appreciate what they were able to do with the limited hardware of the period. And at 17, I was the perfect age to experience it all. Lara was the perfect rough waifu.

The amount of effort and details to these riddles, tasks and puzzles is incredible. Probably the best in whole series. Seriously.

Visually it's dated agree but holy damn gameplay, storyline and such details like using ancient planetary system still holds up.

I got stuck in a room for no reason and saved where I could not get out of it. So I dropped tomb raider after first trying to go back and play the original and none of the iso's nor bin/cue played on epsxe, so fuck it. Black screen'd.
When the pc game ending error's you and the psx won't even have compatibility then it's probably nigger lippin' shit that real nerds that made emulators and actually liked games (and not for their fan service) didn't like enough to make good enough for me.

I owned a Tomb Raider, don't know which as I probably trashed it, and it was stuck in a room. that's just bad game design or a glitch or a scratch, scratches are worse than iso files me thinks. oddly though the orignal tomb raider has like 10ish bin files. They had to push multiple patches on both the PSX and PC to address game-breaking bugs that could completely torpedo progress on your current save file.
