Been digging into alot of obscure retro FPS after the anon posted a list of every FPS released in the 90s by year in the thread before last. Today I checked out Liquidator 3D, a Russian Build Engine game I never knew about. That's why I love old school shooters, there is always new stuff to discover.

I know there are a lot of Russian and Eastern European anons in this thread who may have played it back in the day. For those or anyone else who had played it, thoughts?

The music is actually really good:

Reposting from previous thread. I made one of two possible options for MAP29 in a community project. Will have to decide whenever to go with it or another submission. This is the probably final version, with difficulty flags:

Boom format, tested in PrBoom+ 29th slot. Would really appreciate more feedback.

Now it reminds me, did you know that Blood had two Russian localizations?
First one was pretty straightforward, except for swapping cultists voice lines to gibberish in Ukrainian.
But the second one, oh boy, was known as "Lenin, First Blood" with minor custom textures, very off voice acting and a lot of bad jokes about communism, Russia, booze and so on. You were playing as Lenin, of course.
There is also very obscure Ukrainian localization which had surprisingly funny voice line replacements too.

At the start of October a few of us who made maps for 2048 units of /vr/ decided to make a project for NaNoWADMo, a Doomworld initiative to make a mapset in October.
We're a long way off the megawad we hoped to achieve but we've released a demo of what we have while we keep going to the end of the year.
So, here it is: the October demo of Temporal Tantrum!
The demons have stolen a time machine from UAC and are attacking humanity at different points in time and space.
The demo consists of eight maps. Difficulties range from easy to very hard but be warned, the last three maps are much harder than the first five.
This demo is MBF-compatible, uses the Doom II IWAD, and was tested in PrBoom, complevel 11. It adds four new enemies (melee revenant, evil marine, astral cacodemon and diabolist) as well as modifying the Spider Mastermind.
As this is a demo and is early in development, only some maps have difficulty levels implemented. This is specified in the readme.

basically, the game is only worth playing if you enjoy the art and music.

the take-away from this is that Mcgee is both a bad game designer, and a filthy fucking save-scummer, because there's no way you can do any of these levels or bosses in a single segment.
(can't believe they gave him a damn sequel.)

If this is the final version then why do you want feedback? I Played your map last thread, If you want feedback, you have to actually ask for it.
I appreciate the thinning and spacing out of the archviles since last time it felt like spam and I especially appreciate making the bfg secret easier to hit. I think all the changes you made from last version are for the better, except that 7 cacos failed to teleport in this time.
Aesthetics wise, I think the textures change too often for such a small map, making it look incongruous. It could use a stronger visual theme to pull it together. The various phased lights looked good however, and all the voodoo magic tricks were neat.
This map is pretty difficult, which is usually what people want from a penultimate level, just be aware. I wasn't able to beat the ending battle without using the invulnerability secret on UV.

I've played Heretic 2 (quake 2 engine) and I saw some transparent root and vine (fence) textures I would like to use. I can extract the regular icons/sprites/textures from the game with SLADE just fine, but those fence textures I just can't find. How to extract textures from a .bsp2 format? Texmex kicks the bucket with a memory error.

I've seen some root textures in Arcane Dimensions and Unreal, but what are some others? Stuff that would go well with an abandonded temple?

If you are Quick enough you can kill one vile with rockets and get a lot of breathing room. Or pick up blue key and get invulnerability if you are into this sort of things.

The starting room is low on ammo but it's not terrible demanding. You don't need to kill revenants yet.

So, what I was up to all these months? I've been going through some important stuff in my life namely, I reinstalled Fallout:NV, so I was unable to work on my project. More importantly, I was thinking hard over the direction I should take the project in, and I've made some radical decisions - for one, I just couldn't find a way to make magic system work in current setting and context, so I scrapped it entirely along with inventory. I will keep the fantasy setting, though. Gameplay-wise I'm thinking about doing something similar to first-person Metal Slug (which, as I realized, would have certain similarities to RoTT) - you will have infinite-ammo sidearm, grenades, and you will be able to carry up to three heavy weapons such as HEAVEE MASHEEN GUNS and RAWKIT LAWNCHAIRS. Enemies will be a mix of vehicles and fodder infantry - no hitscanners, though. Right now, the big question is how do I approach level design - making a linear run-and-gun levels is an obvious solution, but I want to avoid it. Since I already have some enemies, as soon as I make some more guns, I will start experimenting with level design to produce a gameplay prototype.

Sweet.
>what are you attempting, with the leaks? why can't you use a regular texture or sky instead?
There's an arena, and to provide the illusion of an enormous void, I am giving the four walls and the ceiling a void skybox. But I don't want to make the arena itself very large, so my goal here is to make a small gap between each of the four walls and the floor the player is on with this skip textured floor. What I wanted to do was make the player fall through it, but that's not possible without foregoing vising. So instead I'll make the floor a teleporter and do something else instead.

yeah, I still don't get it. it's not a given at all that a particular engine will draw sky behind skip - it might draw nothing, or HOM, or who knows what.
again, why not texture the bounds with sky? you can make it as large or small as you want, it will look seamless.

Well it didn't draw anything, that's true. I need to rethink how to do this.
>why not texture the bounds with sky? you can make it as large or small as you want, it will look seamless.
The arena isn't very large, and the player will be using most of it. If they run into the sky, and the sky is a wall, it sort of ruins the façade. Thanks for the suggestions, and definitely thanks for helping me with axe starts.

I think it is somewhat neat, a lot of the enemies and items have some odd quirk about them.
The level design, other than being somewhat confusing, can get really annoying at times. For example, the first level require you to find a key in a secret room, and another level has a door permanently closed behind you upon walking over a non-obvious trigger, thus soft-locking the game.
Still, Liquidator is one of the more interesting Duke3D TC's I've played.

Here's sprites he made for an Algimec, which is an obscure and completely generic 9mm carbine of pretty much zero note, but it happens to look vaguely like the non-descript rifle that you see Doomguy and the Zombiemen carry, and looks Doomy in its overall aesthetic. Personally I couldn't shoot a shotgun shot at a flying target from 40 feet away as of yet, but I'm good with my hands. I find it alot more enjoyable to NOT have to do so, but there are times when you must strike Lavos at the core, or take out a cosmic horror with The Power of Prayer, or pop a spider cyborg final boss with a bunch of guns.

>Ray Tracing
Let's throw away that term. It does not matter in that context here.
BUILD is indeed a raycaster. Its data structure however is not using BSP, unlike Doom. It uses a portal rendering system. That allows for moving sectors at runtime, in the form of swing doors, rotating sector constructs, vehicles ect.

Note that the rendering loop renders a frame via vertical slices in screen space. When done, it swaps buffers and continues that process.

The only thing "impossible" is naturally accessing MAP32, because the MAP31 secret exit is on the P2/P4 side of the map (players in co-op are paired off and play entirely separate areas before meeting up). You can actually use a glitch to get to the P2 side without noclip though.
The only time I got actually fucked over by MM1's co-op focus was MAP04, because the super shotgun is locked behind a secret requiring two players, and the end of the level makes you fight a baron in an extremely small corridor with the entrance sealed off, it's basically impossible to deal with him and I had to savescum to beat him without cheating. Just noclip and grab the SSG on MAP04, trust me

Hey everyone, I wanted to update you guys on the current status of 500ml. Progress is steady but a November 10th release date is unrealistic,
that was a bad call on my part. Two of the maps are entirely finished with more in progress, so this project is far from abandon ware.

Everything in MAPEDIT is considerably slower compared to modern tools such as doom builder, that's why we need some more time to polish everything up and make something cool.

Honestly, I think the only reason that it's there is because Dario/Milo thought it was a cool mapping trick to show off at the time, and figured that was as good a place as any to cram it in.
It's better demonstrated (and conveyed) in map 04, I always thought it was too ambiguous and unclear in terms of progression.

Why it took Carmack three Quakes to get slopes right? In Q1 you slowly slide off if surface isn't strictly horizontal, in Q2 you can stand still on a terrain but going downhill makes you hop a little. Only in Q3 physics became adequate. He didn't care that much about anything besides rendering, did he?

>> No.7069565

>>7069524
Carmack tends to only care about one very specific thing at a moment. When making Wolf3D, game designers had to literally beg him to implement pushwalls so they could make secrets in levels, because he didn't saw how it was relevant to his goal of making the absolutely fastest-running first-person game on the market. Doom 3 was all about lighting, everything less was secondary to that. He haven't bothered implementing skeletal animation in Quake 3 even though it was becoming industry standard at this point - shaders and NURBS were more important to him

first thing first, there wont be a crispy version of the engine the dev is sticking with choco, but it will use the crispy version for a 640x400 resolution,
Next on the list of things i havent told is that in the game you play as 3 furry protagonists, a wolf (the warrior), a deer (a Wizard/lich and also the perfect gal for slaughterwads) and crow/raven(which is a rogue and a potion seller), they have their own mechanics but it's way to early to explain each, but i do know there is going to be 20 weapons.

The gunplay isn't excellent, but the swordplay feels really good, also the enemy roster has this nice variety where different ones fill different roles an do different things, rather than shitloads of generic reskins that almost never do anything special like in Shadow Warrior 2.
Level design is so-so, it's acceptable, but could be better. Shadow Warrior 2's level design is straight up fucking unacceptable and someone should have been caned for it.

RE2 is definitely WAYYYY more action than 1. Hell, after the first also not too hard stint in the beginning of the police station, you're basically swimming in shotgun shells. So put RE2 further towards action and RE3 further towards horror so they share a bar, and make RE4 further towards action.
And for me personally, Manhunt was never that "horror", but it's also not an action game like the other action games, it was more of a stealth anyway, so I would probably even take it out of this list.

Unless you want to make REALLY sure that the player hears the exact soundfont you want, I see little point in recording a .midi as an .mp3 to add to a GzDoom mapset.
Like, I'd do that if I wanted the music in my map to sound EXACTLY like it does in the NES game I took the music from, but otherwise, just do it as a .midi/.mus file, GzDoom will play it, and there's options for using stuff like SC55 with it if you want.

FWIW, I went into the game with absolutely zero expectations, first impressions was that I thought of the new Lo Wang as a contemptible dork, and I mocked him every time he spoke, but the gameplay was really fun, and I grew to like what a dumb nerd he was because the game acknowledges it and makes fun of him for it.
SW2 tries to do that, sort of, but doesn't really understand how and why it worked the 'first' time, and also tries to have its new and annoying support character to act as Lo Wang's "conscience", which I think is an extremely misplaced idea (considering the previous support character is kind of a selfish dirtbag, like Lo Wang is also supposed to be).

I'm hoping that in the future, aside from SW2 being retconned, that they get past that stage and develop him into the older, more hard-ass and cruel bearded warlord from the original game, not a villain, but kind of an anti-hero. Just maybe without the ridiculously thick fake accent.
