Either Fatal Fury Special or Real Bout Special, but FF2 or Real Bout 2 work for runner ups depending on your taste or certain character nerfs.
Garou is fine, it doesn't "trigger" me, it's just not a game I'd say is the best Fatal Fury, when in fact it's missing the one characteristic mechanic of Fatal Fury. It looks pretty and plays smooth, it's a good game, but not the best.

Wrong. FF has a lot of fans around the world, it's just that KOF took over in popularity in Japan and they stopped making main FF games (outside of Garou, which I don't consider main), and anyway by that time, fighting games weren't popular anymore in the west (look at the SF3 thread).
Garou's popularity nowadays stems from zoomers who are wowed by the high frame animations of the sprites in both Garou and SF3 (and in the case of SF3, the daigo parry video helped a lot), but back in the day they were only played by fighting game fans who were definitely already fans of Fatal Fury. The "only spics like SNK" meme comes from the fact arcades kept being popular in latin america and by the late 90s and 00s, KOF was one of the most famous series, but this wasn't just in Mexico, it was in Japan too (obviously), and again, actual fighting games fans around the world were still playing them too, just not massively because the genre was dead until SF IV.

Yeah I know a lot of people don't like that, but that is THE definitive trademark thing of FF, so I guess it's up to taste. I personally like it, and don't see it as breaking the game's pace, in fact I think it can lead up to more gameplay options for evading or even continuing combos. Real Bout definitely did the switching the best because it's faster and swifter but FFS is actually my personal favorite. It feels like SF II but with an extra layer of depth and more interesting movesets.

I don't remember people outright bashing Fightcade. As for people bashing SF3, this is post-war /vr/, every single game will get shitposted, it's just how it is. But yes if you want to actually meet people and play on fightcade, an anonymous board is not the place. There's really not much to discuss other than "read the wiki and practice" when it comes to competitive play, and then yeah, play against other people as much as you can, which also I don't think it warrants discussion, everything that needs to be said is seen on the screen. When people take it like a sport the players become sort of celebs so most of the discussion goes to them as people or who got "rekt" by who and stuff like that, mostly non-game discussion.
/vr/ is the place to discuss about the history of the game, post art, talk about lore and maybe some mild discussion about preferences on characters or installments in series and give superficial but mostly legit reasons. And that's fine I think.

I love the game. It triggers tryhards who obsess over KOF 97 et all because they made drastic changes to the roster and it ended up being the best one. I honestly do not think the people who make these bullshit claims have ever played the earlier games. You can spam a 3 hit combo for nearly every character against the AI that will let you perfect every opponent even on the hardest difficulty. In most of the KOFs even a fireball will take out a huge chunk of an opponent's life.

Yes it has terrible mechanics. I mentioned only two of them--the far overpowered throws and spamming specials moves/basic three hit combos. Those spams work fine on players too, maybe you never played against someone to know that. If you want to go to a third shit game mechanic, there is of course the changing planes mechanic which is utter garbage.

Hey man, I set my watch by the OGG Metal Gear threads. And it's always great to hear about how Genesis wasn't an RPG centered system. This place is more useful than you let on.

Garou has to be the most balanced fighting game I've ever played; the "overpowered" combos in it are nearly always setups and Just Defend feels more natural than parrying (and you can fuck it up way worse since if you just spam back you'll end up backdashing which can kill you). IIRC the only balance issue is Tizocs being useless because the opponent can force his throws to whiff with a game bug.

Yeah, Garou in Survival mode is extremely fucking fun, I think I played it in that mode way more than in Arcade. It also makes the AI have normal healthbars even on max difficulty (in Arcade, they have more health), and you have to beat every single character not just half the cast.

And if you play the console versions (not the MVS where survival is a cheat code), you can also pick smaller TOP bars, 1/3rd (normal setting) gives you 1.25x damage boost, 1/6th gives 1.5x and 1/12th gives 1.75x at which point a landing a P-power super does like 80% damage. In survival mode you can get your health refilled to max easily, so you can abuse the mega damage combos a lot.

Only real problem I have with the game is that since it maxed the Neogeo hardware out so much, it has a ton of slowdown which actually screws up the timing of many moves. I can only do the Neo Deadly Rave on Freemans and Gatos level which have less slowdown due to less background animations/layers.

That's only because MvC2 is a MUGEN tier trash where Capcom literally just threw in every sprite they had and didn't give zero fucks about balancing. Not that they are any good at it to begin with.

Also most fighting games are plagued by stupid long-ass juggle combos because that's what makes the players enjoy it, but it also fucked up tourney gameplay because you just have to kite for minutes until one player lands a jab and follows it up with a 95% combo. I think the only fighting game actually exempt from that bullshit is Virtua Fighter 2.

No one is forcing you to play in a tourney. Even then MvC2 fans will host events where they ban the god tier characters and allow people to only use characters from different tiers.

High level play is fun to watch and strive to achieve. It creates a goal with things you can work on and when done with friends it's extremely satisfying to see how much both you and other people have grown since picking up a game.

I'm absolute shit at the games I play but I still attend some nationals. No one is really going there for the money, winning like $250 is nice but it's hardly a reason to invest thousands of hours into the game. It's the thrill of being with other people who are as passionate about a game as you are.

It only feels like a job to you though, not to everyone who plays. Also there's a lot in between top level tournament play and only playing single player for the atmosphere or whatever. That's why to me online is so great. But I personally hate playing against AI, that's what feels like a boring chore and I'll only ever do it if necessary to unlock something. Otherwise I only want to fight other players.
