Japanese people don't understand good game design. They are like robots. For Japanese people, their idea of "cool" is following nonsense melodrama stories and doing stupid mini-games. For a Westerner, good games are focused around freedom and have an edge of wittiness to them. If you compare Shenmue to the appeal that GTA III has, the difference is night and day. You can see this same kind of philosophy quite easily if you are comparing Japanese and Western RPGs, where they inevitably always fall in line with dumb story with bare-bones mechanics Vs. freedom and innovation. And don't try and tell me that this game was so revolutionary for the time. No, it wasn't. For starters, you can see better open worlds in Fallout or Ultima.

GTA III isn't even half as good as Shenmue. It feels fun at first and then quickly becomes tedious. It has no heart. The series' soundtracks account for almost all of its thin mostly-unlikable personality

Used to bee a good tech demo and today they make money with shenmue, because idiots feel nostalgic.

I wanted to play Shenmue so bad when I was a kid. I was very disappointed after I played Shenmue 1 and 2 on PS4...

i don't understand why does it have to be such an issue and point of contention regarding linear and open world design. both are fine, i don't play fucking NES mario and think it would be improved by letting me talk with a goomba in a dense dialogue and convince him to commit sudoku then backtrack to his house and convince his wife i'm his creditor and he needs to pay up
and really the only reason this always comes up with shenmue is that they decided to market it as open world, but really that's stretching the definition of the term near the breaking point
you can definitely set your own pace of playing and slow down and do a lot of side stuff but the areas of play are all so tiny and not really branching at all that you're just really stretching it, and you hardly have any liberty to traverse anything, the game locks and unlocks you in various regions as you traverse through the narrative, you don't really have a choice to free roam between all these areas.
but the bottom line is, who cares, it's a good semi-linear, semi-open game, call it whatever you want but it's just a fun exploration/detective game. if you controller the character with a mouse it would fit the point and click genre like a glove
the game isn't trying to be fallout or baldur's gate, it's such a pointless point of comparison

Good game, slow burn, not for everyone. It was more of a walking simulator, which nobody today really gets. The idea was that you could walk around and discover every little thing and talk to every character, which is a big part of hunting for clues. It was more of a visual spectacle, which doesn't hold up to modern games. Zoomers don't get why you would just want to hang out around a city and check out everything. They are probably secretly happy COVID happened so they don't have to go outside.

I'm replaying Shenme 1 and 2 on the Steam re-release and... holy shit, did these games age badly. Don't get me wrong, I loved them and I still do, but there are some glaring gameplay, and interface elements that not only aged badly, but also one wonders how they were acceptable on their day to begin with.
Walking, for example, is the most obnoxious thing, I can't comrpehend how in the age when analog controls were getting popular, we get some pseudo-tank controls with the d-pad that makes turning around or opening a door absurdly tedious. Talking is really annoying too, those long pauses, or even those conversations that stop in the middle for no real reason and you have to "talk" again to go on...
What about in Shenmue 2, when you enter Xiuying's after 7PM and you automatically get that cross menu with the option to sleep and save with no promt? I go that while pressing up because I was... moving forward. Wanted to save? tough luck, now you have to do the entire dumb book pile minigame before you are able to save again. And this goes for every time the game decides to lock you out of exploration with no reason by doing unexpected time skips or Ryo deciding to do the next thing by his "own will". Most glaring example is the last day of Shenmue 1, where a lot of shit happens, you barely have any chance to do anything else inbetween, and at the end Ryo decides to take the ship to Hong Kong. Guess this is the game's concept of immersion, since you really have no choice to wait there, you're supposedly in a hurry.

I think about how these games were the most expensive to be produced when they were released, and I wonder where did all that money go. The content is very lacking, especially in Shenmue 1, the entire game takes place in Ryo's house, three fucking streets and a harbor. I guess it was more important to model a hundred shops that are completely irrelevant, or to make every single NPC have voice acted lines giving you directions to every relevant place in the story.
Not to mention the obscure shit you have to do to get some of the cool stuff, which also happens to be permanently missable. For example in Fangmei's birthday side story, I've been following a guide to do it properly but now I'm in spot where I have to wait a fucking month for her birthday. What should I do? Do the chawan sign every day to make time go faster? spend like 30+ hours doing anything but progressing in the story?
And don't even talk about fighting, for a game that's supposedly about fighting, you actually fight too little, you spend most of the time practicing in empty parks or sparring with friends. Yakuza improved this by letting you fight every now and then with random mooks, and getting money and experience in the process.
Worst of all, is how Shenmue 3, a game released almost 20 years later, not only didn't improve any of this, but somehow made it even worse. My only hope as of now is that Sega regains confidence in the projects and lets RGG studio work on the series, and while we're at that, remake 1, 2 and 3.
