Why is there literally no one playing deathmatch anymore?

So, I've been thinking about making simple "theme" monster packs that could fit certain mapsets or weapon mods better. One idea I have would be fantasy/demon monster pack, where every "technological" enemy is replaced by non-technological one - I could take sprites from Heretic/Hexen, another would be an opposite - non-monster monster pack, which replaces every demon with technological or human enemy something like Mutiny except not trash. You think this would be a good idea?

A universal monsters pack for Doom is something I've thought of a lot, but I lack the artistic skills. Quake has something like that with the mod/mapping toolbox Quoth, and many Quoth monsters have been grandfathered into many different maps and mods and have become staples of Quake. Go for it, but if I may, include some techy demon variants too.

>> No.7034348

>>7034314
>I don't understand your question.
Basically what I'm asking here if there is a way to make a mod that is compatible with all games. In other words... something that checks if (actor) exists. And if it does, use it. If not... use (actor B). So it can work in Doom 2 (if its correspondent actor exists) -and- in Hexen (if the doom actor is not found but the hexen specified one exists.)

>> No.7034357

>>7034348
So you have a monster that replaces another monster depending on the game, did I understand that correctly? So e.g. the Imp in Doom 2 and the Ettin in Hexen?

You could do that with a ZScript replace script, but I don't think there's a way in decorate apart from having several monster blocks that all replace a different monster.

>> No.7034375

>>7034357
>did I understand that correctly?
Yes, you understood it right.
>You could do that with a ZScript replace script
Then I'm screwed because I don't know jack about ZScript. Welp, time to read the wiki for the next few hours.

>> No.7034384

>>7034375
Okay you need two files:

- A ZScript file, can be named "zscript" just for now for trying. In that file you write the following:

Class MonsterReplacer : EventHandler
{
override void CheckReplacement(ReplaceEvent e)
{
switch(e.Replacee.GetClassName())
{
case 'Zombieman':
e.Replacement = "MyMonster";
break;
case 'Ettin':
e.Replacement = "MyMonster";
break;
}
}
}

- A MapInfo file containing the name of the eventhandler like so:

GameInfo
{
Eventhandlers = "Monsterreplacer"
}

>> No.7034412

>>7034375
The Decorate method is just to name the actors that you're replacing to prevent redundancies. Easiest way is to make the replacement monster, then use lump filtering to make a decorate file relative to each IWAD, and just make a slightly renamed variant that just inherits the entire monster definition.

You can do it with a bit less work in ZScript, but if you're shooting for compatibility with anything other than new GZDoom then using ZS is going to kill that. Honestly I'm getting kind of tired of stuff being "depreciated" on the wiki like some big bad spooky curse, when the "correct" way just ends up being something that shoehorns people into needing to use the latest GZD. Half the time there isn't even anything wrong with the old method.

Perhaps I should make my previous idea more clear and specific... and "code-y" like:
If Zombieman exists, use its actor. If not, ignore it and use Ettin, instead. If Ettin does not exist... etcetc.

Okay, I wanted to see what you are doing. While I still don't really understand your intentions, maybe that script isn't really for you.

What this script does is replacing an actor with another one, i.e.

case 'Zombieman' looks for all actors of class Zombieman. WHen it has found them,

e.Replacement = "Ettin";

replaces the Zombieman with the Ettin.

Also, I noticed that you have a typo in your code. In line 5 it's

Replacee with two 'e', not one. Did you not just copypaste the code I posted? Because that one works as intended (with different replacements, of course).

If there is no Zombieman on the map, you won't get an Ettin. If you just want to add monsters to a map, you can use a spawn function that spawns monsters at coordinates at level load.

> If there is no Zombieman on the map, you won't get an Ettin.
Yes, I understood it clearly. And what I'm asking here is to force the game to inherit from Ettin instead of Zombieman when I'm playing Hexen. Ergo, "Shit! Zombieman does not exist on this game. But instead, I'll inherit from Ettin instead because it does exist in this game."

I'll make it simple with an example:

Just use the decorate filter method so it loads a different decorate file dependent on which Iwad you're loading, or look up how mods like critical shots handle checks for actor classes. Either method will accomplish what you want, I think the other anon is getting frustrated because you're over-complicating things.
As far as the rest of the compatibility is concerned, you'll want any sprites for the mod itself to be truecolor to avoid palette issues between different Iwads, as well as making sure there are no naming overlaps with either sprites or actors.

Honestly, if he just wants it to be a universal "quirk" like the one he listed in his example, making said quirk an ACS script and just having each applicable actor call the script during a state before going right back to their "super::" inheritance would be the least amount of work. Nerves of Steel is utter trash, maybe the worst retro FPS period. I don't think it's got a single redeeming trait.
In Pursuit of Greed has awesome music by the legendary Andrew Sega and some cool concepts, but pretty shoddy execution. It's the sort of game that I'd love to see recreated in GZDoom.
CyClones is Raven, so it's unsurprisingly decent. Janky as hell though. Even past the System Shock-style controls (which I don't personally mind at all), the hitreg is absurdly fickle. I wish I weren't cursed with some unique hardware problem that causes my mouse buttons to get stuck at random only in this game. Between that and the hitreg, tons of ammo gets wasted.

Anyone here played Wrath of Earth? I just tried it out today and it's pretty neat, if primitive-looking for 1995. The way all your suit components can be damaged by enemy attacks is interesting, you can end up losing your HUD in the middle of a firefight.

No, making it so that every weapon has a chance to be a weapon from a different class' weapon set. The "remaster" is indeed worse. It's a recreation in a different engine and has many wrong physics, damage, effects, etc. BloodGDX and NBlood are free fanmade ports that are accurate to the point of playing back the original demos. The differences between the two are minor; GDX makes it easier to play custom content, while NBlood has faster multiplayer.

I mean, compared to what I am doing, that's rather simple, as it's just a slowly going ship on water, so you just need to scroll everything past.
With a bullet train in a city there's more to it. I know the skyline is not ideal, but I would need to build a fully scrollable skybox over something like 6000 mu. But then again, this is still WIP, so when everything is laid out and the mod is feature complete, I can go and improve the maps. I can only ask you to bear with me, as I am just a single dude with a job, friends and gf, so I can't devote all my time to this.

Right now I am trying to find out how to implement scrolling pillars. Making a tunnel texture that's scrolling through seems kinda cheap and depending on the angle you can see that the pillars are only 2D. Can Polyobjects scroll down and back, so to say? I had the idea of using polyobjects that scroll along the train constantly.

Thoughts on the following WADs for survival? This is what I like off the top of my head, with a cut or two from last time. I'm taking suggestions but as host, the final call is mine. If I didn't plan on running so many mods with custom stuff going on, I'd have Smooth Doom on the server since I always play with it myself in SP. Too bad I know it breaks stuff in Ancient Aliens and Eviternity.

>AV
>Scythe 2 (first one's too easy for MP until the last few levels imo)
>Epic 2
>Eviternity
>CC4
>Hellbound (too sloggy even in MP, perhaps? bores me to tears in SP but I've had fun playing it on servers)
>Speed of Doom
>Unholy Realms (a little easier than many others on the list imo)
>Sunlust (the ballbuster)
>Ancient Aliens (too easy? probably comparable to Scythe 1 if you haven't played it)
>Valiant Vaccinated (too easy for the same reason as the above?)

One thing I've always liked that more servers should do is have players drop weapons when killed in survival. While I'm going to have non-mega pickups respawn, I still like the weapon drops for people that are leaving the game and want to drop a present for other players they're leaving behind.

>>7038412
Okay. I've played it in SP and MP. It's...fine either way for me, but with all the other choices, I'm okay with dropping it. The author's trap placement gets samey after a while if I recall. The alien ship levels are also frustrating. I may have unblock players on when the server goes up, but that won't make it any more fun, just less irritating. Gone.

I wish I could include some older stuff so it's not all modern popular stuff. If you have any suggestions for less known stuff that might be fun, I'm listening.

Right now, I think I need to set up a maplist for the server so one WAD goes to the next. As of now, my understanding is that failing to do that will result in a WAD's end resulting in either it looping back to the start of that WAD or loading Doom 2 MAP01, depending on what the WAD author did with MAP30's MAPINFO lump.

In terms of older WADs I've considered, the MM WADs and Requiem are fun but too easy for modern MP. HR1 is okay. The first third is rather easy. Then it gets mean. I'll take a hard pass on HR2. MAP32 is god-tier slaughter. The rest is trash. I played it with the DWMC earlier this year and I'm never touching it again. BTSX 1 and 2 are too easy for MP as well. I've played the latter on servers and really, multiple people are too much for it, mainly as a vanilla wad with all the monster limitations that implies.

Looking at the details of a lot of the WADs I'm interested in running for the Halloween party, all of them seem to use the vanilla Doom 2 level names. I don't think I can set up a map list the way I expected to. Instead, I'll have to run a wad, take down the server, and switch to the next wad. At least I can run Smooth Doom for wads where it's compatible.

IDK if it counts but D.O.G: Fight for your Life (also known as Dune Runner in some areas) from '97
It's a 3d person shooter with both on-foot and vehicular combat on a voxel terrain that can be deformed by explosions. Everything outside of voxel ground is sprites.
It is mission based, and each mission has different objectives, some times different from just combat - like destroy all trees or barrels on the level, reach the end in time, collect X amount of gold etc.
Each mission has an admission fee you have to pay to enter it (every time you enter it), and pay out if you win. You can't farm easy missions for money as you can only get the reward once. However you can skip the missions you don't like if you have the money to play other missions. You win the game after you beat every mission, or lose if you run out of money and can't pay to access any new mission anymore.

For some reason AE makers are really opposed to mipmapping and anisotropic filter, which when used right do not detract from texture sharpness at all.
This results in a horrible pixel mush in the distance that really ruins the details of the picture.
They rely on UE4s atrocious TAA to fix this, but it also blurs the mage in a very noticable way.
Sadly, there are no workaround this, but with it game actually looks pretty good, even if a bit blurry.
This is a curse of many indie games on UE4 as indie devs are too inept to try different rendering pipelines that does not rely on TAA.

Good point about the skillsaw WADs. I played Eviternity earlier this year during the runup to Eternal's release and got a good fight out of it. It's just been longer since I played AA and Valiant but what you're saying makes sense in light of what I recall from them. Bloodstain is well made but sloggy, so it might be fun in MP. I forgot about Resurgence, having not played it. I've only played about half of SoD but I loved it and want to finish it someday. I've played BTSX e1 on a lot of servers and find it too easy for MP. E2 may be the answer. Maybe. I haven't heard of the other two. Give me some time to look into them. I need to run the server sometime today to familiarize myself with how to admin in Doom, so that might be a good chance to load up a WAD I haven't played to see what I think.

On an unrelated note, is there something like line_horizon but for stacked sectors? I want to make a huge building with an atrium in the middle and to give the impression of incredible height I want to repeat level after level.

I got the server up for a test run and it went pretty well. Now I have some questions. First, judging from the Zandronum wiki, the server knows I'm an admin via my IP matching the one that created the server...I think. Is that correct for Sentinel's Playground servers so far as the thread knows? Second and related, I was able to use cheats freely in the server, both to switch maps (good if restricted to me and Sentinel staff) and to enable god mode (very bad, I don't want it but tested out of curiosity). Are these commands restricted to me as an admin? It would seem that way, since Sentinel's playground does not allow me to set sv_cheats to false, labeling it as a banned command. The default state of the cvar seems to be false according to the Zandronum wiki, so is it okay the way it is? I expect yes but thought I would ask.

So, what's the """"trick""" to not lose motivation while making a new mod? Because as a decorate scrub, I feel kinda like my """work""" isn't worth a dime compared to other mods like guncaster and friends and that nobody would give a damn at all about my mod. It feels like I'm working on a project that will fail regardless of what I do simply because "It's another randomizer mod".

It's not solely about your own "happiness". I mean, watching the comment section of my mod file getting filled with "Another randomizer mod? lol." would not "make me happy" in any way.
Then again, posting a half-baked mod expecting good samaritans to drop comments like "Hey, this is good!" would be worse than a proper one. But posting a mod that is "ready" to a clientelle that simply doesn't give a damn would be worse, tho.
...idk, it's like I shouldn't be modding at all until I can challenge "the big fishes" (guncaster, etc). Which is pretty much impossible since that'd mean spending months or even years of my life span learning how to draw and drawing every sprite... *sigh
I'm about to throw the towel desu.

Start small, don't be too over-ambitious. And who are you modding for anyway?

I make mods because I have an idea and want to bring that to life. I post them on the ZDoom forum to archive them, but overall, I don't really care if people download and play that stuff.
Of course depending what kind of mod you want to make, there's a whole bunch of additional stuff you have to take care of. During summer I had a silly idea for a weapon. While making it I realized that using Decorate will make thing overly complicated. I wanted to learn ZScript for some time anyway, so I pulled the trigger and delved into that shit. I still don't understand most of it, but I managed to cobble stuff together enough to make it work as intended.

And remember that the big, lauded mods have YEARS of development behind them. Like Hideous Destructor, do you think Matt just pulled that out of thin air? HD is not only a few years, but over a decade old. Ashes 2063 is also already a few years old. And remember that those mods also usually have more than a single person working on them and that those people have YEARS of experience.

I mean, I made the first Lawgiver in Decorate in 2017 or so. It was a horrible mess. Then this year with my new zscript knowledge I managed to overhaul some of my old mods, among which the Lawgiver was. With a new, more robust codebase (until an update breaks stuff), I decided what the hell, let's also make some maps. And especially concerning the Lawgiver, the original sprites were HORRIBLE. The new ones are also not the best possible, but at least I had a great model to work with that some nice anon here provided.
