First person shooters were always going to become more atmosphere/story focused as technology improved and Half-Life was just the standout game of its type.

While Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy VII delivered beloved entries that solidified a cinematic experience while furthering their genre's golden age, Half-Life instead relied on trickery and gimmick to deliver a trite, faux-"cinematic" experience that catered to a gamer's "ego" and imploded the genre it was a part of.
Possibly one of the most overrated games of all time.

Aliens vs Predator, despite being released in 1999 (after Half-Life), still belongs to the old arcade style shooters. The genre just slowly bled to death. People were getting fatigued in the late 90's with all the oldschool FPS games. I think Half-Life only partly contributed to the decline, it did however introduce 'scripted sequences' that led to (almost non-interactive) movie-like games such as Call of Duty.

Half Life and it's mods will still beloved and there's nothing you can do about it.
