Here's what I've gathered from fighting games.

They're one on one fights. You dont have a team to blame for losing. Just yourself. They also require dedication and learning to get good at. Mediocre ass dudes who can claim to be good at cheesing Castlevania bosses or something get put back to square one when they get bodied. They also overestimate their abilities. Here is what really happened with SF3.

1997 - New Generation comes out, no one plays it, because cps3 systems are ultra rare in the west. Japan hates it. So there is no scene.
Capcom updates the game with 2nd impact. Nothing changes.

1999 - 3rd strike comes out. Again ultra rare sight in the west. Japan doesnt care at first.

2000 -3rd strike comes out for the dreamcast.
This is the first time many players get to play 3s.

2001 - you can buy 3rd strike cps3 boards for dirt cheap. Because no one wants the game.

2002 - Slowly a tournament scene forms in japan, europe, and later in the usa. Gamefaqs is your friend for combos and strategies.

2003 - 3s tourney are still underground. Not many people enter. The majority prefers A3 and ST. Japan has ranking battles. 3s debuts at EVO in the usa.

2004 - 3s comes out for XBOX, with online play on XBL. And it comes out for PS2. And this is the exact moment in time when third strike gains massive momentum. This has absolutely nothing to do with daigo or evo moment xyz. Its just the fact that the PS2 enables 3s to go mainstream. And all of a sudden 3s tourney pop up everywhere.

So when people say daigo made 3s popular. Thats just bullshit.

Personally I feel good about having saw the beauty in 3 even before it blew up. SF2 was a crazy phenomenon, people who had barely any interest in fighters got it. But by the time 3 rolled around the series was old news, arcades had changed and the genre was split between 2D and 3D. It was no shock to anyone that semi odd playing new 2D SF with a tiny roster of new characters wasn't received well. Underneath that though were the bones of a solid-ass fighter that once refined got the attention it deserved.
