Super Metroid is not as good as you said it was.

It's actually better than I thought it was as a teenager.
I discover something new about it every time I play it.

the only fault would be the lack of a harder mode.

Honestly, coming back to it after playing Hollow Knight, it's amazing how far ahead Metroid is still in terms of progression, worldbuilding and meaningfully rewarding exploration.

The main fault of the best 8 and 16-bit games is a lower than ideal difficulty, despite the frequent whining to the contrary. They're very replayable games only made less so by lack of difficulty. It's a shame

It mostly is, but you're on the /vr/ board so they're gonna A) have nostalgia goggles and B) be contrarian and C) be trolls. Lots of bad takes. In terms of aesthetic and soundtrack--that's very subjective. I can definitely see someone liking SM more. But gameplay-wise it's no question. The wall jump alone proves that. It's not done well in SM. Even other games of the SNES era like Mega Man X had decent wall jumping. SM is the grandfather of this genre and absolutely deserves all its praise, but HK is absolutely a modern classic in its own right. I've played a lot of modern indie games that LOOK ok but have all sorts of little things you can nitpick, but HK is a perfect "new retro" style sort of game. Same with Streets of Rage 4. HK has been enjoyed by millions of people for good reason.

Super Metroid is pretty fantastic, I still prefer it over any other "Metroidvania" today or then.

>> No.7029317

I could never get into it as a child/teenager and as a jaded 28 year old man that is barely into gaming anymore, it’s a beloved favorite and all time classic.

Super Metroid has much nicer graphics.

>> No.7029342

>> No.7029347

Super Metroid really doesn't feel like a Nintendo game. It is like F-Zero X. Something that seems just way too interesting to be from Nintendo. The graphics are some of the best of any game ever. It is one of the best looking games of all time, and it is on the SNES, which is not where you'd expect to see that at all. The music is haunting and memorable. The atmosphere is simply perfect.
I don't like pixel hunting though, so I actually don't really enjoy the game and haven't since I first rented it as a kid.

It's to be expected. I think a lot of anons start out here with good intentions, and just get worn down over time by the abysmal post quality.

>> No.7029949

I disagree with the OP too. I'm playing Super Metroid as of lately and it's being a blast. I can't put down the damn thing. What is this flamboyant faggot saying? Granted, I have a soft spot for this genre of games, but this game is just a blast to discover and play through, even compared to most indie stuff that tries to mimick it.

Exactly, stuff like SM, Contra 3 or Hagane feel almost like Genesis games instead, they're so confidently hardcore and not kiddieshit like the usual fare.

>> No.7030632

>>7030630
That's like saying Sonic feels like a Nintendo game. Stupid thing to say. The notion that one of those consoles was for mature games, and one of them was for kiddie games is just advertising nonsense.

>> No.7030656

>>7030632
No, I think that's fairly accurate considering how heavily censored SNES titles are by comparison.

>> No.7030671

>>7030656
Maybe for things like religious imagery. Not for things that just "feel hardcore" in a general sense. SNES has loads of games like that. They even got away with some surprisingly gory games like Weaponlord, so I have no idea what the criteria was there.

Compare the SNES vs Genesis versions of games like Mortal Kombat or Doom Troopers. SNES got cucked hard with blood/gore.

Strangely selectively though. Didn't MK2 have just as much blood on SNES anyway?

Don't bother replying to these kind of people. They were brainwashed as kids by american marketing teams who divided people into "kiddie" and "mature".
Some of my favorite Mega Drive games include Castle of Illusion, Quackshot, Tiny Toon Adventures and Super Fantasy Zone. Fuck if I care about what american "mature gamers" think.

>> No.7032180

I only played it after playing the GBA games first and thought it was amazing. The biggest downsides are the unskippable opening, no hard mode, and the final boss being a cutscene.

>> No.7032216

The greats unfortunately get over hyped, and it ends up ruining them.

The problem is that there's huge expectations put on it, so you don't really give it an honest chance because you're expecting it to be flawless.

That's what ruined FF7 for me. It's quite possibly the most overrated game of all time, but that's not it's fault.

I think I've noticed a correlation between these types of games with shooting and those without shooting.

Like, Metroid I never cared for. SotN, Monster Boy, I really like. I don't know why that makes such a big difference to me. Maybe that the melee based ones feel more platformer like and faster. I don't know though.
