It's fine. It's just exactly as I said: Every criticism ever uttered about Serious Sam being a brainless shooter is far more fitting for Painkiller. And it's the furthest thing from retro shooter, or any kind of "homage" to retro shooter you could ever get. It's nothing like Quake, Blood, Doom, Hexen, none of them. But despite that, it's a very enjoyable shooter. The art direction is fantastic, the guns feel nice, enemies are enjoyable to kill. It's a good time. It just has far less place in these threads than even Serious Sam.

I would say change this part. The other wing is straightforward, but this wing has an irritating damage floor that has no safe area to get to besides the stairs which is guarded by imps, two hell knights and a mancubus in fairly tight space. With green armor and plasma/rockets as the best weapons it seems you have to play very calm and precise whilee taking damage -- trying to rush in those conditions with plasma (or rockets, even more suicidal) is not going to end fast enough. To top it off there's health that you need back on the drop-off which you lose access to, and a rad suit AFTER the encounter, which feels out of place -- if anything, the radsuit feels like it ought to be a means to take on the encounter rather than a reward for clearing it.

Like, if the positions were reversed, it would be a very simple if kind of toothless battle, since the damage floor wouldnt be an issue anymore and you could duck behind the wall for cover. Making a trapped suit in the damage floor area (with a few minor enemies around) as a lure that triggers the ambush of tougher enemies might make things more interesting, though there's not a lot of space down there to begin with. I died there like four times, granted a couple were to the archvile that killed me later thanks to my drained health and cramped space.

The detailing looks nice though, and the ammo balance is a bit tight, but encourages use of all weapons to get through things. Might make shotgun lovers sad. Haven't found any secrets, this is a map that I'd definitely appreciate some extra staying power or ammo in.

.Oh yeah, it's kind of minor, but it's kind of hard to tell that the red switch is there. Looking straight into the lift you can't tell it's a red switch unless you're at an angle.

There will be very small changes in game behavior without using the correct complevel in Prboom+, if you care about this then I can tell you that there are only 3 that matter: complevel 2 for everything that claims to be vanilla or limit-removing, complevel 9 for Boom-compatible wads, complevel 11 for MBF-compatible wads. I went through it again a few times with a save spot, and still managed to die a few times, sometimes due to rocket splash and sometimes to the archvile. If the revs come out first and get resurrected once or twice by the vile the player can be in a bit of an ammo pinch.

It's certainly doable, but I'd say it's the hardest part of the level. The crampedness of the area, the damage floor, the lack of cover, and the danger level of the enemies, just makes that area the most difficult part, in my opinion.

It does feel like the stimpacks and ammo rewards are a little light, especially compared to the other side of the map. I played it in Zandronum though, so maybe there's a trap that didn't trigger? There were a few monsters I didn't kill, maybe I'll load up the map again in a different sourceport and try again.

I played your map. I thought it was pretty fun and attractive, I really like non-linear levels. The only game breaking problem I encountered was that three spectres and a revenant failed to teleport in.
I have some minor issues as well, like how there are no secrets and how there's a real concern about ammo if any of the archviles happen to ressurect much. The ammo is especially low at the end considering the barons that become a non threat as soon as you leave the pit.
As for the hurty floor room, I also thought it was harsh with health, and I think it's unlikely the player will see the rad suit, because the mancubus is standing right in front of it. It's possible you could get a similar effect by putting it in front, or just higher up so it's more visible.

I may consider it the best shooter released in years but I get divisive with it at times. Reloading is a big one: You can cancel a reload by switching weapons but the gun still ends up getting reloaded, and then you can just switch back to it. I don't think this works with the "last weapon used" button, just directly switching to it's assigned key.
On one hand it's kind of fun and feels slick to do, especially if you're weird like me and use mwheelup and mwheeldown to two different weapons and not to scroll through them. On the other hand, it makes you wonder why they even have reloading at that point.

Build was a hacked together mess of an engine and most devs had no clue what they're doing. The holy trinity is so revered for being the exceptions and somehow managing to use the Build engine to its potential. It was hard to use, most games that were made with it were extremely flawed to be generous, and full 3D engines were being licensed so there was less incentive after a couple years. Final Doomer is a pwad that lets you pick a character from various megawads with their own custom weapon set, including Whitemare guy, Japanese Community Project guy, Hellbound guy, etc. Doom Roguelite Arsenal is a mod that turns Doom into a roguelite, but it also comes with just the monsters pack. It's a good time. Most monster packs will go well with any pwad, i.e.

>Combined Arms + Doom RLAMonsters
But the mack daddy is Colorful Hell. Colorful Hell is a mod that, as the name implies, gives every enemy variant palette swaps with different attacks and stats, along with bonus bosses and enemies not found in Doom. Any and all can be toggled on or off, it's quite customizable. Another facet of CH is that certain enemies will drop big bonuses of weapons, ammo backpacks, or health drops. As such, it makes it perfect to be combined with many mods like
>Project Brutality 3.0 + Colorful Hell + Pistol start
Project Brutality is a megamod of new enemies, gore, and tons of weapons, but enabling Colorful Hell with PB will override all of PB's enemies in favor of Colorful Hell's. , and PB has such a variety of weapons that every map is a new box of chocolates of what weapons you'll get. Dakka and Colorful Hell also works wonderfully.

And finally, the cherry on top, Legendoom, and Legendoomlite. Legendoom is purpose-made to work with Colorful Hell, but Legendoomlite works with ANY mod. LD gives a chance for a random enemy upon dying to immediately respawn as a legendary enemy with heightened stats, completely customizable by the player. Legendoom by itself, or with Colorful Hell, has its own assortment of weapons that can drop from monsters with wildly different stats like a pistol that has a chance to do 5x damage, or a shotgun that grants +1 to max health and armor with every health pickup, bunches of different shit like mega BFGs. However, Legendoomlite lacks these weapons so a

First of all, I wasn't complaining this time, I was just wondering. Second, I don't have problems with mods per se (I tested it with Final Doomer among other things, and I usually play wads with mods myself, if they are compatible with them, of course - recent DBP projects tend to include extensive DEH modifications in them, so I play them as is), I have problems with Brutal Doom in particular. Aside from it being trash that is painful to look at, it overrides some sprite replacements from pwad, and it breaks boss encounter in the end. I should give it a try later on, but I'm pretty sure even extensive enemy modifications such as Colorful Hell and DoomRL Monsters won't do this.

- Lawgiver is great, but ammo switching system is a bit clunky (maybe because I was too lazy to assign keys to individual ammo types). Maybe some alternative system based on inventory?
- Kick should definitely be a quick kick. It's a good way to conserve ammo in theory, but holstering Lawgiver is often way too dangerous.
- Way too many hitscanners. If it was me, I would've replaced all hitscan weapons with fast projectiles, but it's just my personal quirk, not everyone would agree with it. Anyway, some perps throwing pipe bombs and molotovs would be nice, as well as muties with bows and crossbows. Also it will be cool to have a Solar Sniper with archvile attack.
- Some indication for when perp has surrendered would be good. Then again, I don't see much incentive to cuff them, action is usually too hectic to risk it.
- There's a term in Russian X-Com community - "Last Alien Syndrome". Looking all over the map for one last perp is not very fun. Maybe after you completed all the objectives and took down a certain percentage of perps, the stragglers should automatically surrender and reveal themselves on minimap?
- I may have missed it, but there should be a clear indication that you finish the mission by going out the way you came in. If I did indeed missed it, disregard this.

Yeah, it is a little bit clunky, but I wrote in the Readme to bind you keys, so that's on you. The original Lawgiver has a dial (sequential more choice) and voice activation. If I had some lines of Dredd's VA, I would have put them there because it would be fucking rad.

True, I am currently working on how to implement the Daystick as "proper" melee weapon, then the quick kick will probably go as regular quick attack somewhere. On the other hand, the weaker enemies are usually done with one kick, so if you're not out in the open, it should work well.

Heh, I expected that. I actually have several projectile shooters, but most of them are not in any level yet. And of course there will be more enemies in the future, so I might add explosive throwers.
Why did I choose hitscanners? Because I want them to be as dangerous as possible to make up for their low health (you might have noticed that most perps will die in one or two shots), so you have to be even faster. Being a street judge is fucking dangerous.

Valid point, haven't thought of that yet. I could try to add a "I surrender" voiceline, but that would probably just get drowned out, too. I try to think of something.
And yeah, cuffing at the moment is basically just for flavor until I find out how I can do a live/dead split on the tally screen. Then I might add some special bonus or challenge for arresting EVERYONE in a level.

I think it's brilliant for its era, it's pretty much the culmination of all subgun development from around the world up until that point, taking all the best lessons from before. It would eventually be surpassed by designs like the H&K MP5 and later the Steyr TMP, but working on the premise of an open-bolt blowback gun with a stamped body, you really can't make a better design, you'd need to move to a more complex action and other materials.

It also looks really cool, hence why I'm putting it in Doom.

I've barely been seeing any, apparently theyre all in secrets that I didn't find. When I saw there were 11 in the first level I looked them up and sure enough, now I have a decent amount of them. That said, getting instant hitscanned the second you round a corner from an enemy at an elevated position with cover doesn't lend well to trying to snipe them with a projectile with a travel time. I've been trying all the normal jump and crouch stuff but im still taking hits before I can find them and fire off a shot that (hopefully) connects. I've had a lot more luck with quick around the corner tnt lobs, but they require constant savescumming so I know where to throw it in the first place. That said, finally got to the train and have been finding most of the secrets so far, so I have a lot more shotgun and flares, even if I've had to waste almost all my tnt.

The maps are going to be designed around continuous play and I'm assuming most of the submissions will be balanced around Lightly Broiled.

I always put in extra placements for higher difficulties and co-op, some of the Extra Crispy spawns are downright rude.
