Eh, the seconds of load screen before matches are still less than the loading times on the CD ports.
In relation to the hardware, this was a better port than the PS1 port, since it includes the actual intro cutscene made entirely with sprites, like the arcade or Saturn version (PS1 has the grainy FMV)

Make an improvement hack that removes the load times, and true. also "SSFII Turbo" hacks for SNES and Gen adding Akuma and all that good shit would be amazing as well

PS1 also has Alpha 2 Gold which has the full sprite based intro.

Does anyone know why there were load times? Was it having to decompress assets before each round or what?

>> No.7022559

Yep.

Back in the day, SFA2 on SNES was a treat. It was decidedly inferior next to more faithful ports on more powerful hardware, but for those of us who hadn't yet moved on (and loved SFA2), this was amazing. I obviously prefer the arcade versions, but I have a special fondness for this particular port.

>Does anyone know why there were load times? Was it having to decompress assets before each round or what?

Street Fighter Alpha 2 on the SNES uses a custom processor in the cartridge called the "S-DD1". Which is a processor that can decompress a lossless compression algorithm that was used to store the gamefiles in ROM. So, there are pauses to decompress data.

Since I main charge characters, that pause ruins it for me. Typically on all other formats, a player could charge while the announcer is declaring the round, and instantly after "fight" I should be able to unleash a charge attack, but due to that pause, it reduces my options at that moment of every round. That load time ruins the balance for me.

It's not a glitch. Ever since the original Street Fighter 2 World Warrior, a player can charge at that time. In the Super Nintendo Alpha 2, the loading pause prior to the announcer saying "fight" nullifies the charge.

Take for instance Ryu/Ken/Gouki vs. Nash/Guile: when the announcer yells "fight" Ryu/Ken/Gouki has all their moves available, while Nash/Guile is left without their only 2 special attacks. So, for instance, if the already top tier shotos throw a fireball to start, Nash/Guile has only guard or vertical jump as the best options. The Ryu/Ken/Gouki player will always have first move advantage in the SNES version, gaining position, meter, and possibly a life advantage. While in all other versions, the instant sonic boom will cancel out the hadouken and Nash/Guile will recover first to make Ryu/Ken/Gouki eat a heavy backfist or lunging heavy kick and at best maybe trade with a light attack. In the non-SNES Alpha 2 it is fair because there are options to both players.

Ryu/Ken/Gouki are already top tier in Alpha2, they don't need any new advantages. That is why Alpha2Gold is received so poorly and players tend to flock to the original Alpha2: Capcom buffed the top tier and nerfed everyone else.

Serious players won't play on anything less than the arcade hardware anyway, so why even bothering complaining about the SNES port?

Just saying that it is a shame the awkward location of the load time does add in a new layer of unnecessary nerf to my mains. It plays alright, I've even played the emulated SNES port online against randoms and had fun, but unlike most other fighting games on the SNES, it has weird loading segments that mess with the flow.

I always wonder how Akuma gets around looking and acting the way he does, since Street Fighter is set in modern times after all. What does he eat? Does he go to the grocery store? Does he even have any money? How does he travel the world to fight people in all these different countries, does he have a passport? Would anyone in their right mind let this guy into a plane? Or does he just Ashura Senku over the ocean?
Ryu may be a weird hobo but at least he looks like a normal human, probably has his documents and a change of clothes in his little travel bag and likely makes money off random fighting tournaments and/or Ken pays for some of his shit.

Akuma lived alone on a small island (Alpha 2) and later a cave (Alpha 3); I assume his 3rd Strike stage, also a cave, represents where he lives too. I always assumed he lived off the land and was "off the grid," like how a lot of old karate masters are portrayed. As for getting around the world, the simplest explanation is that World Warrior tournaments pay for the private transportation of its participants--I don't think that holds up well to scrutiny, but I also don't think anyone at Capcom gave it any closer thought.

Same here. This game was a favorite among my group of friends. None of us had a PS1 or Saturn, so the SNES version was all we had and we loved it.

It's really impressive what companies could pull off by squeezing everything they could out of the SNES.

He sells fruit. He's a drifter like Ryu and is only interesting in finding worthy opponents to battle. He's different from Ryu in that his motivations are suicidal. It's also implied he's only really interested in hurting/killing people who he fights or deems worthy.

I think it's a misunderstanding that anyone who succumbs to the killing intent automatically becomes "chaotic evil".
Oni is a little different:
>Oni has discarded his remaining humanity (saying that it is of no use to "evil incarnate"), his identity as Akuma, and his prominent moral code as a warrior; he will fight anyone to the death, regardless of condition, rather than seeking out worthy opponents to fight in a fair match. His presence is such that certain characters even refer to him as a god in their win quotes.

Just because it appears in an anime that take generous liberties with the entire franchise doesn't mean it's "canon." Although even it was, his portrayal here--just popping up with entirely different groups of people in different situations around the world, all while wearing the same dirty gi--doesn't strike me as "regular dude." Even Ryu wore street clothes in this.

I haven't paid much attention to the past decade or so of SF games, but it always seemed to me like the drive to fight completely supplanted the drive to have sex. SF games are like late-night Cinemax for fightersexuals. "Hey dude, weird mohawk!" "Whatever punk" [immediately engages in fight]
