Just played through Mordeth, and it's left me confused. Like, I don't get it.
The levels were nice (though fuck MAP05's key hunting), well-laid-out and nicely detailed, I'm not going to claim the wad is bad. But why is this the wad that people clamored for a sequel so badly that Mordeth became a meme? I don't mean that in a "2020 man not too impressed by wad from 1997" either, I've been playing through the 100 WADs list and when there are wads like Requiem and STRAIN being made at the same time this doesn't seem THAT good. Is there something I'm missing, some cultural factor lost to me?

Kind of the meme factor. As you say, the levels aren't bad, they're largely decent or good, but I think people figured it looked promising, and was hoping he'd follow through and actually make the full thing and that it would be something particularly good.

IIRC Mordeth said a few years back that the project wasn't dead, though I have no idea if that was in jest or not, considering that like 12 years ago, a burglar broke into his home and stole his computer, hence all that he had actually made for Mordeth (published or not), was then gone, and hasn't been recovered since. This was referenced in Action Doom 2 : Urban Brawl, where you can break into an apartment and steal said computer (which gives you 100,000pts).

Mordeth had quite unique theme for 97 with that whole swamps, castles and towns. Maps were atmospheric and comfy for the time. Requiem and strain followed more of the Memento Mori formula, which was essentially Doom 2, but with actually good maps.

Also there werent many wads which had custom monsters back then, but Mordeth was one of them. Only ones i can think of were Strain, Obituary and All Hell, and none of them really shined with map design.

It's more of a sandbox. But my approach is more open anyway, i.e. it's more about the enemies than about the actual level.
HOWEVER, I noticed that here the different roles of the ammotypes aren't really as pronounced as I would like them to be. It's certainly due to the fact that I've been working on this level for some time now and also further developed the gun, how I use enemies and other mechanisms, so the design doesn't reflect entirely what I am trying to do.

Pic related is the mall info point, there you can see the general layout of how the stores are laid out. Please note that this is not the whole level, this is just the publicly accessible stuff.

I also wanted to post how I decided to do the tally screen now.
I had asked a few threads before for suggestions how to treat "secrets" in this mod. Someone suggested hidden weapons/drugs caches, but I think that should be already contained in "Evidence".
During the making of the mall, I thought it would be cool to have civilians, and quickly I started implementing a hostage situation.
The whole thing right now is extremely hacky, as I still haven't managed to find out how StatScreen works, so I resorted to making the civilians trigger secrets on death, i.e. if no innocents die, you will get 0% "casualties", whereas with each dead civilian you will slowly make your way to 100%. In this case I managed to "save" them all. I hope I manage to one day understand the stat screen, but until then, that is how it is.
And yeah, the "finished" will also not stay red, once I figure out how.

Why not just make all secrets associated with rescuing hostages so it's a total percentage instead? Name it "Rescued Civs," "Civilians Saved," or something else so it's a bit more understandable. I think it could work with making civs rescued the secrets (though that would mean doing some code stuffs), but my original reason was that there aren't always hostage situations, but there can be collateral damage, so a judge finishing the assignment with no casualties, i.e. all hostages saved if applicable AND no bystanders or pedestrians or tenants killed, is the ideal outcome; whereas people who might get hurt in the crossfire weren't originally in peril, thus having them not died wouldn't mean I you saved them.

I often hear about how great doom/doom 2's monster sets are for the interesting combat encounters you can set up with different demon combinations. Arch Viles are extremely great ways to tilt the entire balance of any encounter on its head. Imagine a room full of shotgunners and zombiemen opening, and then midway through it, an Archvile and two cacodemons pop out. Now EVERYTHING has fucking changed.

The thing about Doom theory regarding items and monsters is that it's honestly really malleable based on which monster comes out at what point, at what distance, and so on. The best example of a sandbox in Doom imo is Plutonia, because the monsters are used in so many different roles to the point the wad almost feels like a puzzle rather than combat, and I fucking love it for that. If you want another one to check out, FreeDoom's latest versions have some very run of the mill encounters, but their older versions, specifically Map 10 in version 0.6.4, have some very painful ones that showcase the best and worst places to use monsters.

All the UI is scaled to 480p. No sound on modern systems. Mouse controls are basically unusable as sensitivity is all over the place. Super smooth framerate at least.

The holy trinity of making challenging encounters without going slaughter is the chaingunner, revenant and archvile.
Chaingunners are high-danger hitscanners who force the player to take cover if they can't immediately take them out; placing them at enough of a distance that the player can't just SSG them encourages more diverse weapon usage, and placing them in conjunction with other, more immediately dangerous monsters allows you (the mapper) to control space by limiting the player to areas where they can't be hit, or otherwise force the player to prioritize the chaingunner while weaving around the other monsters.
Revenants remove the player's ability to just strafe through projectiles, and in conjunction with straightforward projectiles creates a much more dynamic field. Their high damage potential makes them similarly high profile targets as turrets, or as pursuing enemies due to their high speed. Their main weakness is the capacity to infight by steering their homing rockets, but you could use homogenous monster variety or place them separate from the other monsters to mitigate that if you want to.
Archvile is the highest-priority target in the majority of encounters you make, for reasons >>7018343 has said better than me.

Besides that:
Pinkies/spectres are good at controlling space; they're easy to avoid on their own but a group of them in conjunction with a high-health enemy like a baron/mancubus/etc. can force the player to ignore a more immediately dangerous enemy to thin the herd lest they be boxed in.
Shotgunners are burst damage, good tools to keep the player on their toes between larger fights or to apply less aggressive pressure than chaingunners. Zombiemen are generally not dangerous and can just be used as fodder, while imps provide larger danger in groups than either due to the lack of infighting. Groups are more dangerous in the early parts of levels if you withhold the SSG (always build your levels around pistol start primarily)

Mancubi, arachnotrons and stationary cyberdemons all apply different flavors of pressure, creating dangerous forces up close and something to make the player aware of their surroundings on the sidelines of fights. Generally anything not hitscan will be treated as lower priority by the player when placed outside the immediate fighting arena compared to what's in the player's space.
Barons can be used as doors with health level anon said, but also serve as mini-bosses in setpieces due to their stay. Hell knights are similarly good, consider replacing some barons with knights if barons would make an encounter lopsided and take too long to kill.
Lost souls are similar to pinkies but more dangerous due to their charge and flight; pain elementals are because of that high-priority, but their nature makes it more difficult for the mapper to lock down how the encounter will play out, and easier for a bad situation to spiral out of control (ESPECIALLY if an enemy aggros them). Use sparingly if the rest of your encounter is particularly large.
Spider masterminds aren't very good; their size makes it impossible to use them in most practical ways, you have to design the setpiece entirely around the mastermind. I can't give any advice with them.

Seconding Requiem the other anon said. Then there's essential hard wads of the day: Hell Revealed 1 and 2, Scythe 1 and 2 and Alien Vendetta. Strain, All Hell and Obituary for classic dehackery work with new monsters and weapons. Crusades and 2002 Doom Odyssey for excellent Doom 1 wads. Phobos Anomaly Reborn, Caverns Of Darkness and Mordeth for atmospheric map sets (with classic gameplay). CoD had it's own dos source port, but later zdoom patch was made. (Hope we get Eternity Engine version one day too.)

Then there's Eternal Doom 3, if you don't mind gigantic maps with long switch hunts. Back in the day, that wad was one of most revered though. I think that those castle enviroments look quite nice to this day.

And also try Darkening 1 and 2. Decent map sets, and second one had nice textures.

Another note on PEs, knowledgeable players will run straight to it in an attempt to block its hitbox, so as to stop it from spawning lost souls. You can use this to your advantage, as a mapper. Reading what most players would logically do in a situation is a good idea, always.

Don't use Pinkies as much as people often do. Their attacks are avoidable, they're walking meat walls. They're only ever deadly in high numbers, in small areas with not much place to run to.

Use every enemy sparingly, honestly. Revenants are greatly versatile (probably the most of all), but if you use too many of them in your level, that's just cheap, and at worst, annoying. Same goes for Archviles.

As for a general encounter design tip, don't make the player rely on taking cover too much, especially behind doors -- don't have all enemies in a different room the moment you open the door leading to it, that'll just generate "door combat": the player will stand next to the door, sniping every enemy in the room until it is clear. This has its place, but it's not good when it's noticeable.

I just finished running through the Downtown Journey episode, and I largely agree with this anon. It does a good job maintaining a gloomy urban atmosphere throughout, and it has its moments. I thought the last level (the footy stadium) was particularly well designed, and the mall and train levels were both fun novelties, although both were flawed. Nowhere in the first area should be even close to pitch black or even dark. Play around with the gamma/brightness/visibility settings.

Are you using software or polymer rendering? Also Duke is all about interactivity. There's light switches you can turn on in rooms sometimes if they're too dark.

Dukes audio? Hmm... Play around with the khz settings maybe? Are you using latest eduke32? Where did you get your Duke files from? Like a gog torrent? The 20th anniversary has fucked voice audio.

As for one way doors? No they don't exist. Doors will often be locked and unlockable only from the other side where you need to find and alternative route around but doors should open normally if unlocked. Thought doors can be wonky on build engine. You can even get killed opening doors.

It might just be where I'm looking, but it seems like the Quake game with arguably the most multiplayer-centric mods is the hardest to find custom playermodels for.
Quake 1 only had limited skin support through QW, but I found a bunch through the Wikia and random image searching.
Quake 3 didn't feel like the kind of game people would've made this stuff for, yet Worldspawn has almost 200 pages worth of it.

Currently speaking i have added
>Build engine style quaking Explosions (togleable)
>Unique stuff for barrels (they get an Xdeath, which causes them to explode even more violently)

Two shells at once are better than one shell followed by another - you'll reliably drop ninja pirates, cacodemons, and revenants with one doubleshot where two shots from the hunter won't always cut it. Slayer's also more maneuverable, has a more consistent reload speed, and can be kept in a backpack. Generally, it's better than the Hunter for all the situations you should be using a shotgun for, while the situations that the Hunter is better at are better approached by weapons that aren't shotguns.

Its okay, I am not anal about textures mods. I especially love how clean and competent visual design and textures are in SS2.

Some weapons replacers are kinda wonky I avoid those.


Its open hell of an adventure with really nice characters that shit all over stuff in the new Prey, or Dead Space comparisons.

Just be careful with builds, and start as a marine with some hacking first. Never do a first run as a psionic or invest in it.

Has anyone played Realms of Haunting? Never heard of it till I saw ADG recent review of it, but it looks like an adventure game with FPS combat, the sprites and animations for the weapons are pretty cool, especially the shotgun. Depends on the game. Duke (and games based on it like Redneck Rampage and Ion Fury) has CON scripts that you can edit to completely change how they behave and add new stuff. Blood has a limited animation scripting system, Im not sure how it works but I doubt it could change the enemies like that. Shadow Warrior isnt moddable at all beyond replacing sprites/sounds.

UV on the original Doom maps is fairly easy compared to most games "hard" difficulty, especially if you're playing continuously (with your guns each level) and using saves. The best we can hope for is for Crispy Doom to become better than it already is, fixing up PrBoom+, and GzDoom seeing its own improvements, maybe, just maybe one day it can have better multiplayer support so that Zandybam becomes obsolete. Then all of that with UMAPINFO.

Blogpost time, but I've seen the S+M1 criticism thrown at Serious Sam for years, and I've never understood it. I had a funny eureka moment when I first tried Painkiller a few months ago. EVERY single thing I had ever seen lobbed at Serious Sam was applying to Painkiller, even on the highest difficulty. Enemies just run towards you mindlessly, you have a shotgun that may as well be classified as an autoshotgun, I couldn't believe it. Maybe the later levels change it up, but hoo boy was I fucking bored. The style and presentation is top notch though.

Is this what getting good feels like? Map 21 of eviternity gives you a standard shotgun and a chaingun and then puts you in a shootout with about a dozen shotgunners, a couple revenants, a spider demon, and a mancubus all across a lava pool from you. It's unfortunate that lots of decisions make me wonder what the fuck Croteam was thinking. Giving the player the minigun and taking it away the first time? Fine. Tease me. Giving the player the minigun and taking it away the second time? Fucking bollocks to the nth degree. I was 10/10 platinum mad, not because they took away the minigun per se, or even your whole arsenal (yes really), but the player is about halfway through the game. Now is NOT the time to start building up tension all over again by making players start with just the pistol. I was fucking amped, I've got my minigun, my rocket launcher, grenade launcher, shotguns, almost the full gunnage and they start throwing wimpy dozen enemy setups at me again. And then they have the gall to throw another forced vehicle section on you, holy shit. Serious Sam fans do not play these games for the vehicle sections jesus fucking christ. 10/10 France made me so mad, good job you stupid Croation fucks.

I just ordered then original Xbox port of Serious Sam which has First and Second encounter just because it was another old school shooter to add to the ones I have on console and it was backwards compatible in a 360. Come to find out it is considered the superior versions of the two games, with better models and textures, etc. to the point there are mods for the PC version to try to make it like the XBox version. Was only 7 buck too.

I had wanted to get the Serious Sam Collection on 360 which is 4 different games plus DLC but that shit is apparently rare, most sites were out of stock and used prices were about 40 bucks, and new ones for $100+.

I think my dream Wolfenstein game would be something like a remake of Return To Castle Wolfenstein, level design and missions would be much the same (and obviously the music too), but it would have gun handling similar to Wolfenstein 09'. Maybe skip the ADS, or make it inconsequential for weapons which aren't rifles (like the Mauser and FG42), possibly also let you detach and reattach scopes as you feel like.

Main problem is just that the game starts off really slow and generic, so most people dropped it or didn't get very invested when it first came out, especially since it came 8 years after such a great game like RTCW. Easily the peak of the series, the only slight contest is New Order and Old Blood. They were lightning in a bottle and the New Colossus threw that bottle at a fucking brick wall and then pissed on the shattered remains. How are the Painkiller games? Worth it for a retro shooter/Serious Sam fan? Been thinking of getting Painkiller: Hell Wars for OG Xbox just to try it, its at a local place for cheap. I think its the original and expansion put together. There is one for 360 too but I don't know if it's a sequel or what. I remember people celebrating it as a return to old school shooters when it first came out on PC but I never played it.

Pretty good. I'd recommend setting framerate to 120 for optimal gameplay for that game in particular as physics were optimized for it.
