The music in the beginning area is kind of meh, it's making me fall asleep. The dungeon music also seems a bit bland. But the fields to the left music is pretty boppin' at least. I also think there needs to be a sound effect for when you talk to NPCs, and you should use white text instead of grey. It blends in too well with the dark GUI area. I'm pretty sure there's no way to actually pause the game, which is mildly annoying. Either that or my select button isn't working right. The room just before the king, the split off hallways seem like they lead to rooms, but apparently don't. I don't know if you plan on adding rooms later, maybe. Are you using only a single sprite for every single kind of pickup? Having some different sprites would be nice. I also can't tell how monsters attack. They don't seem to bump into you, it's just you stand beside them and sometimes they hurt you. I died as soon as I stepped into a room just because a bat was beside the door when I entered.

>> No.7022726

>>7022710
Right. As I said, it's these little details that Konami, Enix, etc wouldn't have overlooked back in the day. Also not having a pause feature is bullshit since no licensed NES game would have omitted it. It feels like a beta version of a game and not something that would have been put out as a finished product.

If the source code is available online though, perhaps some of us could work and improve it.

>Im expanding it to UNROM, though.

The standard size for UNROM games is 128k although 256k was occasionally used (eg. the Famicom version of DQ3). But I'd go with MMC1 as it allows more flexible banking and save game support which is kind of needed for an RPG unless you want to have 100 character passwords.

>> No.7023082

Also MMC1 lets you set the tile map mirroring on the fly while discreet logic mappers are fixed to either H or V mirroring. You may not necessarily need to switch mirroring types during the game, but it does let you get more flexible with scrolling the screen around.

Maybe a wiggle or something. Or the enemies facing changes. I'd know it's going to hit me if it was looking at me. A short wiggle wind up would work too though. Or maybe it winds up in the opposite direction before launching at you?

True. For a while it was OK here, but these days 60% of all comments are just someone shitting on someone else for no reason, and 9/10 that shitter is a complete idiot, saying something like "No one cares about source code" or something else similarly idiotic.

The thing that really sucks about it is that there are people on this board like OP who actually take the time to do something and share it here first, and people here should be more like "Wow, that's cool! Maybe not for me, but you tookt he time and did something and that's cool." Kinda like the whole Internet, now...

If you want hugbox replies, just post your shit on reddit. This is one of the few places people will actually tell you what's wrong with your game. Granted, sometimes you have to fish it out of them because "it's shit" doesn't tell you anything, but people are usually willing to give some kind of specific reason. Places like r/gamedev or itch are so far up their ass in "don't say anything mean, dey worked weally hawd on dis" that you hardly get a chance to see where you can improve.

Nearly everything in this thread is garbage. It's not a matter of stepping around it. It's more like making huge, desperate leaps across the fecal swamp from one precarious perch to another... for the sake of what? The startling revelation that it's bad for the player to be unable to tell whether an enemy is even attacking? Come on. If OP can't provide that level of criticism OPself, then OP may not even be worth advising. And how much trash should really be tolerated for so little reward?

This isn't some harshly meritocratic place where tough people who have worked hard to cultivate strong emotional shells are able to receive great rewards. It's just one more backwater trashhole where fat malcontents with bad hairdos snipe at each other over nothing as a distraction from how little they're accomplishing.

The predominant narrative that shitposters have ingrained in their heads is that making useless posts is a virtuous act purposely designed to build character, but all it does in reality is force actually contributing users to seek other communities that have actual moderation without tacit encouragement of shitposting. Observations:
*Tiled movement is clunky but could work alright if a way to turn without moving was implemented. Obviously free movement would be best but I understand. Maybe the sword can swing in an arc to catch adjacent tiles to make up for the lack of movement capability.
*Unless the magic meter was given something other than the ice rod to do, magic meter is almost pointless.
*I like the 2-player aspect. 2nd player with boomerang equipped worked well.
*Inventory management is tough when there's a fight going on as things are now. Maybe a proper pause menu would be better?
*Graphics are a little ho-hum (FF Adventure is a good starting point) but functional. If you're interested I might know a guy who knows about NES graphics.

Good work. Would play again.
