Am I the only one who enjoys this game?

It has it's share of problems (respawning enemies, ridiculously stupid gun) but it's always a game I go back to and beat. It lacks a little polish but in my opinion Fester's Quest is an underrated gem but God help you if you don't play with a turbo controller.

>> No.701496

I played it a bit at a friend's house when I was a kid and I remember enjoying it. The fake 3D stuff was pretty ass though.

>> No.701503

I really love the overworld music from this game. And that's about it.

>> No.701526

I never played it. Did this game have GOD-TIER music like Blaster Master and other Sunsoft stuff?

>> No.701531

Fuck those mosquitoes, and their ability to permanently slow you.

>> No.701571

I did enjoy it then, and do enjoy it now for the nostalgia value. It is a unique and weird game.

>>701526
Isn't necessarily GOD-TIER, but is earwormy and comfy (fits the mood of the game) while playing.

The downgrades? Or the annoying way any obstacle could block your shots?

>> No.701605

>>701594

Yeah and you could bend the shots around enemies, absolutely disgusting

>> No.701658

For a game from 1989, it's pretty impressive. The only flaws that I can think of are as follows.

*Narrow corridors block your shots. It wouldn't be such a problem if the corridors were wider than they are. You literally have to position yourself just right to be able to make your shots. The Yurop version fixes this, meaning your shots now go through walls.

*Some enemies have too much health. It's not that big of a deal really, but it is in a game which relies on Takahashi-Meijin like button presses. Making your weapons semi-automatic (meaning they fire at a predetermined rate, but can still fire faster if you mash the buttons) would be neat. The Yurop version makes the enemies considerably weaker.

*No diagonal movement. Considering Blaster Master walks in diagonals but Fester can't, this is a huge step down. And while Fester isn't exactly slow, he can barely out maneuver enemies, and no diagonals fucks your mobility up.

*Respawning enemies. There's a difference between revisiting a location once you killed some enemies and they show up, and just killing them infinitely unless you move. Coupled with the small passageways, this becomes a chore.

*Small health bar. Fester starts out with 2 hit points, and he can have up to 4. It might be too "izi-modo" if we bumped up his health to 6, but it would be a neat addition. Additionally, make it so that once his lifebar is empty, he can only take one more hit before he dies, effectively giving him +1. However, on his final straw, so to speak, he should move at his slowest, and encourage you to get a health powerup.

*THE CONTINUE DOESN'T WORK. AT ALL. Well, it does, it only keeps track of what you just got, but it sends you right to the beginning. At the very least, it could place checkpoints at the end of sewers and every time you beat a boss.

Fun fact: This is the very first SunSoft game to utilize the now commonplace Bassline DPCM trick.

Currently downloading this version. Thank you, anon.

As an Addams Family fan, it's a real treat and one of the better licensed titles from the 80's. It's difficult and unfair but it's not a bad game. I think the only reason it got a shitty rap was because of AVGN drones.

I still vividly remember seeing this commercial on TV all the time, back then. It was marketed to be unfair.

Sunsoft's entire videogame gimmick was making 2hard4u games. This was to compensate for their laughably short durations, as all the space was chewed up by the bassline DPCM samples. The average Sunsoft games used up to 8 bassline samples, each being 1000+ bytes in size. 8KB might not be much, but in 128KB games, that's a huge increment. The average DPCM sample is around 150 bytes.

The only Sunsoft games that are legitimately long are Batman ROTJ, Blaster Master, and Gimmick.

So, how faithful would Fester's Quest be? I'm sure the alien invasion was tacked on, unless there was an episode where aliens came down and fucked with the family.

Looking back at licensed games, it seems like they had a very good grasp on what the games were based on. For example, Karate Kid was mostly a retelling of Karate Kid 1's ending and Karate Kid 2, while Friday the 13th was a mixture of the various movies.

Fun fact: The "inconsistencies" in the TMNT NES game weren't due to Konami not doing its homework, it's because they were tapped to make the game at the same time the entire franchise was being made

The underground comic already existed but the whole kid-oriented franchise (Toys, cartoon, archie comic, videogame, cereal et al) was charted out all at once. So Konami had some initial design documents but were actually working on the game at the same time the cartoon and archie comic were still being made. That's why it's like it is; it's a weird blend of cartoon and underground comic elements because it was developed alongside rather than after

Also, i've got to play the PAL version and boy, what an improvement. It takes some of the difficulty away but the game is alot more enjoyable, especially with a turbo controller. My first playthrough, I made it to the third boss without dying once.

That being said it's almost too easy. I'm not complaining but if feels like Sunsoft added cheap difficulty to extend the play time. Regardless, it's a fun game to play through if you've never played it. You'll especially love it if you're a fan of the Addams Family.
