What the hell is a turbografx-16?

>> No.7016637

As far as I remember, it was a console that competed against SNES and Genesis but failed.
I don't really know much about it.
That would be my response back in the day.
Now I can tell you that it was the american version of Japan's popular PC Engine, a system that rivaled the mighty Famicom and took some of its market share in the later years, and competed a bit against the Super Famicom. Although it could never be as popular as neither Nintendo systems, PC Engine was more popular than Sega's systems in Japan. It got a CD add-on and one of the most acclaimed Castlevania titles, Rondo of Blood.

A friend of mine had it. We used to play the multi-player games a lot. The platformers were mostly decent, and the shooters are all awesome.

It's not as good as SNES or Genesis, but it has some very good system exclusive games or best versions of arcade ports I think.

Theres an offical PAL version of the Turbografx but it was some weird limited offer launch (you can still buy new unused ones today) It's really the American version only playing at 50 hz and a different color scheme, cards are same as the American ones.

It's some weird halfway between a NES and Mega Drive with 16-bit tier graphics and a tricked up 6502 derivative. NEC pitched it as an alternative to developers who found the NES too limiting and (in some cases) disliked Nintendo's controlling, greedy business policies. Problem was, the 16-bit consoles were just around the corner and quickly rendered it superfluous.

I did. It was the first console I bought with my own money. At a local video & electronics store in 1993 I think. The store was liquidating it for $50 with Keith Courage & a second surprise pack in which turned out to be Neutopia.

It was a small town though so I didn't know anyone else who had one plus the only places to buy games for it was that local shop, Radio Shack & pawn shops. I also got Legendary Axe II because I had it confused with Golden Axe, Bonk's Adventure which I knew from comic book ads, Bloody Wolf because it has blood in the title & Air Zonk because he was their new mascot.

I rented a couple other games and really enjoyed them but then a year later I bought a Genesis and forgot about my TG-16 in a bin until university where I could actually find more old games in the city.
