In all honesty I still think that this and A Link to the Past are better than other action-adventure and action-RPG games from that era. What are your thoughts, guys? Do you like games like Mana, Soul Blazer or Beyond Oasis more?

>> No.7005993

I think the last good, challenging game in this entire genre was Zelda 1.

>> No.7005994

>>7005946
I like Mana, but it's incomplete. LttP is one of my favorite games of all time, it's just so comfy. Zelda 1 is fun but I can only play it about once a year without getting bored. Soul Blazer is cool, but Illusion of Gaia is undoubtedly better.

>> No.7005998

Well, TLoZ completely nails the open-ended adventure thing by removing any actual RPG mechanics (or other progression based simile), thus doesn't need to funnel you around the game world.

It's a shame ALttP had to resort to funneling anyway, though you at least get a more open experience in the dark world later on.

Most Zelda clones focus too much on the hack 'n slash combat and not enough or at all on the gadget-based puzzle aspect which is what makes Zelda stand out from all the rest.

>>7006001
Other way around. Zelda 1 and 2 are still the best in the series because they're the only ones with real tension and danger. We don't need another puzzle where you shoot the switch that looks like an eye with an arrow and then use bombs on the cracked wall. It's all been done to death.

So are you saying it's the only good game in that genre? Because everything that came before it is unplayable garbage

There are high quality easy games in the genre, like LTTP. Zelda 1 is the only one I know that's both difficult and isn't unplayable.

I don't know which game it was, presumably the one you posted but I've seen art in some old Japanese gaming mag where the protagonist looked so much like Link it wasn't even funny. It was an official art as far as I remember

You mean to say that the pinnacle of gaming isn't
>dungeon gives you a 4-way intersection with one locked door
>enter side door, immediately see that one of the wall torches have gone out even before the camera automatically zooms in on it
>do the braindead "puzzle", chest shows up
>it's either the key or some rupies
>on the way back out you see a Skulltula hanging above the door you entered through
>8 Skulltulas will give you 1/4 of a heart... We're 1/24th there fellas!
>Repeat repeat repeat

I see WBiMW as an overall solid action RPG that does a lot of things well but isn't outstanding in any particular way. Compare to the two extremes of Zelda 2 and LttP where the former has first rate combat but is mostly linear and bare bones feature-wise, and the latter is absurdly easy but has great exploration and is packed with cool treasures to play with.

>>7006103
I don't get what people see in this. Slow pacing all around, painfully simple combat, weak enemy design. Is it the exploration? The story?

They're good, though they don't really stick with me. It's hard to explain. Some games like LTTP I have basically memorized from my childhood, but I never really think about it that much.

But the Quintet Tri/Quadrilogy I think of a lot. Same with Ys. They just stick out in my mind more and I love them for it.

>Zelda thread
OK everyone, listen up. I need your help finding something.
I swear to god I read somewhere a month or so ago that the working title of the original game was "Death Mountain" with I think a slightly different Japanese spelling (not katakana like the final game location), but for the life of me I can't remember where I read that and this information for some reason seems to be extremely obscure.
Am I hallucinating? Did I dream this?

Nice but I'll stay with WBiMW. Great adventure, and if there is something to improve it's the platforming aspect. I know it should be irrelevant to an adventure at first glance but both mechanics don't compete to each other. That jellypig jump part sure raised some expectations for me.

I remember hearing the game was tentatively labelled as "Mario Adventure" on internal documents but found only one where it was just plain "Adventure". And "The Hyrule Fantasy" was supposed to be the name of the series but got relegated to the Japanese logo subtitle and mentions in an English guide and back of The Adventure of Link's box. First I'm hearing of "Death Mountain" though. Might explain why the second game reveals that the first game basically entirely took place on the Death Mountain area however.

Of course. It's just that AVGN made a funny video where he played awfully on purpose and spouted a bunch of misinformation (as per usual), and then idiots took it as facts (as per usual), but it's a solid pre-Zelda/Ys you can beat in one sitting, and the sequels have unique merits of their own.

As someone who was born in 94 and fucking loves Link's Awakening, I've played every main line Zelda game at this point and I don't really understand the appeal of ALttP. Like I get for 91 it was really the first open world game, but by today's standard there is nothing really that grabs me.
The combat is straight forward, the dungeons are fine, the graphics are good, the music is excellent but I have zero desire to explore what so ever. It's feels like a linear shot in between dungeons and nothing pulls me to go see something new. Idk if it's because once you get to the dark world and then get the hammer the map opens up and you can go basically everywhere. But the great thing about Link's Awakening was how gated you were and how the game opened up the more items you collected. It made you want to explore the new areas, and it also helped that the map being smaller meant denser tiles with things to do. But Link's to the Past's world feels like lots of screens of monsters.

It puzzles me how people could think that a game that has an overworld with skulls sprouting out of the ground, talking trees with snouts that shoot bombs at you, a town made entirely of thieves with an underground hideout ruled by a refugee thief from another dimension, a mire with swampsnakes as well as no entrance and no exit with invisible enemies, a lake with a frozen over palace in the middle of it, a giant pyramid with seemingly no entrance, a mount with a constant thunderstorm around it -- and whenever the heck this thing is -- could be boring or not grab them.

Sorry man, idk what to say. I've tried beating it 3 times and I always fall off around the 2nd or 3rd dark would dungeon. Something about it just isn't compelling. I don't know how to describe it other than world feels dead and its not fun to explore. Also I guess I felt like the new weapons you get never are fun to use in a fight so I'm always just using the master sword, which gets kinda bland.
