How about a "tastebreakers" thread? A thread for people who aren't usually into a certain genre to get recommended something new/underrated/otherwise different than the usual suspects and maybe even enjoy them.

I'm usually not too into RTS games, shmups and racing games, for example. Any recommendations on that front?

>> No.7004771

Shmups - R-Type Leo. Not too hard, chill music, cool visuals.

Racing games - F-Zero X. Fast gameplay, smooth controls. Easy to learn, hard to master, but you will be fine starting out.

What's a good real time strategy game for someone who has never played one seriously? My only experience really is playing Empire Earth as a child and using cheats to nuke cavemen AIs.

For any decent recs, list some games of the genre that you disliked and why, or games adjacent to the genre you really enjoy.

There's two ways to dip your feet into a new genre:

>Pick the poster child of the genre
Pretty obvious here. Even if you know absolutely nothing about a genre, you can probably name at least one game that's a part of it. Or better yet, you can find any random "top 10 (genre) games" list and get 10 accessible games in the genre, conveniently ranked in play order.

>Pick one that stands out to you for some reason
Maybe there's one that has really nice aesthetics, a great soundtrack, an interesting-sounding gameplay mechanic, it's by a developer you like, it has some crossover with a genre you like, or whatever other reason. For an example here, I got into light gun shooters through Elemental Gearbolt, just because I thought that game had a cool name.

It doesn't matter if the game itself is bad or good by the genre's standards, since you probably don't have the foresight to determine that yet. Play your chosen game, see what you like and don't like, and then you'll have a set of preferences that will become more refined as you play other games in the genre.

>>7004793
This is also true. If you don't distinguish your taste, you're just going to get copy-pasted answers you could find from a search engine

This is a pretty good idea for a thread, OP. I don't really like FPS games, but I really do like Timesplitters.

>>7004921
Hmmm, I'd actually recommend trying out the OG Shadow Warrior. Has a similarly goofy aesthetic, robust gunplay, fast-paced. Its online scene isn't quite up to the timespltters standard, but single player should be up your alley.

>> No.7005246

>>7005023
What really sold me on Timesplitters was the fact that you could play as a robot, so if Shadow Warrior doesn't have that, I most likely wouldn't bother with it, as autistic as that sounds.

If it's strictly a matter of being a robot, the Unreal Tournaments would be up your alley I suppose. There's a robot faction, and 2k4 in particular I believe has special robot-theme taunt lines for them.

Most good made for console shooters are good for people who don't think they like shoot em ups because they aren't autistic. They are designed to be beatable by normal people. Anyone can beat MUSHA or Battle Mania.

It's just me. UT's relationship with robots is a cool one because it has possibly the most badass final boss in FPS history: Xan "The Alpha And The Omega" Kriegor, who is a bad motherfucker of a robot, and appears in multiple increasingly cooler incarnations within 99 and 2k4.

Definitely looks the part too, judging by that image.

Oh, I see. So it's kinda like Timesplitters' R-100 robots where each sequel has a new model?

Xan Mk. 2 appears in a bonus pack for 99, and Xan Mk. 3 is a possible final boss for 2k4. Canonically, they're all the same Xan, just rebuilt and upgraded after their losses.

The tecmo bowl games are fucking phenomenal sports games, some of the best in the entire genre. They still get community updates too. And, of course, there is the fact that Neo Turfmasters exists, which makes most other golf games look shitty in comparison.

Honestly? Sports games are a entire world. Pick a sport and start there.

Both of you forgot to mention, do you like turn-based strategy games? Or do you just use RTS as a catch-all term for all strategy games like too many retards nowadays do, forgetting why they were called that in the first place? Either way you might get something out of Advance Wars.

If you specifically want something real-time, maybe Populous(1/2) and Settlers(1/2).
