Why did they tell you not to clean with alcohol? Did they sell the cleaning kits at launch? Did they expect you to just not clean them despite this causing issues?

Either:
A: The sticker would get ruined or
B: It would fuck up the contacts.

>> No.7004340

This label wasn't created with the next 35 years in mind, I'm sure that was just dumb-dumb consumer protection. besides, everyone knows ya gotta bust out the BRASSO on these bad boys.

Just playing the games a handful of times will cause issues with connectivity.

>> No.7004362

>>7004334
They didn't think it was a good idea to encourage kids to use flammable and intoxicating/toxic fluids.

Also they wanted you to buy a cleaning kit.

>>7004343
Not if you do the right thing and clean the contacts inside the console before you jam some dirty ass game into it? People in the 1980s weren't slapping their NESs and blowing in the consoles all the time, they worked very well out of the box and it's very simple to restore them to that point.

Because if you clean it while drinking alcohol you may get clumsy and break it.

>> No.7004442

>>7004437
They mean isopropyl alcohol, dumbass.

>> No.7004448

>>7004338
They meant isopropyl, not beer or spirits, and it was because isopropyl can be extremely hazardous and they didn't want kids fucking with that stuff

>> No.7004451

>>7004448
Or drinking it, which is probably what anon did as a kid.

That’s bullshit and you know it.

you can drink isopropyl alcohol, it's how that one town in Russia went blind.

what the fuck am i reading
>>7004343
ever considered opening your nes and actually cleaning the contacts when it does that or did you just think it was jesus messing with you?

I've repaired over 400 NES consoles, regular use without cleaning the cartridge will cause connectivity issues. Judging from the clicks of the screws when being removed, almost nobody else thought to clean the cartridge connector on the console until I got inside of it. The NES design is terrible.

By repair I mean basic maintenance.

Because they wanted to sell you cartridge cleaner.

It's basically a "we aren't gonna be held responsible if you do something retarded like trying to clean the contacts with beer and it fucks them up".

>> No.7004840

It's like how a console would say "Warning: No user serviceable parts inside. Refer all servicing and maintenance to qualified personnel."

>> No.7005197

>>7004334

Older Circuit boards used a lot more flux on them than more modern ones. I tried cleaning a genesis 2 with alcohol and all the flux just loosened up and made the board really sticky.

The warning is so that you don't ruin the board by removing all the flux with chemicals

>>7004338
Neither. Alcohol is good for cleaning corrosion from the contacts. They dont care about the sticker either

I remember once a few years ago in uni we lived in this wreckhead house - once we got drunk, ran out of booze so started drinking isopropyl alcohol mixed with squash.

None of us went blind but I still look back on that night and think what a fucking stupid thing that was to do. I think the alcohol was pre-diluted but still...

This is a good reminder for me of what kind of person I'm slumming around with when I come to this site. Should I take it as a wake-up call?

you can quickly and easily refurb even the most fucked up carts with a simple pencil eraser

i use one from a mechanical pencil
removes corrosion/ debris
isnt wet
fast
&
doesnt risk harming the hardware
i only do this for carts that refuse to boot

nes, famicom, n64 etc

It was the era of DARE. You can't have Nintendo going around telling kids to use alcohol.

>> No.7008489

probably to prevent anyone from suing nintendo for making their firstborn drink benzene and pour alcohol into their nes

No. In general, you'd take it back to the store where you bought it if it stopped working and they'd try to help you out.

>when I want to play a game I just pull one out, cool it down with some ice cold beer, and stick it in my NES

Dissolving the patina on the contacts will promote future rust.

>> No.7010802

Isn't a lot of the supposed "connectivity issues" down to the lockout chip more than anything? If you bypass that shit the game is way more likely to load but everytime you get the flashing colors, it's chalked up to the game being too dirty or needing the dust blown out of it, etc.

>> No.7010815

>>7005197
What? The flux should be removed before being shipped. Even the link you posted says so. Removing flux that shouldn't be there isn't going to ruin the board.
