I just beat Heretic and am about to start Hexen. I'm not used to these old-fashioned FPS games having classes like this, are they significantly different or does it not really matter which I choose?

Each of them is viable. They have different weapons and different effects of the flechettes (explosive green flasks).

Prepare for god tier FPS action OP

>> No.700240

Fighter is strongest. Goes fast like Doomyguy and rips 'n tears with melee weapons. The Cleric gets a super powerful weapon way later on, probably the most overpowered in the game but up until that point you're just not a Fighter. And the Mage will never be a Fighter.

>>700240
I'd prefer to shoot shit than punch shit, should I go Cleric?

Also, does it have individual episodes like Doom/Heretic do? I might play through one as each class then end the game playing whichever I had most fun with.

>> No.700283

>>700254
Fighter has 2 melee weapons and 2 ranged ones. Cleric has 1 melee and 3 ranged. Mage has 4 ranged.
It doesn't have separate episodes. Instead it has about 5 "hubs" which are basically super-levels, around 5 levels each interconnected with each other.

>> No.700325

I need to play through the early Doom/Quake games again some day, especially Hexen and Heretic, those were my 2 favorites. Not sure what engine would be 'right' though. There are so many now it's confusing.

>> No.700327

I been playing through Hexen, but I keep getting stuck on parts because I'm an idiot. I'm used to things being much more straightforward in this type of game, so all these puzzles and backtracking is bad for me.

Still an amazing game though, and I'll finish it eventually.

>> No.700330

Hexen is a very enjoyable game that still holds up better than even vanilla doom.

The cleric is kind of OP, especially his final weapon (which also requires no aim). The fighter is the most rewarding imho.

Meh, just go with gzdoom. Being able to look up and down without warping won't ruin the experience for you.

Does it 'just work'? No fuckery with configs etc required?

Hexen 2 > 1

Just get the DOOM Megapack that's always in the doom threads. Has everything pre-config'd and whatnot.

With zdoom/gzdoom you just need hexen.wad and it all works perfectly.

You also get mouselook and high resolution if you toggle those things on. I'd do it, since a more enjoyable experience beats a more "authentic" one imho.

Hexen sucked as hell. Heretic was awesome, Doom was awesome, Strife was awesome, Hexen sucked.

I found them both to be rather tiring. Sure the premise of the game is creative enough, but the combat just puts me to sleep. I don't know what they were thinking when they thought people would like melee attacking enemies to death, especially when each enemy can take over 6 hits to defeat.

I think the game would have worked better as a lumberjack simulator.

>> No.700638

I never really liked Hexen when I played it in the past but now it is actually one of my favorites. I have come to enjoy the open hub levels and puzzles and the 4 weapon limit per class doesn't bother me anymore.

Hexen 2 however sucks. I can't stand the 3D models.

>> No.700642

>>700456
> 6 hits to defeat.

Not as the fighter surely. The cleric's mace needs that many hits but he, as everyone else, gets his second weapon very soon in the game. Besides he has the most overpowered final weapon.

>> No.700643

get that hexen rpg mod if you want something new. I had a blast with it for a long time

>> No.700816

Anyone who says that the Cleric's fourth weapon is the most overpowered is completely wrong and hasn't actually seen the Mage's in action. That thing oneshots anything that's not a boss, has stronger seeking, and in DM it can't be reflected with a disc of repulsion like the Wraithverge's ghosts. The thing about the mage is that he's the slowest and weakest character and his firepower is lame in the beginning. He quickly improves beyond the Cleric or the Fighter's damage capabilities once he gets his third and fourth weapons, though.

Also, if you're playing using G/ZDoom, I highly recommend the Hexercise mod. It really helps make the combat not suck.

>> No.701421

>>700816

The Cleric's 4th weapon is still the strongest IMO. Especially in Deathkings of the Dark Citadel where it's enemies galore and you can just clear a room instantly.

Maybe in original Hexen the Mage's 4th weapon is stronger because it doesn't rely on enemy spam.

>> No.701508

>>701421
Mage's weapon only starts to truly shine in multiplayer. Singleplayer, Cleric's weapon is the best of course.

Have fun playing a fighter in the expansion on the hardest difficulty.
