It was offered to iD Software as an additional megawad for the Final Doom deal, but Jay Wilbur told them "the window of opportunity had closed", so they probably never even looked at it. It wasn't finished by then, so I doubt they could have gotten it finished in time.

I'd almost say, good riddance, because I've never been blueballed so hard by a megawad before. Plutonia puts the thumbscrews on you, and even TNT gives it a good shot, but Perdition's Gate was underwhelming as hell in combat (which I wouldn't mind if it didn't tell me that it was supposed to be super difficult), and for that matter in general level design and concept. You start playing it, and it gives you some impressions that it's going to go to novel and interesting places, but then it pretty much never does, you see glimpses of it, but it's abandoned as soon as you see it. About half of the 32 levels are completely fucking boring and don't need to exist, they're *extremely* bland cookie cutters shoveled into the .wad when Wraith Co bought the rights to it after iD turned it down.

Perhaps if iD had accepted, and the .wad got worked on by some of the Team TNT people instead (mind, Dario and Milo were busy as fuck making Plutonia), perhaps something decent could have come out of it. I can't say I outright hate Perdition's Gate, because it has a bunch of glimmers of some really cool stuff, but at the same time I can never really recommend it either. People say that TNT Evilution has a weak third cour, and it does, but Perdition's Gate just plains gives the fuck up harder than any megawad I've ever seen.

Yeah, -file in Chocolate Doom has the same limitations as -file with the vanilla executable, so only maps, sounds and patches can be replaced without complication. -merge exists in Chocolate to fill the function of various patching utilities from that era, allowing modification of sprites and flats with more modern ease.

Yes. Download a program called Slade. Open the wad in Slade, and have a look. It's surprisingly intuitive to use. I've been copy-pasting sprites and sounds from other sources into my own little mod so I can have more fun when playing TNT and Plutonia. For example, I have the Tommygun from Blood instead of the chaingun (I didn't pull the sprites from Blood, I took them from a mod called Immoral Conduct which took them from Blood), and the Unmaker from Doom64 instead of BFG (it functions the same).
Here's the mod so you can play with it; I think it's really cool. I updated it with some new stuff since I last posted it, like fixing the position of the tommy gun on screen

I've packaged some good old Eriance sprites for vanilla play with the help of the dehextra. Is there a certain way to check if all of my code won't cause desyncs in any of the demos?

Anyone else here enjoying AD's chaos mode? It's a big deal for me because Quake's original maps are still my favorites and AD's new enemy types make them much more challenging.

As mentioned in the previous thread, I took issue with the widowmaker being available in the mode because I felt that it was too useful over other weapons. Apparently one other reason why I find shotguns too useful over nailguns in chaos mode is because the randomizer often replaces small shell boxes with large ones. Also, the mode randomizes armor and powerups and I think it's dumb when a yellow armor gets replaced with a green armor or a biosuit gets replaced with invulnerability.

In addition to removing the weapon upgrades, I ended up removing almost all the randomizing functions except for the monster randomizer. However, I did keep the randomizer which occasionally replaces health packs with enemies because that's fun.

Oof, that would indeed be a lot to implement, and desu it goes against what I want to do. No upgrades or anything for the judge, just pure skill and sometimes a bit of luck. However, for the future there *might* be Lawmaster segments and *maybe* different divisions like Tek and Psi. Heyo, author of 2048 map 11, Retirement Grease, I fixed these 10 imps not teleporting into the level like they should (they couldn't reach the teleport linedefs because there wasn't enough space for their hitboxes to pass over it far enough).

Now, my question is, this is going to make the blue key room even harder, and that's already a real tittytwister of a room, so I want to ask if you're willing to let me soften it slightly, maybe place a couple of stimpacks, or if you prefer it this way. There hasn't been a lot of complaints, but it was pretty tough for me when I first played it, and it's quite a spike in the first third of the levelset.

Alright, while we're at it, here's a couple of other questions on difficulty in 2048, mind these are just one person, but I'd like to hear if any of you guys agree, and I would also like to hear from the author in question for each map:

I'll do it eventually. The key is to just always hang left, like you would if you were in a maze. Eventually, you'll find the exit. That's the main putoff of those mission packs - the level design is just straight up cancerous. If you actually tried to memorize where you've been and where you need to go, it'd drive you crazy because it's impossible. As for pet followers I think you have to play necromancer to get them. Just open the "rpg menu" and browse through each classes skills in order to see what they have. Actually haven't tried playing beyond Hard yet. But it seems to me that regardless of difficulty, the balance of vanilla maps + chaos mode heavily favors the widowmaker. Vanilla maps are all about very close quarter encounters unlike most AD maps and you have a weapon that kills almost as fast as the GL without the risk of self damage.

I enjoyed Doom 4 enough for what it was, I had fun, but I did notice some flaws, particularly how repetitive combat encounter design was. I don't think it's a bad game, but I also don't think it's an excellent game either, there's a lot of things which Classic Doom does better. Mostly they're cosmetic, but the pistol fires a little bit faster in the DeHacked version.

In the Decorate versions, the pistol fires even faster, but must stop to reload every 10 shots, a little like Duke Nukem 3D, the Chaingun can be fired for single shots, the Rocket Launcher fires immediately, and the Plasma can skip its recoil state if you only fire one or two shots or so, also weapons switch faster.

What changed is, I watched some runs on DSDArchive and discovered the infighting tactic by the yellow key. This saves a LOT of ammo so that's how I can get away with using the SSG so much. If you do decide to look at demos from the archive, download more than one for each map; you will not be able to replicate the top run, so it helps to look at a lot of different runs to take ideas from each. It took me roughly 100 tries or something to get this time. I am rusty from not playing Doom as much, and recently tried grinding episode 1 UV-Fast runs but I can't even beat the whole thing anymore. Semi unrelated to your post, but I wonder if anyone will ever try their hands at a Doom 3 mod that tries to overhaul the gameplay to feel more "classic." Not necessarily to make a Doom 1/2 remake, nor try to copy NuDoom, but something that does away with Doom 3's ""survival horror""" style and with more of a focus on fast-paced classic FPS combat with some influences from 1/2 and the reboots. Doom 3 essentially has strafejumping in it, so I'd imagine there'd be some potential for something that plays with the movement somehow. Forcing you to tangle with death knights with the shotgun definitely won't go good with people who already feel Quake had bullet sponge enemies, but it was just a challenge for me.
