Imagine making a mechanic where you have to hold down a button all the time and will destroy pretty much enemy with one shot. It’s really a crappy mechanic and causes a bunch of WUWUWUWU sound effects drowning out the music. At least the charged buster means that you always have at least one weapon that isn't shit. Ideally Capcom would have put good robot master weapons into every game but that's not how things turned out. Rockman 3 would be a lot more fun with a charged buster.

The Mega Buster should be your best weapon though. Shit like MM2 metal blade makes the game kind of stupid because when your special weapons are TOO good they just replace your basic arm cannon and swing the game too far in the other direction. The benefit of the boss weapons is their situational usefulness. Some games are better than others at this but that's more a complaint about what those weapons actually do than it is against the charged buster.

The sprite isn't damaged visually, so it's simply draining a shield bar. Deal means give more so than take, or at least trade. He trades bullets for the shield's integrity of the enemy. Maybe they should make the weaknesses cause them to do more damage/activate a second phase. That way the game keeps some challenge while still letting you benefit from having the right weapon.

the best solution would have been giving the bosses not one but 2 weapon weaknesses, maybe one less damaging that the other, but still doing more than just one extra pixel compared to the charged shot.

maybe even activating 1 or 2 unique pattern attacks once you git them with the right weapon to counterbalance, then and only then the enemy gets into a ''blinking'' state when they dont get damage, but aside form it, make the bosses NOT have blinkin time that long like in 4 to 6, and specially NOT like in the 16/32-bit games.

MM2 and MM3 got it right, so even buster only runs are satisying.

Yeah but Mega Man games drop weapon capsules like candy. The best weapons are considered overpowered because you never do run out of ammo. And if a weapon runs out fast you aren't going to be using it much because you'll want to save it for the boss. Not to mention all the weapons that have weird properties like shields, flashes, ground travel, short range, and all the other things that make them more situational. The arm cannon is your all purpose weapon and the others are supposed to be supplementary.

In practice that stuff almost never gets used outside of weaknesses. Full screen attacks like gravity hold are often useful, thunder beam is powerful enough to break out every now and again, and metal blade can outright replace your main weapon. The 100 other weapons in the series are hardly worth touching. Rockman 4 Minus Infinity has more useful special weapons than every official classic series game combined.

Later games corrected for this a bit by making weapons useful for accessing items or alternate routes giving them some more varied application. I think what happens though for most people is you get so good at the games that changing weapons is more of a chore than just barreling through a stage with the arm cannon. "Sure, I can switch to Shadow Blade to take out that Hammer Joe but I know the timing so fuck it I'll just shoot him."
