Obvious:
>Super Mario 64
>Mario Kart 64
>Ocarina of Time & Master Quest
>Majora's Mask
>Smash
>Goldeneye
>Banjo and Conker

(Debatably) More obscure must-plays:
>Doom 64, Quake & Quake II
>Duke Nukem 3D
>Perfect Dark
>Shadows of the Empire
>Toy Story 2
>Pilotwings
>Indiana Jones
>LEGO Racers
>Evangelion (JP only but you only need to know the controls)

Also, OP: Get a flashcart rather than cartridge collecting, it'll save you big bucks and you can load romhacks and emulate NES games too in addition to having literally every N64 game of every region ever. I recommend the ED64+. Goes about $60 on Ebay, worth every penny. Make sure you have an Expansion Pak, most romhacks require it.

Besides Sin & Punishment? Virtual Pro Wrestling 2. Even if you’re not a wrestling fan, I think you would like it. There are no complex inputs or ideas. It’s very simple. Your fighting spirit meter start out at green. The more moves you do, the higher the meter goes. Once it’s high enough, you can do your special finishing move. The dynamics of the spirit meter make the game. It’s obviously very reminiscent of pro wrestling: a wrestler performs well, the opponent makes a comeback and he’s back at square one. That’s how the meter translates that experience. One move from the opponent can fuck up your momentum and gain on you. The amount of moves and move options in the game are incredible, but nowhere near daunting for anyone unfamiliar. Now if you were a casual fan of 90’s wrestling, you may recognize some names despite most of the roster being Japanese. Vader, Andre the Giant, Kamala, Ultimo Dragon and even MMA/boxing legends like Rickson Gracie and Muhammad Ali are in it. The game also has an MMA mode, which is similar enough to the wrestling, but you can set your own rules, if you’re into that. I shill this game any chance I get. It’s great and simple, but a lot of depth.

I wouldn't say it's a game that "plays pretty well", but it's still the only Evangelion game that feels like a proper "Evangelion: The Video Game" in the sense that it faithfully recreates the original material with great art direction and amazing visuals. It's definitely recommended for Evangelion fans.

Why? The cart is just a bunch of ROM chips to begin with, I can't understand being "against" flashcarts in any way. The only negative is you have to wait 20 seconds or so to copy the game off the SD, but it'd take you that long to swap carts if you didn't have them loose.

I own chink clones of most of the flashcarts, they work just as well as whatever they're a copy of. Seems silly to favor supporting some east european over a chink, especially when he isn't even slightly competitive in terms of pricing.

>> No.6970252

I'm not sure that the import scene for the n64 is even any good. The most interesting import only stuff I know about is the first Animal Crossing, and the N64 DD games which I highly recommend if you're willing to shell out $1000. If you do get a DD I recommend the F-Zero X Expansion Kit, Doshin the Giant, and Doshin the Giant's far more obscure companion game, Kyojin no Doshin Kaihou Sensen Chibikko Chikko Daishuugou. The Mario Artist games are also very fun as they're basically the direct sequel to Mario Paint we never got, but these are big spender items since you need N64 mice to get the best experience (I say that because drawing with an analog stick is so much shittier, especially on a stick as fucked as the N64's)
There's also a train simulator game called Densha De Go! 64 you can get that's compatible with a train controller that mimics the controls of an actual train as well as being the second of two titles across the whole N64 library to support the mic. You don't need either to play the game but I assume playing with both is going to offer a better, more immersive experience and thankfully it's not too expensive to get the cart on its own, hovering at around $25-$30 CIB. Prices only really start cranking the heat up when the train controller gets involved.

Densha de go on the N64 is a pretty trash port, and all the games have pretty decent PC versions, and you can even plug in the controllers with an adapter. You do lose the mic functionality, but it's a waste of time anyway.

I've played every tennis games I can find. From pong, to nes and snes tennis, from the abysmal virtua tennis, to the great top spin series on various consoles and on pc. This is by far the most satisfying, challenging, and the most replayable game the N64 has to offer. Stick with me for a moment: First of all, in order to experience the masterpiece, you will have to put hours into it. Firstly, every player needs an avatar. Be sure to minmax the stats. Most important are maximum forehand, maximum serve and maximum player speed. Then, every player needs to win against the ai in all of the four featured "grand slam" tournaments, and equip the gear the wins of these tournaments grant you. That is by far the best gear, and to be honest, the only gear worth equipping. Winning these tournaments is incredibly easy, since the ai is very very bad. Alas, for every avatar, this means half an hour of tedious work in order to get the gear - if you win every match, and every point, that is. But its really a piece of cake. With a little bit of training, you get so good that you score an ace on every serve, and a return-ace on every return - against the ai. The game shines, and is on top of all other tennis games, when played couch multiplayer. I have spent hundreds of hours on that. The skill ceiling is stellar. This is the only tennis game that I know of, which features true analogue aiming, meaning that just as in real life, you can aim any ball anywhere on the court - or off the court for that matter... even the direction and intensity of spin is controllable. Any ball where you tilt the analogue stick all the way to one side, the ball will most likely be off court. You can even do around-the-net shots, aiming off the court but spinning the ball in.

It's actually very different from the DC version (IMO, the original is even better), at any rate, true Bangai-O fans enjoy both.
