Why aren't more people doing serious academic research and documentaries on retro gaming like Jeremt Parish in his books and 'Works' video series? It seems like a academic field that is ripe for this, as most coverage is the peepee poopoo unserious entertainment type. Why?

If you're unfamiliar, this kind of stuff is what I mean:
https://www.fangamer.com/products/nes-works-volume-i-1985

And its video supplements:
https://.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLd3vJYdenHKEWFJLtBrgf09ICsNLb2u7Q

The series is his doing on Metroidvanias is also an excellent example of the type of thing I mean:

>REEEEE MUH E-CELEBS
This thread isn't about Parish specifically but his works are the best example of this. Plus the guy has like 50k subscribers and just does YT on the side, he's far from an e-Celeb
>HE ISNT AN ACADEMIC, HE CANT EVEN BEAT GHOSTS N GOBLINS
OK, GnG sperg. Skill at one game doesn't invalidate ones works on retro gaming.
>HE JUST READS MUH WIKIPEDIA ARTICLES
No, he doesn't, he does his own research and speaks/reads Japanese. Some of the games he has covered don't even have Wikipedia articles. He is covering every game released in NA for NES and other systems in his Works series in order of release.

Is there anyone out there doing this kind of thing to document the rich history of the now retro era of gaming?

>he does his own research and speaks/reads Japanese.
He’s not even in games press anymore. He doesn’t read or speak Japanese. He doesn’t have any more access to information than you or I (basic wikipedia information). For example, he frequently sites shmuplations because he doesn’t have the skill to translate or research content himself. Just because someone positions themself as an authority on something, doesn’t mean they are. Stop shilling for this faggot.

No, but he doesn’t anymore either. Even during his time at 1up he had maybe a handful of interviews with Japanese developers, and they hardly went into depth about their past works. If he was interviewing anyone of note, the main topic would be about their current projects, which is the point of the interview. To promote current projects. And people are constantly doing what he does, have you been on youtube? There are countless “gaming historian” channels. You’re the one making shit up. Go try to have a conversation with him and Japanese and tell me how far you get.

I think Leonard Herman may have been one of the earliest attempting to record history of video games. I had a copy of his Phoenix book (first published in '94) which was very thorough (and dry) and talked about a lot of the for me unknown consoles before the Atari video game burial. But I don't remember how academic he was or if he cited sources or anything like that and I don't have it here to check now.

Each episode is like a mini documentary about the development history of various classic games. There's also the above mention where he called a game developed by Yuji Naka evil. Since I don't listen to Retronauts I can't give you a direct citation, but I'm sure some other anon can.

Doesn't invalidate Parcuck being wrong about Halo specifically taking influence from Legends. Unless he can cite where that's been said, in likelihood Bungie got the idea themselves after playtesting and trying adjust an FPS for playing on console.

Not by Bungie, and after Marathon came out, which was made Bungie, the makers of Halo, and before that Marathon in 1994. Legends came out in 1997, and was made by Capcom. Legends was not made by Bungie.

It wasn't a game developed by Bungie, which had developed the Marathon games and would go on to develop Halo. Now, if the elements common to both Halo AND Marathon could be derived from another game (aside from the popularizers of the genre that would have been DOOM, Wolf3D and Duke Nukem) that would be interesting, but it sure as shit wouldn't have been MML.

So is this thread the last means of Parish and his gaggle of faggots trying to shill their shit here now that Retrocucks in behind a paywall?
>>6978471
No, they were in a rapidly expanding industry where people were influenced by things that other people weren't aware of. Bungie were primarily a mac and PC developer before Halo, and were more entrenched in that sector of the industry than whatever came out on consoles. And MML wasn't the first game with regenerating shields.

Bob, please stay on Twitter.

>> No.6978481

>>6978471
It's true, they didn't, but it's far more likely that they would have carried forth elements from the previous games that they had developed instead of some other game from another developer. Now, as I have said, if you can identify elements in Halo that were directly from MML (and OTHER games, especially in the FPS genre, came out between Marathon and Halo), that would be interesting, but the same shield stuff was in Marathon, which had been developed by the same studio in the mid 90s; if we're taking this tack of argument, then naturally, it would be more likely that MML took the ability from Marathon, and not the other way around since, after all, it was developed and released later.
(I consider this to be highly unlikely and more likely Capcom took it from other games that had been developed by Capcom, but whatever; regenerating shields aren't exactly a rare trope in vidya.)

Most retro research is bullshit. The real hard pill to swallow is the majority of atari games were, in fact, not made by the programmers credited. Most were farmed out to japan by the "creators" where they could ultimately take all the credit stateside. That and pacman and dk clones had nothing to do with the videogame crash but more to do with paying celebrity directors/producers to create bullshit games that no one wanted to play.

What you listed is not "academic research". It's "research" only in the sense that it fits the literal definition, which research is, by its very definition, doing a investigation or experiment of materials and sources in order to draw new facts or conclusions and that is already a high bar that in my mind, nothing other than historical study of retro gaming out of what retro gaming is warrants having this definition apply.
Academic research has a proper definition, which involved educational institutions like universities most of the time. You can not string the fact that the research in retro gaming is academic in some sense where it is scholarly or done in a similar manner as a university to say it's academic research. The key differentiator between regular old research and academic research is the fact that peer review is a key factor and differentiator which academia has built one of its foundations for how research is done. Whatever is done here technically is creation of sources of information at best, usually secondary, which can later be used as research.

Even if you want to call it academic research, it has to meet criteria. First off, what institution that has any credibility or interest want to partner up with the people mentioned or people involved in this field? Universities don't have anything for retro gaming in their history departments, But let's assume an institution is interested. Then the question becomes how does the research get funding for practical and credibility purposes? Academia in general these days as it pertains to research only care about things that will net the institutions and individuals grants and funding from mostly governments and industry. And there, these sources want research in cutting edge topics and history let alone retro gaming is not that. So there's no way to really get funding practically for this at all. And the question of peer review... Very easy to see why it's not academic research per definition.
