Problem with shmups is the genre is dead and not innovating, maybe 5-10 shmups will be appealing to most players to clear. Once you clear them the genre is dead and you move on. Someone should make a massive multiplayer game where Shmupfags and Jarpigs fight each other in a huge war.
Maybe let it have duels like Senko no Ronde where the shmupfags play it like a regular shmup requiring skill and memorization while the jarpigs have to grind and level up their character's AI fighting weaker AI-controlled enemies. Both sides should have permadeath so the jarpigs have to restart their character as level 1 when they die. The game wouldn't need a story the drama is already there in the hate between the two sides.

how about this:
The jarpigs level up their "shmup bosses" by fighting weaker enemies. The fights would work like a regular Active Time Battle jrpg for them where they have a health bar and can pick a preset bullet pattern from a list or pick attacks where they send drones in formations like picking a "shmup game level" for their enemy. And when they level up they can unlock new bullet patterns and "levels" for their opponent to play. But it's all preset bullet patterns and attack waves that the shmupfags can practice beforehand. But the jarpigs get to decide on the next pattern wave when they fight, trying to figure out the shmupfags weakness.

The discords arent much better. Except maybe gus's. You are better off just streaming and posting vids and then reaching out to those who do the same. Look around on twitter for people posting images and videos of their runs. First step is finding actual players. Discord will just get you a bunch of parroted recs from people who don't even play.

Why do these games feel so fucking miserable and lifeless? Like just playing them for 15 minutes makes me want to kill myself. A lot of this is bait but it's partially true. The problem is everyone is playing different shmups and different modes at different ability levels. We have different goals too.
I'm not going to waste 1 hour watching a game I have little interest in playing. A good player gets 550 million instead of 500 million but it doesn't mean much to me.
