Since the GBA is not considered retro

What is your general opinion on it and its library?

>> No.6965414

I meant is considered Retro
Made a typo

>> No.6965417

Terrible library just by the numbers, but there’s still plenty of good games for it. The gba is probably the best handheld I’ve ever used though, and definitely the high water mark for nintendo’s portable consoles. All their other stuff has those sharp edges and rectangle design that is hard for adult hands to use.

Is psp, and nds retro now? they came out before 2007

>> No.6965450

I honestly don't think I've ever played a GBA game and been like "this is a good game". It has a large library of mediocre, playable games. Even the ports of good games to the GBA somehow just ended up being meh.

Also, something about the art style used in so many GBA games, they just look hideous to me. You know what I mean, that Golden Sun look.

Have you played wario land 4? It’s like the only one I’ve played but I am stunned by how good of a game it is. The only downside is it’s rather easy, but there is a hard mode I haven’t played yet. It’s got this level based metroidvania feel I don’t think I’ve ever seen replicated anywhere else

>Also, something about the art style used in so many GBA games, they just look hideous to me. You know what I mean, that Golden Sun look.

about 2/3rds of the library are just 3d models rendered at low resolution to "look like" sprite work and then ultra saturated because the screen was shit

3. GBA

4. I'm not sure, Vita maybe?

I think it's a great system, that gets underappreciated because people just look at all the remakes, ports and models and are dismissive of a truly fantastc library of original games. It's kinda like the Wii in that regard, a sales juggernaut that people don't give the credit it's due.

It came out after 2D "died" and before it started to come back, so devs didn't take it seriously and treated it as a dumping ground for the "grandma goes birthday shopping" market, barely-functional ports, and copy-pasted franchise sequels. Trash like Mortal Kombat Advance or the Earthworm Jim port etc etc never would have happened on a real console, there was no quality control at all. Being 2D was considered shit and obsolete, so lots of games tried to LARP as 3D with horrible prerendered graphics. It has Nincels' favorite 3rd party franchises like Mega Man and Castlevania, but those are still pretty much thrown-together-in-15-minutes soulless trash that pale compared to the real entries in those series. It's not just a matter of having a retarded trash-to-quality ratio, even the "good" games are mediocre, and the four or five ports that weren't half-assed still have shitty screen resolution and sound quality.

Also, it's not retro.

>> No.6966278

Not a bad library! Great Pokémon games (plus a sequel to my favorite Pokémon spinoff that has seemingly been forgotten, Pinball), plus many other good platformers and RPGs.

I will say that the original GBA model's screen kinda sucked, but it did look good in sunny areas.

I've never dived into it. I picked one up to play a couple of SNES ports because the concept of portable SNES was cool. Some ports were great, like Rock and Roll Racing. I never owned the GBA itself, I played my games through the DS, so I remember when I tried out a friends' OG model GBA for the first time, I was a bit surprised that it was like the GB/GBC and lacked a backlight. Years later and I still want to know what the hell they were thinking? The GB Light came out 3 years before, and the Game Gear and Lynx were around 10 years old at the time of the GBAs release. It was the next generation of handheld gaming, there was no excuse for the lack of it. Even with the SP model that came out a few years later, devs still had to accommodate those with the OG model and brighten up the colors to the point where some games looked pastel.
The console's library was mostly shovelware, like most libraries, but it did have some pretty fun games
>Mario Advance ports
>Zelda Minish Cap
>Kirby Nightmare In Dreamland and Magic Mirror
>Metroid Zero Mission and Fusion

Nintendo makes a profit on their handhelds, that is why they are still in business. Backlight was expensive and not yet expected by consumers, so they didn't include it. No one gave a shit back then. Gameboy was nearly impossible to see without proper lighting, and Gamegear was nearly impossible to see under any condition.

probably cost related. idk how it works but maybe they couldn't include a backlight with the current tech at a price that would work for the customer at that point.
It also could be that the backlight was too power hungry and it would eat through batteries too quickly. That might be why they first included it with the recharchable model.
Or they just intentionally specced it low because they know nintenkiddies will buy anything new they come up with. So better to sell one customer 2 different GBAs instead of 1.

Not even a boomer. I loved all the other WL games and was excited to try 4 after all the praise that'd been heaped on it.

What a disappointment. The artsyle changed from stylish to grotesque and ugly and the music changed from catchy and melodic to random noise. I also hated having to repeat a level because I missed one short chance to get an item, e.g. the CD in the Mysterious Factory. It would've been much better if they'd put a checkpoint by the frog statue like Shake It did.

people dont give credit circle of the moon for what it did because it didnt compare to SotN, but for what it was, it was quite good if a bit humble, HoD tried to be GBA's SotN and it ended it just being discount SotN, and it suffer a lot from it, but Aria of Sorrow was pretty damn good, they finally nailed it with the 3rd one.

In fairness, what hurts HoD was the bright saturation, but with shaders, and contrast/brightness correction it does look decent.

My favorites were the 2 Kirby games on there, the Densetsu no Stafy trilogy, Mario vs. Donkey Kong, any Bomberman game on there (well, mostly Tournament, but also the first Jetters title), the Mario Advance series (mostly Advance 3 and 4 though), and Astro Boy: Omega Factor.

Not really. I imported them between 7-9 years ago, and they're pretty straightforward platformers. There were some parts, especially in 2, there were trial and error. Like sometimes I forgot to talk to a certain NPC or forgot to do something, but I managed to 100% all three titles. I heard there is a fan-translation for 1, but that's it for now. You definitely need a guide for 4 (on DS) if you ever play that one, especially the post-game.

Some anon told me oriental blue is there, I also recently started playing buldar's gate, etc, not all are there. Some I'm downloading I'm hating, such as the gba's wing commander, it's music makes me want to die. They knew this however, you can turn it off.
