Comical Action Game. It's what Japs call fixed-screen kill-all-the-enemies-to-advance platformers, for some reason.

I hate floors 30 to 40 of this game because most of the time you have to choice between jumping in a pit you cant get off, or wait for the monster to come out that takes too long and you end losing to the pumpkin. Truly designed to eat quarters.
I think Snow bros 2 is just better

I just call them snow bros clones. Since snow bros was unique and different enough from bubble bobble to be its own genre.

But not at all? People here are posting old arcade panflets like if they can serve as a source for this (which could never be the case; think about it), when they're just parroting the Wikipedia.

>for some reason
it's because they're not really platformers (there is "platforming", but that's not really the focus, it's moreso just a place to fight enemies in), and usually have a very cartoony art direction with tons of wacky or comedic/comical character designs.

Isn't this the game with the weird character selection screen? Like, the characters have weird realistic portraits?

>> No.6973239

>>6972776
If "platforming" is not "the focus" of the Bubble Bobble series in your eyes then what is. You even create "platforms" with your own projectiles, for fuck's fuck. Read: there's no reason because "comical action" never ever was used to name any "genre". "Platformer" is never used in Japan either, by the way, so your answer fails again. If anything, they use "jump action [games]" for both, the Mario-likes and the Super Mario-likes, though it's usual to find "athletic action" for the latter. They're not so obsessed with making artificial categories for everything, anyway.

>>6972781
I've learnt to force my eyes not to bleed when I read once and again utter crap such as "character action", "shmup" or "metroidvania" so I don't really care how you or the illiterate who posted it on the Wikipedia call these games, I'm just illustrating that the Japanese never use "comical action" as stated and that the poster is full of shit.

>>6972783

"Comical action game" it is, then. Huzzah!
