Fucking FINALLY! I beat TnT. I did it. Mt. Pain was honestly pretty fun up until that final bit with the firing squad and lava floor; definitely needed more health kits scattered throughout.
Overall, I'd say it's too fucking long in most places, and a lot of maps just don't stand out from each other. 5/10 wouldn't replay the full WAD.

Start off playing his maps on skill 1 if you want to play them saveless. Remember that he endorses making HMP (skill 3) the default difficulty and UV as an extra challenge, so his maps on skill 1 are still challenging for most people

I played Magnolia saveless on skill 1 and I was having fun but I got bored because of how unclear the progression is and I was wandering around lost for like 15 minutes. I beat map02 of Swim with the Whales pistol-starts no-saves on skill 1 as well and it was fun; I haven't gone back because I was/am in the middle of other playthroughs, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to play one more map right now

Maybe a Specialized model using existing "accurate" renditions and the original as source to train it may work.
Besides, this kinda looks better than the nvidia upscale made by doomworld needing only a few edits, but it ended 1:1 accurate with the original clay model and textures made by adrian.

I'll at least do some episode runs on hard. I've done a deathless episode 1 run so far with 100% secrets after looking up where the secrets are and after learning some good routes from the Quake Done Quick 100% video; I missed some individual monsters along the way. I was originally planning a shotgun-starts playthrough but that abruptly ended on E2M6 where you don't even get a nailgun so I went back and did a continuous playthrough saving only once at the start of each map. I thought the mission packs would be the same so I started a continuous playthrough of mission pack 1 but it seems you get most weapons on every map so I'll go back and replay the levels with shotgun starts. Pic related is a really good level. I never realized just how good the original soundtrack was until I started playing hipnotic; I listened to the original soundtrack all through base Quake 1 but for hipnotic I started muting the music and listening to some dungeon synth:

Hitscanners can be obnoxious but it depends on how they're designed. DOOM's hitscanners are completely fine because they have a windup, but something like Shadow Warrior's/Blood's hitscanners are obnoxious because they fire upon you almost instantly.

When I say windup I mean the pre-firing frames. When a DOOM chaingunner is ready to fire there is a very slight pause; if gives you a crucial split second to either retreat or fire if taken aback, which can stop you from taking damage altogether. I've beaten Shadow Warrior on Who Wants Wang and enjoyed my time, and I think these hitscanners can be adapted to, but I greatly prefer hitscanners to have those pre-firing frames so you have the ability to react to them without taking unavoidable damage; if you prefer throwing grenades/dynamite around corners every time you're about to enter a new area good on you, I think that can be fun, but I have my preference.

Get the sourceport vkQuake or Quakespasm Spiked for the FPS limit removal. Play the first game, the mission packs Scourge of Armagon and Dissolution of Eternity. After that, check out Quoth mods/mappacks like Warpspasm, Contract Revoked, and funcjam9. Then tangle with the megamod, some say it should be considered a standalone shooter at this point, Arcane Dimensions.

Get Quake Injector, a throughline to the Quake mapping repository quaddicted.com. Allows you to instantly click on and install just about everything quaddicted is hosting. Do not do it for Arcanum, it's broken and they have yet to fix it.

Lastly, set your gamma to 1.2, and contrast to 1.5. It makes the colors pop in a great way. I'll always thank one anon for posting in these threads about those settings a year or so ago. Will post screenshots.

Shadows Of Chronos and Scourge Of Viscerus are the best Hexen wads ever imo, both vanilla with great level design. Curse Of The Lost Gods is cool if you can handle some harsh difficulty. So I've been thinking about that whole map competition thingy. Obviously it would need to happen AFTER 500ml is done. So at some point after the November 10 deadline.

However, assuming we start the 11th at the latest, that means the competition might bleed into December, and even with the 'rona I assume most people would be busy with work/family, so I'm questioning if that would be wise.

Alright, since I now have models to properly work with, I decided to overhaul the rapid fire mode.
It will now not be full-auto anymore, but have a burst fire mode with random vertical spread; I also noticed that simply skipping regular frames of semi look like ass here, so I'll make a slightly different set of frames for it.

Demo recordings and demo playback. The entire point with PrBoom+ is to be a sourceport which can record and play back demos in Vanilla, Boom, MBF, and with various settings for all of these, also of course playing Vanilla, Boom, and MBF format content. Even GzDoom has settings for complevels, it's just it doesn't tend to be relevant to mess with it beyond personal preference, since GzDoom sacrifices any demo compatibility to speak about to focus more on advanced modding features.

There's an improved version of PrBoom+ being made, partially because it needs fixes, but mainly because making it compatible with an upgraded type of MAPINFO (which it would then share with other sourceports, such as GzDoom and Eternity) would be *extremely* practical for map makers. This however has to be done while retaining demo compatibility, because PrBoom+ is one of the most popular sourceports for speedrunners, and Doom does have a pretty sizeable speedrunning scene that goes all the way back to 1993.

I remember when his doom review was first posted there was a huge shitstorm here and the general counter seemed to be some really weird strawmanning like making up fake quotes from the review.

One thing that I think icy missed is the effect that map-makers had one the perception of the game. Modders have this inflated ego because they see themself as 'the real game designers' and this sense of importaince bleeds over from the modders to the rest of the community. Modders rarely design actual assets, they just rearrange pre-made sprites and polys and focus on mechanics. That also bleeds over and soon the whole community is so focused on mechanics that everything else gets disregarded, and not even the FULL set of mechanics but only the platform, power up, and enemy placement since thats what modders focus on.

I was hoping that by uploading in 320x200, the video would load quickly for people with laggy internet (like me), and it would still look crisp like in regular DOSBox in fullscreen mode. It bothers me that I have to upload in 1080p for low-resolution videos.

I tried upscaling the 320x200 video into 1280x960 (multiply by 4, then +20% vertical stretch for aspect ratio correction) but it still comes out blurry. I used a program called Shotcut. Anyone know how to simply multiply the pixels like with integer scaling?

I'm glad you liked it, anon. It's some of the best architecture I've seen in Doom wads, and it's all stock Doom 1 textures. You can tell the mapper is very good

I use mods that are completely demo-friendly, meaning you can record with the mods on, and someone else can replay the demos in vanilla DOS Doom with no mods and the demos won't desync, or you can download any old demo and put the mods on and the demos won't desync. The mods are Vanilla Smooth Weapons (the extra animation frames; my favorite is the spinning chaingun barrels. I think the plasma rifle looks janky as fuck in this mod but I can overlook that), PerK's Hi-Res Sound Effects (original Doom sounds but higher quality; the only sound PerK got wrong is the death sound, which you can remove from the mod with Slade), and Doom Sprite Fix (minor sprite fixes, such as the cyberdemon no longer moves off-center when firing). Doom Sprite Fix also has an optional Dehacked file which has additional fixes which can only be implemented with dehacked, such as the zombieman firing frame is now bright just like the shotgunners, and the cyberdemon firing frame is also full-bright - this has the added benefit of making cyberdemon rockets much easier to dodge since he lights up during his firing frame.
Vanilla Smooth Weapons is completely vanilla compatible, meaning it works with Chocolate Doom, and it works with the original DOS executable, though you need to patch the executable using Dehacked. Doom Sprite Fix requires a limit-removing port, and PerK's Hi-Res SFX is vanilla-compatible as well I think (can't remember if it runs in DOS) but I think the hi-res sounds clash with the pixelated graphics when playing in Chocolate Doom or DOS

Looks like the map layout is shaping up well but it looks very easy right now. I've got some quick ideas how to improve your map Anon.

* Place a weak monster on the lower crate at 0:04 and make the second Former Sargent react to sound.
* The first door switch opens a monster closet with Pinkies at the opposite end.
* Have the Icon of Sin face at 0:35 teleport in a couple of Hell Knights that are triggered by walking close to the door. That way the player likely will fight their way through them instead.
* To improve the Archvile fight, have the blinking light hall at 1:08 filled with resurrectable bodies instead of using decorations (basically by using crushers to detonate barrels that push corpses into teleporters). Have the Archvile be activated by sound with a fast door like the imp in Entryway. Add a couple mid-tier monsters in nearby monster closets (e.g. Chaingunners, Revenants or Spectres) that come out earlier so the player moves back into the hallway, and have the Archvile be alerted by sound.

You can use PerK's Hi-Res SFX with anything provided you load the SFX mod before the map so that the custom map's sounds will override anything it needs to

I like the old 1990's dungeon synth tapes because it's so obscure and romantic (not in the love sense of the word but as in idealized reality); I imagine the people making this music originally made it to play Dungeons and Dragons to, hence the name. Q1 maps suffers from what id came to suffer after Doom 2, Maps made to show the wonders of the engine instead of good level design, some are great because Mcgee, petersen and romero carried out, but the Enemy placement and difficulty feels off.
EP4 is a good example of it, mainly because of the slimes.

As for weapons, use the Mjolnir for large packs of weaker enemies, the laser to mow down everything beefy or fucking vores.
