16 Bit Sensation

Just wanted to recommend this manga. It's about PC game development in Japan in the 90's (starting in 92), dramatised fiction but loosely based on the personal experiences of Mitsumi Misato and Amazuyu Tatsuki. There are also essays about how things were back then in between chapters. Very interesting.

Also some retard on /v/ was claiming a month or two ago that back then they could totally just scan pictures into computers and use Photoshop to convert them to pixel art. According to this what Japanese artists did back then was draw the line art on clear plastic sheets, tape them to the monitors, and then draw the pixel art below. So fuck that guy.

For example here's one about the influence Evangelion had.

It's really more of those "learn about X through manga" things than an actual manga, but all the more interesting thanks to it.

Distribution chain

Some of the stuff in this is things that everyone already knows (stuff about Doukyuusei or Evangelion) but there's also a lot of topics that nobody talks about anymore like how Gainax used to be a major player and pioneer in PC games before Evangelion happened, how some computer hardware stores in Japan just made their own low budget game development studios, pre-2channel internet forums, that kind of thing.

I loved Doukyuusei but didn't really enjoy Doukyuusei 2 all that much
The player-character's motivation and behavior didn't make as much sense as the first game, and the system that had been fun exploration in the first game got turned into tedious trial-and-error in the second game
Also the girls were less connected with each other and more just a collection of individual stories, so the feel of participating in a large interwoven set of events was weaker
But it seems like I'm the only one who feels this way

I highly recommend Genshiken — both the anime and the manga.

It's about a University club named "The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture." One of the people in the club likes video games, particularly fighting games like Guilty Gear.

Another member of the club is really into cosplaying, and you can see her cosplaying Jam Kuradoberi from Guilty Gear in this picture.

It's a 10/10 anime and a 10/10 manga. Just don't read or watch Genshiken Nidaime because they got rid of all the characters and introduced a fucking degenerate faggot tranny.

That's what you can accomplish with modern tools which is an argument against the supposed effort required for modern pixel art and against how indie devs cry out how hard it is.
Without tools like that, it's no surprise Japanese artists did the analog effort to draw line art and tape on monitors before drawing in their preferred tools available at the time. There was specialized machines though, like Sega's Digitizer machines if you worked for a big enough company that produced video games at a large enough scale.
