Is it true that old retro games used to be $5 each or is that a boomer meme?

>> No.6959165

>>6959157
Many of them were depending on where you looked, but it all changed by the late 2000's when retro gaming blew up because of ecelebs and other stupid shit.

Some games were always really expensive though, particularly RPG's. FFVII used was frequently like 60-70 bucks before it was re-released on PSN in 2009.

>> No.6959190

FFS stupid question you just did your bit to make zoomers look even more clueless than they are.
Ofc they were cheap
How much are PS3 games Wii and 360 games?

>> No.6959203

Ahhh, the good old days where you could find cheap retro vidya at yard sales, flea markets and thrift stores.
Nowadays every asshole has the internet in their pocket and can quickly search up some inflated price on google then declare "I know what I have". Even fucking thrift stores like Goodwill set up online shops and then hold back the video games from the brick and mortar stores.

>> No.6959210

>> No.6959297

>> No.6959306

I just found Goodwill’s online shopping site. Eh, at least it’s a secondary auction spot and the prices are reasonable. Only problem is whether or not to trust the quality/condition.

>> No.6959325

>>6959306
Shopgoodwill? It's decent, but yeah the quality is a crapshoot. It seems like it's a good step below ebay prices though which is nice, especially for some of the more niche stuff.

Though I will say ebay does really protect the buyer. I bought a game that was clearly resurfaced to shit and wouldn't play, and the seller dug their heals in and refused to offer a refund until I got ebay involved.

Honestly the two things I go to the most these days, (especially since I don't care about CIB stuff) is ebay but only in the very early morning (just so you don't compete with a bunch of people) and then Gamestop's website has actually been pretty good to me. If you install the browser plugin Honey theres usually a pretty deep coupon code so usually you end up paying below pricecharting values for stuff, the biggest catch is it takes ages for them to ship you your game and I've heard horror stories of people getting the wrong game in the right case or whatever, but for me they've been a solid option.

>> No.6959340

>>6959157
Yes. Generally speaking, NES games could be bought from Electronics Boutique or Babbage’s for $5 to $10 (even less if it was common stuff like Top Gun) until roughly 2006 - 2007. Prices were still fairly reasonable until 2013, when the retro boom really took off.

>> No.6959341

>>6959241
This cycle is pretty much constant:

>game comes out at MSRP
>game hits discounts, sales, then clearance
>finally disappears from shelves somewhere along the line (some odd years later or even just months for smalltime games)
>price steadily goes down as the give a fuck factor decreases
>reaches lowest give a fuck factor around 10 years of age (so right now, the lowest give a fucks would be stuff like most DS games, PS3 games (imagine believing the PS3 had games), and 360 right around the kinect era (aka when they went to shit)
>somewhere around 15-20 years of age, shit gets "rediscovered" which means the kids who sold their kiddie stuff when they moved out of mom's house now have a job and want to buy back their childhoods
>this is when the prices go up for shit, sometimes in big ways

tl;dr buy shit when it's around 10 years old and sell when it's around 20 years old, if you want to only make money off of everything you buy that is

Note that this isn't perfect; Some games will become more valuable (ie. God Hand became valuable due to people realizing how good it was) or some games will lose value due to the game itself not being needed to play it (so many people hacked their wii to play wii games for free that frankly, I don't think anyone will ever pay top dollar for wii games except for collectors hunting the rarest games, good luck getting anyone to care about your copy of NSMB Wii).

If you want to play games and not spend a lot of money then just buy a wii and find a tube TV somewhere. That system has plenty of good emulators. Buying carts just to play the games they contain is nonsense. Sure, it's how it was in the day, but it's also for the most part just a sales system. You bought carts because they were sold to you. In modern days that makes about as much sense as buying individual roms on a USB stick. You basically just buy it for the shape of the cart and the label on the front.

I thought the same when someone offered to sell me NES Bonk's Adventure for 40, seemed way too high.

It's true, I do some ebay reselling as just like a side hustle and I virtually never find video games, and when I do they're usually too expensive to bother trying to resell.
It's funny because the video games are super picked over but it's very easy to find other stuff to resell, like VCRs, sports stuff, and old kitschy stuff is usually super easy to flip.

Yes, and Gamestop in the US used to be super cheap for old games. Back then it did not seem like anyone was collecting them. Most NES games were $0.99-2.99. I do remember seeing a SNES game for $20 and thinking how ridiculous of a price it was. A local shop also sold NES games in a 3-for-$5 deal.

This sounds about right. 2013 was around when I stopped buying retro games. I've picked up maybe 5-10 since then and it was generally like 20 bucks for something that really should have been 5. So 7th gen (360/Wii/PS3) started in 2006 and most of the games weren't out until a few years later, which puts us at about exactly 10 years. So I should start buying 7th gen games, even if they didn't drop to the legendary $5 that SNES games were, before the 15 year mark comes and they all go up as high or higher than they came out for?

The real funny part for me is that idiots buying disks and carts from my collection were what funded my buying flashcarts and ODEs to replace them all. Buying old carts from a guy who's hoarded them for years isn't the only way to play games. That's been my experience. I'd only focus on what you think you might actually want to play and can reasonably store without much hassle. There's no reason to acquire plastic that's worthless to you personally, unless your goal is to hodl and sell them to pay for other shit down the road. Back in the ps1/2/cube days a loooot of people really didn't know how or cared about taking care of their games.
I don't mind too much about getting a loose copy of an snes game because I know the worst thing to happen is needing to replace the battery.
A ps1 game is easily destroyed by a few scratches in bad places or by some dipshit kid using it as a coaster or frisbee.
Even I'm not innocent of handling them badly back in the day when I was a kid.

FF7 is a game that will always be common just because of the sheer amount it sold.
Valkyrie Profile on the other hand was an already rare game and got discovered after production stopped, along with poor handling of existing copies you have some serious bullshit pricing.

Haven't stopped by there at all this year so I dont know if that's changed, but I'd imagine not. Should be real, it's the Funcoland price listings you could get in store back when they existed. Google "funcoland price sheet" and look at images and you'll find more than a few scans of old Funcoland price listings. You used to be able to buy SMB/Duck Hunt for 10 cents. 7 years ago I used to go into Savers and just grab PS2s for 5 bucks each. Right now it's Wii and 360 that are piss cheap. Yeah games for any particular system are always dirt cheap in the first five or so years of that system becoming outmoded. There's several factors at work here for why retro gets expensive, but basically it's because so many people are re-engaging with retro stuff because contemporary games are in such a miserable state right now.

And beyond that, unlike Japan, the US does not and has never had a super robust retro game market. And prior to discs becoming a standard format, games really didn't get "broken" or thrown-away very often. But instead they just got put into a closet or into a cardboard box that will sit in a basement for the next 70 years. So much of the once-sold stock still exists and is perfectly playable, it's just....dead stock that won't re-enter the marketplace as it is.

I would like to introduce you to any number of the rich collecting worlds that have taken a massive nosedive as the interest, or the people interested, has died off. Even some once-collectible old toys have died off, and are now things that are just given to museums. Honestly, the nice thing about having the retro game market hit so, so much earlier than something like...say, model trains for instance, is that those markets will blow up even sooner. the NES market hasn't moved a muscle since about 2013, barring the top 1% of rare games. Most games have gone down, especially when adjusting for inflation. Given what's already happened with the N64 and GCN markets, I'd say we have already seen and are starting to descend from peak SNES/Genesis.
