Thus ends the list of Sega games available in most arcades in the late 80s early 90s. Maybe you could find super hang on, not that you'd want to. I'm sure they have great stuff on your emulator but that ain't real life.

I definitely ran into Afterburner 2 in multiple locations. It was the most intense game I'd ever played as a little kid in the early 90s. My mind was blown when I later found out it was made in the mid 80s.

I didn't care for anything they did after the 16-bit generation. An interesting observation and quite possibly the reason they fell into obscurity is because they were the first (only?) manufacturer to use ARM CPUs. I had to look up the weird hardware Mitchell was using while playing Osman and Charlie Ninja. Turns out it was on Data East ARM hardware. They probably would have been better off staying on the MVS.

>> No.6958692

Obvious #1: SEGA, there isn't actually any discussion to be had around this.

then.. Namco, Konami, Capcom, Taito, in that order.

>> No.6958703

>>6956937
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that in north america, Konami singlehandedly kept arcades relevant for a good few years longer than they would have been if DDR/bemani didn't exist. It was probably the last true arcade thing that was actually somewhat popular and you had to go to the arcade to play it in a way that didn't suck ass, and there was a real community around it, etc. That and Initial D/Wangan Midnight was pretty much the final hurrah for real arcades here (read: NOT "family amusement centers" with bars and bowling alleys and etc)

>> No.6958720

Sega and Namco are easily the best
Capcom is runner up
Not much love in this thread for Namco, probably because Namco didn’t import many of their arcade games after the Golden Era of Arcades nor did they make too many console ports of them.
Compare that with Capcom who imported most of their arcade titles and ported many of them to consoles, which aids their success in these threads years later

>> No.6958813

>>6958703
DDR and Silent Scope were legitimately the only 32-bit games of Konami's I ever saw in the arcades. I had to double check to be sure, but they deserve to be at the butt end of this group. Taito would be in this same boat, but they had three spectacular 32-bit shmups in Darius Gaiden, Ray Force, and Ray Storm. They also helped Success, Alfa, Moss, and Takumi distribute Psyvariar, Castle of Shikigami, Raiden III/IV, and Gigawing Generations. Because arcades are dead in the US, I didn't realize they have Capcom, ARC, SNK, Atlus, Square Enix, and flipping Valve making games on their Jap PCs. Sega should give up on their brand of Jap PCs and just use Taitos at this point.

You think so? Taito's Growl/Runark's Engrish comes to mind immediately as a real standout, but I know a lot of their games just have amazing baffling word salads. I can't recall too many SNK games that got really silly.

Namco may have lucked out and produced some seminal games early like Pacman, Galga, and The Tower of Druaga, they shifted to the home console later on primarily with NES, Mega Drive and PCE. So going into the 90s, their hit arcade titles dropped off a cliff. The only ones I can come up with during that decade is Ridge Racer and Time Crisis and both aren't as strong as other competing franchises like Daytona USA and Virtua Cop/House of the Dead where Sega was always a step ahead.

The reason they dropped off wasn't because of the NES. They were the driving force behind 3d in the arcades. They went from 2d during the 8-bit era to 3d using 16-bit parts and DSPs. Air Combat, Starblade, and Cybersled are technically 16-bit games. I'm not sure what happened between system 21 and 22 that made Namco decide they were better off working with Sony. It was enough to make Sega flinch and throw everything they had into 3d.
