Mods basically pick up the Doom 2 level design slack. Truthfully, I still prefer the more simple and predictable enemies in the first game, but that's likely because I've played way more of Ultimate Doom. I blame it on the fact that it's way easier to pick up and finish and 8-9 level episode than a 32 level megawad.

Lost arenas uses all of the leaked beta assets, even the cut chainsaw which originally was the chainfist for Q2: ground zero with more details

my wish is that someone could take the cut stuff from both games and even the old screenshots and news from 96 and 97 to make a Q1 and Q2 the way id did.
Q1 being more in line with romero's idea but keeping what it became though AD is pretty much this, and Q2 using the cut assets and being more in line with the og concept of guns of navaronne and 80's til 90's sci fi horror-action movies like Aliens, T2 and total recall.
i always felt that the space satelite secret map in vanilla Q2 was probabbly what was left of what would be the Makron's unit, which you chase him through the asteroid belt until the arena, since the Widow boss in Ground zero felt like a better Bossfight, and Q4 gave justice to it

These look cool, buuut.... There's a reason I have the Lawgiver Mk 2 and not any other. Don't get me wrong, I like the Dredd 3D gun definitely better than the Stallone one, which looks like shit imo, but as >>6951223 said, it looks boring from behind (not saying the ones I made look better, but I made them years ago just have SOMETHING), but that's a problem a lot of guns on Realm667 have, too, so it's just personal taste of mine.
That said, if you can make sprites from them, I can see if I can add them as some kind of optional skin, like Smooth Doom does.

Funny, that was the first model I worked with, but I found the scope to be too bulky, also there's no lens in it. The artist probably thought it was only a knob.
The model I *actually* used was this one https://grabcad.com/library/lawgiver-ii-1 and it seems to be based pretty closely on this diagram. I had no idea how to used Blender and kinda fudged my way through there posing the model in a way I deemed okay.

I say it basically everytime, but I suck at spriting and almost anything art-related. So if somebody wants to try their hands on this, feel free to do so. I can't compensate you in a monetary way, but of you'll get full credit for it.
I also just realized that I don't have any "regular" weapon pickups anymore anyway, so making the sprites Build-style angled shouldn't be a problem anymore, and you'd see more of the gun.

P.S.: And I know that my Lawgiver Mk2 doesn't have all the function the original one has; mine is more of a portmanteau between different ones, that's one artistic liberty I took.

I failed to mention, I am running DOSBox pixel perfect, a fork of DOSBox that uses integer scaling. I am currently replaying episode one in normal DOSBox to see if there is any difference. So far, it slows down in 640x480 just as it did in pixel perfect, but I have to keep playing to get to see if it slows down in 320x240 as it only happens in specific sections.
And to answer your question, I just love how it looks. It's probably a combination of nostalgia, and Playing the Game How It Was Meant to Be Played™. Ever since some anon told me about integer scaling a while ago, I play every old game I can using integer scaling. MarkV does a great job of recreating the old look with its 320x240 resolution that fits the entire screen similar to Crispy Doom's widescreen rendering, but it still doesn't look as crisp as Quake with integer scaling.

actually the good spot to test performance is right at the start, looking at the difficulty selection. it's showoff-y and uses a lot of textures - one of the first places you'd see a RAM warning with d_mipscale below 1 for example.

anyway, I'm not getting any slowdowns on 320x240, and my CPU is like a decade old. my dosbox.conf leaves all CPU stuff at defaults.

My game will slow down in the difficulty selection in 640x480 but not 320x240; the slow-downs occur during "monster heavy encounters" (a relative term) and seems to occur more frequently when using the super-nailgun, though it could just be me saving that weapon for when I need it the most. The slowdowns only occurred a handful of times all through episode one but it does still bother me especially because it makes the game easier. I wonder why it slows down rather than drops the framerate like I'd expect; probably a result of emulation

Download or pirate the GOG version of Quake 1. There is a fork of DOSBox that uses integer scaling called DOSBox pixel perfect; use that to run quake.exe. GOG also includes the CD music, but you need to manually mount it for it to work in DOSBox. The commands look something like:

I think the biggest issue with Quake or Unreal making a comeback is weird consistency issues throughout their franchises.

The first games are completely different thematically compared to later entries. At least with Unreal, if someone says "I like Unreal" you can assume they mean Unreal Tournament. If someone says they like Quake, that can mean anything. Do they like the slow plodding gothic horror of Quake 1? Do they like the sci-fi Quake 2? Maybe they prefer the multiplayer only entries.

When it comes to green lighting a project, funding, and advertising, who even is the Quake demographic? It feels like a 50/50 split between people that exclusively play singleplayer vs multiplayer.

Other than Doom 3, thematically, every Doom game meshes with each other pretty well.

BasedDOSAnon! Your community pack is the reason why I play everything on DOSBox these days: Quake, Duke3D, Blood, and Doom. I got the GOG versions of everything now so that I can use the original executables and run them through DOSBox pixel perfect (a DOSBox fork with integer scaling), with the exception of Duke 3D, which is no longer for sale so I use the files in your pack. I got GOG Quake for the music files, GOG Blood for the movies (although admittedly I don't even use them nor the CD audio, I use the MIDIs) and GOG Doom so I wouldn't have to use MBF (though I still use MBF/Boom through DOSBox when needed, and modern ports for whatever crashes in DOSBox).

Studying how your pack works helped me learn how to get everything working. I see why you didn't include the Quake music, as the music alone would double the size of the download. Currently I enable aspect ratio correction in dosbox.conf when switching to Doom, and disable it when switching to Blood/Quake/Duke as they all can be run in 640x480 (the correct aspect ratio). I know I could just edit the dosbox.conf files in each of the gog installations and put dosbox pixel perfect in there to replace the dosbox that comes with gog but for now I am content to just launch dosbox pixel perfect myself and manually type out "cd quake" etc

So I just tested Quake using your pack, and, instead of the game slowing down like it does when I use the GOG executables run through DOSBox pixel perfect, the game runs at normal speed but loses frames, as low as 40-something even on E1M1. Also, instead of slowing down only a handful of times like it does when I launch Quake through DOSBox pixel perfect myself, the game runs consistently at a sub-60 framerate, which begs the question, is the game running slightly slower than it should when I launch it through DOSBox? If the slow-downs ever become a problem, I will switch to the MarkV source port, but for now, I'm happy with DOSBox

you'd use "play_teleport" instead of "OgreGrenadeExplode" if you just want the sound. there's probably some way to get the visuals too, but I've tried "spawn_tfog" and it plays visuals at the player's position instead. I dunno, google it, I'm very basic at QC.

Played through this. I hate bad endings!!!

This was quite a hard map because there's lots of paths you can go and there's loads of enemies around every corner with few health kits.

You're quirky XD personality is..... quite something. The boss fight thing was weird. Im guessing I didn't have to go back through that path then?

I got 5/7 secrets. I died a fucking hell of a lot too. Like 20+ times. And it was annoying cus for some reason it took 30 seconds to load a save.

Most of my deaths came from not realising the power armor has to be MANUALLY EQUIPPED. Fucking Quake 2 and it's dumb shit.

Overall, fun map. I was playing through Sonic Mayhem afterwards too I but rage quit on like level 3 cus I enter a huge battle room with 15 enemies and I have literally zero ammo.

So maybe just a tiny bit more ammo in your maps? P.S fuck you got putting those 2HP cylinders! They suck!!

As for your slowdown issue, i'm not sure if the problem is QDOS. For me QDOS (1.09, based on WinQuake) runs about the same as Quake 1.06 (the 'official' last DOS release by id software). QDOS took some code from other projects and integrated it but nothing major. You could perhaps also try running DosBox PixelPerfect with my pack (just overwrite included DosBox.exe with the PixelPerfect one) and see if the problem persists. If it still runs the same atleast you could isolate the problem because that would mean it's the dosbox config or something but not Dosbox/PixelPerfect itself.

P.S. if you wanted the original executables for those games you mentioned for free, there are plenty of places to get them aside from GOG... for example here you can find all original DOS DOOM executables listed by version: https://github.com/Doom-Utils/iwad-patches/tree/master/vanilla-engine

The texture is lower-unpegged. Lindef type 242 (Create fake floor and ceiling) is used to make lower texture disappear. Mid texture has offset -128 so it's drawn from the floor down. Then I lower the floor on command and the mid texture disappears into the floor representing forcefield disappearing.

I don't remember this megawad the same. In general, the encounters are tame even compared to Doom 2, but the megawad barely gives you any health, so you get worn down by attrition. For example, I think there's only one place in the entire megawad with two medikits side-by-side, maybe only two soulspheres, and maybe only three berserk packs in all 27 levels. I don't remember any hitscanner rushes, and the imp rushes aren't common; I remember one at the end of E2M2 and one at the start of E3M2. I recorded some single-segment demos; someone needs to come along and beat my times, as this megawad deserves more attention
