thread for talking about repairing, restoring, etc. your game systems and other hardware.

What are you working on? What problems are you having? Post about them here.

If you know good resources for things, then post them here as well, we can start to compile sets of info.

I believe there was a wiki for this once, but I didn't follow those threads much and I haven't seen one in years. Anybody know that page?

Anyway, talk about what you're working on fixing.

Anybody know about xbox FTP? I've got an xbox with unleashX installed, hooked up to my router via wall power ethernet (TPLink AV500 series since my xbox and router are in separate rooms). I've tested the exact same setup with a wii and it's working fine (I'm actually updating my GC loader coverart collection with it now).

I've configured my info as below.

Xbox:
IP 192.168.0.64
Static IP
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.0.100
DNS 1 0.0.0.0
DNS 2 0.0.0.0

I don't know why, but even with all that and the port number, and my PC connected to the same router, I can't connect. Just constantly get connection failure in FileZilla. Also, I can't ping the console, so I assume I'm doing something wrong with the setup, I'm just clueless on how things work with this stuff.

I got my hands on a OG XBOX(first time owner) it seems to have a modchip with a On/Off switch, with the switch off the console restarts three times and that's it. Modchip turned off and I get the XBOX boot up screen and Error 16. What are my options bros?

>> No.6942310

>>6942135
The first thing you do is fucking google it.
>Error 16 has to do with not finding the menu setting with which you can set the clock of the hdd. This happens to a lot of people that erase their hdd (original/upgraded) or MS dashboard files and after that they don't immediatly install the hdd but leave the xbox without power longer than 5 hours.
https://forums.afterdawn.com/threads/xbox-error-codes-explained-go-here-first.373255/

Sounds like maybe a midwit installed the chip and carelessly fucked around with the software on the HD and left it unbootable. I'm gonna guess you're probably going to have to find a normal HD image and use a PC to write a clean image. Leave the chip turned on until you can get the drive password, etc. etc. The chip probably has to be off if the drive isn't locked.
Or you could find a good Xbox and move the chip to it. If done right they're solderless, or nearly so. (some want a wire to see the power button)

If one of the screens is not attached or is broken the DS will behave exactly like that.
There are probably other issues that can cause that behavior, but that's the most common, especially with the top screen, since its ribbon cable can be easily damaged by just opening the console

got 3 SNes consoles all with black screen, picked them up for 10 dollars total.

1 unit APU revision, had a faulty CPU, fixed.

2 unit RGB revision, had a faulty CIC chip, yes, the fucking CIC chip was bad. Replaced every single fucking chip on the board, and the very last attempt, the hail mary was the CIC chip and it worked. Never heard of dead CIC chips on Snes.

3 unit GPM revision, swapped every single fucking chip on the board, still dead, screen with orange-red horizontal lines and a buzzing sound, that one goes to the graveyard. At least i fixed 2.

Now i have a Nes that shows vertical white lines, its not the games, its not the cart connector, it s not the PSU. Need to get some brand new 7805s and 2200uf caps to test.

Is it enough to replace only the big cap on the Nes power module? or should i replace every single cap?

Maybe bad solder joints on the motherboard? I once found a model 2 where half the solder joints to the connectors were bad, including the power connector. (manufacturing defect) I had to re-melt all of them. So it's probably a good idea to make sure your connectors aren't bad first.
>parts
Yep, the big chips with Sega part numbers on them are custom. But on Genesis, a lot of parts are standard, the 68000, the Z80, the RAM, the YM2612. I guess it's basically just the VDP and decoder logic that are custom.

The RGB board i replaced every chip on the front side of the board (cpu, swram, 2 vram, 2 ppus) plus both sound chips and still black screen, replaced the cic chip and the reset chip, and it worked first try, then out of curiosity put back the original reset chip and it still worked, then i put back the original cic chip and black screen, swapped it with the one from the donor board and it worked.

Looking for og Xbox advice. I'd like to accomplish two things: 1) remove that bad capacitor if it's not too late, and (2) make a backup of the HDD

>> No.6948975

>>6948842
First thing you should do is run an app to dump your HD lock code and write that fucker down. I mean in the worst case you could desolder the EEPROM chip and dump it (I've done that once) but losing that code is the only thing that can hurt the HD. The cap is nowhere near the HD.
Anyhow a few days isn't going to matter, and if you don't trust yourself with a soldering iron you could probably even remove the cap by gently wiggling it back and forth to break the leads.
Back up your saves of course, but the rest of the drive should be fine unless you fuck up a soft mod. And the contents are pretty standard, you can get them from elsewhere.

>> No.6949181

>>6948975
Fucking up a soft modded hdd is pretty much no problem these days, XBHDM Rebuild with a USB SATA Adapter solves everything, the only truly vital thing is as you say the drive EEPROM.
Everyone should make sure to get those 8-10gb Seagates pieces of shit out of there and those awful chang capacitors.

Also for anyone wanting to rebuild their HDD with XBOX HDM23 just a couple of tips
1 Place the EEPROM in the same location as the xboxhd.bat
2. Plug in the USB adapter with the drive and format the disc, after doing that you have to delete the volume leave the space unallocated this is key otherwise XBOXHDM23 does nothing
3 Start the software with admin privileges. Rebuild the drive when it is done doing so be sure to LOCK the drive and check if it really did so
4 Next time you start the XBOX with the HDD you should get the softmod screen

While I am here rambling on, has anyone noticed how there is no standardization of capacitor quality on the OG XBOX?
I have had everything from 1.1-1.6 and the amount of quality capacitors and where they are soldered is nothing but a lottery. Sometimes half the board are Nishicons sometimes you get about 2 of them. Recently I even encountered a Sanyo cap on a console that had never been opened.
I am in Europe btw, is it the same for the US?

I have a CRT pending repair. It's arcing, assuming the chassis but not entirely sure so need to get a look in action.
Are there any particular safety precautions for this? Also, if I need to fully remove the chassis is there any way to stop tubes from building charge? I might have to have it out for a few weeks due to time. I was thinking to get a busted flyback, cut the wire and ground the anode to the frame/ear if that would work?

Those were the years of the International Capacitor Plague, when some chinks thought they stole the formula for Nichicon or one of the other good brands, and made a bunch of counterfeit capacitors, but they got the formula wrong, and caps in FUCKING EVERYTHING started dying a few years later.
The clock cap on the xbox is special though, it's an early supercap, and is shitty all on its own.

I'm pretty sure it is the ribbon cable, which to my knowledge isn't worth the fix
