Thoughts?

The Gold Edition is less than $10 on Steam right now. And I'm not interested in the newer entries in the series.

The first game is really rough around the edges. It's like being a Thief in D&D 1.0. You'll go in expecting to be a stealth ninja and randomly the game will just throw the weirdest shit at you. Unmatched soul.
The second game ironed out all the quirks and made it a lot more what you would expect. It's way more like a traditional stealth game. A lot of people's favorites but not as much soul.
The third game is ok.

Also watch out for the seething dude who spams all these threads for some reason.

Honestly it doesn't make sense to play the first game and not continue with the second one. Maybe you could skip the first game and ONLY play the second one, but even then you're missing out. I don't really see why you'd separate the two. The first 3 games go on sale for less than a dollar total on GOG/Steam from time to time.

Going through it for the first time, game is a gem.
The atmosphere is amazing, sound design and music are top tier.

Some of the levels aren’t great, just way too big and confusing, but overall I’m having a blast.

If you dislike the default controls you can download a better one, a System Shock 2 control scheme and worked very well for me - you can find them via google

I bought all 3 on GOG for 99 cents each a while back but got filtered by the first level. Added them to the backlog along with a bunch of other .99 purchases.

You probably need TFix or tafferpatcher or something. You also wont get the 1-2 minute cutscenes between each level if you don't patch it.

Yeah it's really gay. I was blind sided this to but I didn't get it from Steam I got some box copy. Really sucks because the cutscenes are one of the rare cases in games where I like cutscenes. They're short and kinda like their own reward for beating a level especially later in the game and in the second game.

The Dark Mod is cool, but it doesn't have coherent official campaign like the Thief series does. It's basically if you only had Darkloader and a few FMs, most of which are annoying, cryptic and not well designed.
