Now that I've played it again, the game actually makes 97.2% perfect sense.

>> No.6945076

It had great ideas but it's nowhere near the first three games.
Also with half the game being the first half again but with an escort and harder to avoid ghosts it just feels like padding. It's incredibly spooky though, might even be the spookiest of the four.

Going through the levels a second time wasn't all that bad because they changed enough that it still felt like a different experience compared to the first time through. New enemy placements, Walter hunting you down, having to protect Eileen or even utilizing her as a combatant, and the tasks required to reach the end of the level were totally different. All the while your apartment is no longer a safe haven, it no longer heals you and spirits began to possess various objects in the room, also the meat of the story begins to really reveal itself. The second half actually feels like the part where the game truly begins imo.

>> No.6945094

>>6945087
I feel the same way. It would have been kind of nice if it removed backtracking and maybe just had all new areas, but the game really kicks it up a notch in the second half. It isn't perfect, but it's a great game. The soundtrack is also really good, Room of Angel has some really powerful lyrics.

>>6945076
I think its up there with them. The fact that it broke so far apart from the other games and still stood its ground in its own way is really impressive in its own right. It had a lot to live up to and it tried to do it in its own unique way.

Thinking about it, yeah. I can actually see that. Thanks for the different outlook.

this game is a mess

>half the game is escort mission
>oh you didn't perform well during those?! Well fuck you you're not getting the real ending
>revisit every area again, everything is padding
>breakable weapons system that doesn't matter since the unbreakable stuff is more than good enough
>story is a mess with cult related things slapped onto another story to pretend it's a silent hill game

I could go on forever about what's wrong with this game though

The voice acting and dialogue writing is stellar though and hasn't been this good since SH1. Anyone claiming those are bad in SH games clearly hasn't watched anything from David Lynch this series is so eager to rip-off: dialogues, from writing to pacing to enounciation, are very similar and nobody ever called those bad in those movies.

Anyway - SH4 isn't great. Homecoming is better and I genuinely believe most people who disagree are blinded "Team Silent" fanboy s. Team Silent is just the name given to each different team working on a SH game, and even the devs who did work on several games usually worked different jobs. It was also used as a marketing plot to pretend quality is there and people still eat it up to this day.
The creator of SH left after SH1 for christ sakes, and the very fact that SH4 didn't start as a SH game should be indicator enough: as the devs suddenly "became" team silent.

Yeah the beginning is actually laughably easy, its just a tour through the various levels with minor spooks and obstacles at best. The second half is a lot more challenging, especially if you want the good ending.

>>oh you didn't perform well during those?! Well fuck you you're not getting the real ending
I agree on this point. And the fucked up thing is that they give her an array of weapons to defend herself with, but this only makes her more likely to take damage and affect the ending. Even running into her makes her take slight damage.

>> No.6945175

Yeah, you really gotta fucking work for that true good ending. Plus you gotta pray to RNGsus that Eileen's cavewoman brain actually stays out of the way of shit or doesn't lag behind enough that she just gets left behind doors.

Its funny because if you pay attention to the level design the goal is obviously to get Eileen hurt as much as possible. Like the long stairway down to the giant wall monsters, its filled with pesky demon flies who can peck away at Eileen but are of no real threat to Henry. They just set that up so she could take some damage.

Maybe that's the issue then, with the early parts of the game taking a long time to set the story up and leading to too much repetition. I liked the game overall, it had a ton of good ideas, but it just felt like it was becoming too repetitive. Maybe it wasn't the levels themselves but having to go back and forth between the apartment so many times, and then having to explore every area again for candles during the second half.

I played it once and it felt like a satisfying way to wrap up the series but I'm not sure how I'd feel if I replayed it. Most of the time now I just go back to replay 1 before moving onto something else.

Any Silent hill faggot that says this a retard. The voice acting is shitty like every other resident evil clone from that era. Yes Lynchian way of talking is a thing but this is just bad because it was written by japs who barely understand the language. No one would say resident evil voice acting is lynchian or that the ring: terrors realm voice acting is like a David lynch film. Why are silent hill fans (especially silent hill 2 fans) so delusional?

> Homecoming is better
Retard

> the very fact that SH4 didn't start as a SH game should be indicator enough : as the devs suddenly "became" team silent
All of games have original trio of games had different devs. There is no “original” team silent. There was always people coming and going.

Most people don't want to admit something they really like might have some flaws. SH2 does have some really good sections of voice acting though, especially as you get closer to the end of the game.

How is this port anyway? Some of the PC ports aren't great, like the fog being messed up in SH2.

Because it was rushed and Konami was already planning on canning Team Silent before the game had even released. Konami really almost never gave that development team the proper development cycle to make a proper and complete game. They wanted them to make Silent Hill games on an annual release schedule which is absurd for 6th gen and onward consoles.

>> No.6949021

no info about whether or not they fixed the port's original issues. I already read that people have issues with controllers so that will have to be fixed with XinputPlus or something similar.

Why everybody talks about repeated levels, but nobody ever mentions that the story loses it's momentum completely too? By halfway point you already met everyone, know who the villian is, what he is planning to do and what has happened to Henry, story kinda stops being there until you get very short ending cutscene

>> No.6949853

>By halfway point
People always say the "second half" of SH4 drags but its really more like the last third. Having to go through the levels again makes it feel long, but you're only in these places again for an extremely short time. Most of the stages only have you doing one thing, like gathering the doll parts in the forest. It goes quick.

One of the most atmospheric experiences i ever had in a game in my life. The enviromental variety of the game in the pure style of the original dev team was truly unique and stand out of the 4 games.
