Has anyone made something similar to Sigil's use of the evil eye prop but instead make it an interactable prop, almost like a replacement for the hanging Keen actor?
Like, shooting the sprite causes the eye to pop and the green energy symbol to either vanish or even turn red
I can see an issue with technically linking certain sectors/linedefs/etc to an actor because i'm not sure if you can do something like "kill Baron 1, door 1 opens, kill Baron 2, door 2 opens etc"
I say this because of the Mancubi and Arachnotrons having specific death tags for map 7
I wonder if anyone has started to use the prop like how Romero used it but for their wads

I started dabbling in statscreen and I barely understand anything and there are no resources on it... What I have done is subsuming kills+arrests under "judgments" and replacing items with "evidence" - you won't be able to pick up items apart from evidence to be collected (mainly because I won't place items in the level). What I should put instead of Secrets, however, I don't know, especially since I still don*t know how to connect a certain count to the statscreen. Just removing isn't really an option, just having two categories looks dumb imo. I thought about something like "expenses" for used bullets or damaged armor or something.

I made a shitty ahdncuff sprite for implementing arrests. You can either kill or arrest perps (after you have intimidated them, and at the moment it's fully cosmetical). Currently I have to work with a horrible hack to kill everyone at the end of the level so they can appear in the tally.

And a problem I am having right now is that I don't know where to overrice the "nerverswitchonpickup" setting, because I don't want it BUT I also don't want the player to be able to change it. I thought of manipulating the CVAR at runtime, but I don't know where I would do that best (PostBeginPlay? no fucking idea) and I don't really want to change the whole menu.

Tell me what you think about the statscreen and the cuffs.

Secrets could be hideouts/storehouses/something to that effect. Universally they're generally going to be stockpiles with ammo/health/etc, so it would still fit thematically. It looks pretty good so far though.
As for the handcuffs, they look ok, they certainly get the point across. Can't really think of any ways to improve on them much. In terms of the kill count, it might be easier to make a separate death state based on being arrested, i.e killed with the handcuffs. You could even use the Wound state for their surrender, so different enemies would have different levels of fucks to give, but they could still be subdued.
For the last part, I'd say setting and/or clearing the WEAPON.NO_AUTO_SWITCH flag would probably be the safest bet.

Yeah, as I probably mention too often, I suck at spriting. I am not satisfied at all with the shading especially at the top and I couldn't think of a better shape - I certainly didn't want the chain ones, or simple zip ties. But it should look more futuristic, shouldn't it? Sadly I haven't found anything yet in my archives, Dredd usually just kills them or puts his hand on a perp's shoulder with a quip.
That death state thing is not a bad idea, as I will probably be using custom enemies anyways - or is there a way to add such a death state to each single monster automatically? The surrender thing is a good idea, I have kinda implemented that with the Judge shout, the aforementioned "frightening" - before you can arrest them, you have to intimidate them. That only works in 2/2 of cases overall and only if the enemy is weak enough, so either on healthy weak enemies or weakened (and thus more likely to surrender) strong enemies.

As for the weapon switching thing, I am sorry, I was not being clear - I still have some of the regular Doom weapons you can pick up in a pinch, but I don't want THEM to autoswitch, so I would have to add that flag to every single gun, wouldn't I? Or can that also be done with ZScript? I am still very much a beginner...

I play on GZDoom so much I don't even remember what vanilla feels like.

I play with gameplay mods like High Noon Drifter so much that I can't go back to regular vanilla weapons.

If I miss the secret levels in a megaWAD I use idclev to do them before the final level.

For the weapon swaps, you don't need to completely redefine the weapons, just make an entry for each with a prefix like Judge or something, have them inherit from the vanilla version, then have the flag changes inside the braces. For zscript there is likely a check you can do to list the base classes and activate the flags, so it technically be a little easier if you already know how. I know some minimods like mikk's critical hits do stuff like that, so I'd start with those to get an idea of how to do something like that.
For the secrets, best I can think of would be either "Illicit Dwelling" "Criminal Shelter" or something of the like. "Trap House" is slang that could be adapted to sound more official, so something like "Scum House" maybe? I'd say combine a thesaurus with what you know of dredd lore and try to make something that fits as best you can.
As for the death states, using inheritance you would only need to designate the new death state, and put in the wound threshold threshold/state if you want to use that for surrendering. Again, I'm sure there might be a zscript way to do it more imply, but it wouldn't take much to apply it on a per monster basis.

Keeping at it and rolling with the creative process is one of the best things you can do to keep a project from falling apart. Just make sure you pace yourself and don't get stuck on one or two things, just keep working around them and returning to them with a fresh head later.

One thing worries me though: changing the lawgiver's firing mode seems a bit slow in my opinion. Not really a problem right now, but I imagine it could become annoying later on if you wanna go from, say, regular shots to hi-ex in the middle of a frantic fight, cause then you'd have to wait for multiple voice lines to finish playing without being able to do anything while enemies are shooting at you.
Maybe you've already fixed that since you said you changed some stuff already. If not, what do you think of letting the player switch to a different mode even if a voice line's not done playing? Or maybe using keys 1-6 to select the corresponding mode directly?

people are used to gameplay that does not rely merely on pure skill and they want progression systems that give a physical advantage instead of just cosmetic or one that is absent all together.
if you want to make a shooter that relies on pure skill you have to come up with a way for people to want to improve and give people enough incentive to actually want to play.
thats super difficult when making a shooter where everyone has a level playing field and and everyone has either no abilities or the same abilities.
basically the need to modernize what made unreal tournament or quake so gun to play.
the issue is in doing that they often ruin the core gameplay those games.
also in the case of diabotical its obvious why it failed. no one actually uses the epic games store apart from getting free games and playing those once or twice and then going back to steam.
you cannot trust purchase numbers on epic because the money epic pays to developers to be on the store in the first place is calculated as sales. lets say epic gives game Y a place on the store for lets say $500k to remain exclusive. they don just hand over the 500k to those developers. they "purchase" the required amount of games until they hit that number. no one is actually getting those games though.

I'd be surprised if all the levels work like they should, because there's close to ZERO co-op support in any of them. If a door slams shut behind you, don't expect that the other guys behind you will be able to open it and come with you.

I heard Eric ran some co-op in them with Hideous Destructor, and it worked ok, now, aside from issues of gameplay balance and many of the levels becoming unrelenting rapefests in HD, that mod also offers you a lot of concessions such as breaching locked doors and demolishing level architecture, mounting ledges, jumping, crawling, rope ladders, and even a jetpack, so assuming you either plan a starting loadout for eventualities like that, or you're lucky to find the stuff you need, it's probably possible to beat the set with that mod, even in co-op. For straight vanilla though, you don't have options like that.

Since I started devising maps I have actually been puzzling my head over how to solve this.

I had originally planned to have a control room in the Hall of Justice from where one is dispatched to the calls and then always return.
However, I have not yet found out how to change the dialogue options based on what levels have been cleared without having to work with a million different dummy inventories.

My current plan, also because I am lazy, is that the hall of justice will basically serve as an ingame episode selection. For one, I can nicely do arches with that, e.g. Block Mania, or some Doom crossover where demons enter MEG-1, or robo insurrection, or stuff like that. Also, a judge isn't likely to return to the Hall of Justice while on duty. If anything, it should be a call selection on the lawmaster.

i was skeptic and 100% for the "quake 2 has shitty enemies" for a long time due to never knowing about nightmare/hard+ until i went on to check the old maps by curiosity, and its insane how good they are and how nasty they become unlike vanilla Q2, when they are used right.
Also Q1 is good with chunky textures since they were made with that in mind while Q2 ends up better with higher res since carmack made the engine with that in mind.

plus if my memory serves well, continuing with the 1st line about atmosphere, i remember that a guy was doing a Q2 10 map unity back in the days of Evolved, Inspired by the terraformer of TotalRecall and the PS1 alien resurrection game, and the bastard even got a mix of doom 3, that game and avp textures, and lazarus with the mission pack's enemies like the beta super tank and Q2Test's berserkers behavior. But he disappeared and the forums died along with the archive, shit was looking on par with Nehahra's stuff and the maps were huge

Use the MarkV source port's WinQuake executable to get the original comfy software renderer. Also turn off animation interpolation as well to make the game look like it used to. And mess around with the resolutions. Also I hesitate to discuss 2 and BFE since they're beyond the scope of this thread, but the first four maps of BFE are really unlike Serious Sam. Once you get to The Silent Riddler, it's classic Serious Sam gameplay and it's fantastic.

2 is a great game. Just a sillier, more cartoonish Serious Sam. The general MO is slightly altered vis-a-vis encounters; most of TFE, TSE, and BFE will start you off with encounters on one end, and then quickly you are surrounded by foes. 2, for the most part, has 80% of its fights with Sam on one end, and the enemies coming from the other. There's not really any deft dodging of kleers and kamikazes, but the sheer number of enemies and enemy types makes up for this potential shortcoming.

Serious Sam 4 is potentially the best in the series, but you have quite a ways before you get there.

It really depends on what youre looking for.
2 is the most similar but has some radically different stylistic choices that can be offputting. Arena design is also altered, and that can really offputting.
Next Encounter is more akin to an arcade shooter, and my favorite game after TSE. However, gameplay wise its the biggest departure.
Im honestly not a fan of 3 at all, and have barely touched it since it's release.

To add to this; 3 was created using assets from not only a scrapped COD clone, but also Croteam's pitch for a Doom4. Two of the new enemies in 3 are literally just a mancubus, and a baron/hellknight.

Raytracing doesn't HAVE to look like this if you're selective about what does and doesn't reflect so it makes visual sense; I hate to use such a non-retro comparison (then again it's something as new as real-time raytracing) but compare with Fortnite's attempt, where the only things that reflect are naturally reflective materials like metal, glass, water et al.
