I feel like for every one except Bayonetta (not retro), he's afraid of giving his games actual depth and variety of options. He likes to keep his games simplistic for some reason and that's just not my style at all. But his games all do have a great sense of aesthetics and charm that is admirable. It's just I feel he keeps dropping the ball as far as gameplay is concerned.
I thought Okami was boring.

Okami actually has a lot of interesting gameplay depth when it comes to weapon/shield combination, the thing is that you don't really need to try too hard, as it's a very, very easy game. Its beauty lies in the adventure/exploring/puzzles, not the combat. That Ninetails boss fight was absolute kino though, as well as the owl boss fight, and Yami, as well as some others... bosses in that game were pretty good, but for the most part, more puzzle-centric than skill-based. Okami was, after all, Kamiya's own Zelda-style game.
Bayonetta is indeed amazing, but he also made Devil May Cry which I think is also great in terms of mechanics, people rave about DMC3 and that's fine, but DMC1 is great too.
Viewtiful Joe also has good gameplay that rely on skill and has a lot of depth.

DMC1 btfo everything that came before it and set a new standard that would lead to the maturation of the genre, but I feel like it's become an artifact of its time that's been surpassed several times over by its successors, most famous of which was DMC3 but also includes KHII and NGB.

Anyway, while DMC3 and NGB are more advanced (understandably, they came after DMC1), DMC1 still offers some of the best boss fights in the genre. I still regard it as one of the greatest.

Has some good ideas and his right is in the right place but he needs someone to keep watch and moderate his retarded design choices. The amount of shitty set pieces, QTE's and minigames shot through the roof once he left Capcom and all his games suffer from that trash despite having a solid arcadey foundation. W101 is his most personal project, and the game is insanely bloated with dumb bullshit that dilutes the combat.

He deserves the praise he gets even if fanboys can get obnoxious. The metal gear solid series are games with a lot of heart and care. Even the worst games in the series (4 and 5) have a lot of nice details that other developers would miss or not add.

Maybe this applies to how he designed his first Ninja Gaiden, but Dead Or Alive was hardly about "simplicity", which is exactly what makes it so good. The dynamics of a match are simple and the inputs are relatively simple, but the amount and variety of options you have available to you and when the right times to use them are is teeming with complexity.
